    • @Loki-vp4in
      @Loki-vp4in Před měsícem

      @@HumbleIdeas I watched another video. The test button is supposed to trip a GFCI or RCD breaker because it leaks current to the ground when the current on the hot is not equal to the current on the neutral . I have not received my tester yet. My house does not have a GFCI breaker. Therefore, I cannot test it.

    • @HumbleIdeas
      @HumbleIdeas Před měsícem

      @@Loki-vp4in As the design of this device is based on UK sockets, and rfci (RCD) function is NOT embedded in sockets (unlike in USA ) I still think it does not make sense to test RCD function upstream at the DB, when I fact this device is labelled a SOCKET tester. Accidentally press of the RCD test button will black out the WHOLE HOUSE because in British Standards the RCD is centrally located at the DB upstream. That's why in the video I disables the RCD test button by slicing off the rubber. If I want to test the RcD in the DB I will go to the DB and press the test button THERE. 😁

      @@HumbleIdeas Should it not just trip the GFCI/RCD breaker associated with outlet under test instead?

    • @HumbleIdeas
      @HumbleIdeas Před měsícem

      @@Loki-vp4in usually in the UK or Commonwealth countries using the BS electric distribution systems, one RCD will control half dozen or more independent MCB rings. .so if the RCD fails, multiple rings will go down. As mentioned, a socket tester is meant to test the socket and not venture into components outside the socket as it will lead to some confusion as to what is good and what exactly is bad.

      The video is meant to be slow tutorial to let people understand the issues. The method once mastered can be executed quite fast with consistent results. It is important not to Nick earth and neutral.. moisture can enter the joint and cause RCD trip which would be difficult to detect since neutral is hardwired all the way to the DB and not intercepted by MCB. Better safe than sorry.

    I disagree that the RCD test is redundant. If you have a short (or reverse?) between ground and neutral, the socket tester might not detect it, but the RCD button will detect it. (It will not trip therefore something is wrong). It would also trip when you connect anything else, though.

    • @HumbleIdeas
      @HumbleIdeas Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for your comments. Firstly there is no RCD inside the tester. The RcD is a fairly robust spring loaded chunk installed upstream in the DB. It's very important to protect lives, if RCD fails, it means that futurely any earth contact with Live will kill the person touching casing of an appliance. For this reason RCD manufacturers recommend monthly checks on the RCD itself, using a build-in test button in the RCD case. In practice nobody I know bothers with this advice, coz RCD seldom ever fails , it is so reliable!. In the extremely rare event when RCD in the DB can't detect earth neutral fault, then I agree totally that this Tester button will be helpful as it offers a check on that. However this is extremely rare and one is better off testing the RCD function in the DB using the RCD test button directly as recommended by manufacturer of RCD.

      Is your house very very old? Practically all houses have RCD or ELCB. It is important because without RCD you will not be protected from electric shocks in case live wire is in contact with metal part of appliances. RCD ensures that the protection will always be available.
