Love your channel, Greg, but I'm not sure many if any of these titles will make it, even Demon Copperhead by the wonderful Barbara Kingsolver whose Poisonwood Bible could already be on its way to being a modern classic. I think Milkman is the best bet because it tackles thorny issues in an innovative way. I think that a novel that lasts hits a nerve that extends far beyond the immediate. It may be that a novel of substance is a more difficult or challenging read and therefore not immediately highly popular. The book I take most exception to is Hamnet, because while some people love the story (I didn't) the quality of the writing just doesn't cut it for a work of literature and I can't think of any work now in the canon that is so lacking in technique. Likewise I think that because it is exploitative, openly manipulative and lacking in psychological insight, A Little Life may eventually lose the prestige it now holds.

Just what I needed today! Thank you! As delightful as ever. Steamy windows! 😮‍💨🤣💜 I stopped in at my local indie today and picked up the new Attica Locke. It’s the third and last book in the Darren Mathews Highway 59 series. Really looking forward to it. The two previous books were excellent! Starting tonight! I’m also listening to a crime novel at night, a take on Strangers on a Train. So far, so good! I read 9 books in August. Nightwatching by Tracey Sierra was my absolute favorite (even over The History of Sound). I need a good scare. Very highly recommended. My least favorite was definitely The God of the Woods, a book in desperate need of editing. Way too long for what it was. Lots of people loved it, but I kind of knew going in that the length would kill it for me.

It might be helpful to start with a book you already like--there are a lot of productions of classic books, for example. If you like To Kill a Mockingbird, Sissy Spacek does a great reading of that book. I've heard the audio of Charlotte's Web is great, too. The first audiobooks I listened to were mysteries (believe it or not, given how little I read mysteries anymore), and then I transitioned to nonfiction. I had actually started with podcasts, which made it helpful for me to get into the format of listening. Not sure if that's helpful, but that's how I got started.

I am trying to "read my shelves" so I have Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin: The Inland Island, Josephine Johnson, Bel Canto, Ann Patchett, This Is Happiness, Niall Williams and The Country Girls, Edna O’Brien to keep me busy. I'm behind on comments again, so I haven't seen that comment yet--sorry! I remember the title of that book. I think it used to be featured on Borders' BOGO table, but I haven't read it. Thanks for the recommendation!

You had a great month overall besides the book throwing! 😅😂 I DNFed Tomorrow and Tomorrow… I couldn’t get into the gaming part. At 51, I thought I wasn’t in the targeted audience. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m currently rereading The House of the Cerulean Sea in anticipation of Somewhere Beyond the Sea. Such a wonderful book. I’m going to pick up The Lumberjack Under the Tree based on Joel’s suggestion. He hasn’t steered me wrong yet on the M/M romance genre. 😊 Welcome to the book throwing club Joel!

I did wish I had reread House in the Cerulean Sea first. I hope you like Somewhere Beyond the Sea! Lumberjack Under the Tree does sound fun.

It was my first throw, although I should have thrown The Guide by Peter Heller (I hated it). Also, a holiday M/M is The Lights on Knockbride Lane by Roan Parrish. It got 3.5 stars when I only gave 3.
