Cape Cod Topwater Popper Bonito Fishing
Salty Cape TV joins Capt. Ray Jarvis on an exciting day of topwater bonito fishing in Buzzards Bay. This video captures an exciting fishing adventure off the coast of Westport, Massachusetts, where anglers target Bonito using topwater poppers. The action takes place in late July, during a period of intense fish activity, making it a prime time for surface fishing.
Hogy Micro-Chug Popper: bit.ly/4dLHdBE
Introduction
Brief Overview
Captain Ray Jarvis presents a topwater popper fishing tutorial targeting Bonito off the coast of Cape Cod. The fishing takes place in exciting conditions with active feeds, where Bonito are aggressively striking poppers, making for a thrilling fishing experience.
Approach
Positioning Strategy
Captain Ray emphasizes the importance of approaching the feeds cautiously. Instead of rushing in, the strategy is to position the boat downwind of the school, allowing the wind to push the boat gently towards the fish without spooking them.
Gear
Rod and Reel Setup
Captain Ray uses a standard spinning rod suitable for topwater fishing. This setup allows for accurate casting and control in the choppy conditions.
Line Selection
While the video doesn’t specify the line type, a braided line is typically preferred for topwater action due to its strength and sensitivity, which are crucial for detecting strikes.
Lure and Bait Choices
The Hogy Chug Popper is the lure of choice for this session. Designed to create significant commotion on the surface, it attracts Bonito in rough conditions, drawing them to strike aggressively.
Technique
Casting and Retrieving
Captain Ray demonstrates how to effectively use the popper by creating large splashes and noise to attract the fish. The goal is to keep the lure in the strike zone for as long as possible, using slower, deliberate pops to mimic struggling baitfish.
Hook Setting and Playing the Fish
When a fish strikes, it’s essential to set the hook quickly and keep steady pressure on the fish throughout the fight. The video emphasizes the importance of controlling the fish while minimizing damage, especially with the single hook setup.
Environmental Factors
Wind Conditions
The choppy conditions make the use of a popper ideal, as its design allows it to stand out in rough water, making it easier for fish to locate.
Tide and Water Conditions
The fish were feeding on small baitfish like peanut bunker or herring, which influenced the choice of smaller lures that match the hatch.
Weather Considerations
The video highlights how the rough weather kept other boats off the water, allowing Captain Ray to work the schools of fish without interruption.
Situational Factors
Reading the Water
Captain Ray uses visual cues from the feeding fish to locate active schools and adjusts his approach based on their behavior.
Using Electronics
While not heavily emphasized, electronics help track the movement of the schools and adjust positioning accordingly.
Fish Care and Conservation
Handling and Release Tips
The video showcases the use of single hooks to minimize damage to the fish, making it easier to release them in good condition. This approach is both safer for the angler and better for the fish.
Conservation Practices
The use of single hooks and careful handling practices underscore the importance of protecting fish populations while still enjoying the sport.
Key Takeaways
Topwater Action: Using the right gear and techniques in rough conditions can lead to exciting topwater action.
Positioning and Lure Choice: Proper positioning and choosing the right lure, such as the Hogy Mini Popper, are key to success.
Conservation: Using single hooks and handling fish carefully ensures minimal harm and supports sustainable fishing practices.
Insights and Observations
Captain Ray notes that the combination of rough conditions and active feeds made the popper an ideal lure for drawing explosive strikes from Bonito. The visual thrill of seeing the fish hit the lure on the surface adds to the excitement of this fishing experience.

🎣 Factors Contributing to Mortality Reduction: Hook Placement: Striped bass tend to strike the front of the plug, often leading them to get hooked on the front hook, aka the number 1 hook. When using a two-hook configuration, the number 2 hook aka back hook often causes injuries to sensitive areas such as gills and throat, leading to significant blood loss and increased mortality.
