Jeep cherokee XJ with WJ grand Cherokee power steering pump upgrade swap issues??
many people have reported various issues when swapping a 4.7 V8 grand cherokee power steering pump on a Jeep Xj Cherokee TJ wrangler or MJ Comanche. this video tests pump pressures on multiple pumps to explain mixed results people have reported with this swap. the wj pump is for high volume so no drilling should be required unless you are running additional items off the power steering pump. I ran a stock XJ pump and fitting with a 2003-2004 4.7 WJ pressure releaf valve. I the pump valve can be identified because the WJ will have a hydraulic cooling fan. i have not found a source for the valve other than the junkyard or to buy a WJ pump and remove the valve. if someone finds the valve elsewhere please post the link.

You keep saying you'll have links and i see none
correct. I did not post links. the videos are on my channel Yesterday's project
Very helpful video! In transplanting a 96 xj harness into my MJ, so this will get me started for sure
Im doing the exact same thing here but my donor is a 96 xj 4x4 with manual, glad to see someone pulled off a similar project, even with a more difficult swap.
Awesome work man. You saved me some time and frustration! Thank you thank you
Thanks a lot man
We are getting ready to take a trip up there. Where is this trail located?
sorry i don't think i could find it again. i was just hoping trail to trail for hours that day. it was near south range
@@yesterdaysproject6106 yea. We watched the video and track the general area you would be at.. we are going up there next week for trails
This was exactly what I was looking for. I have the exact same damage to my cross member and frame rail. Never done body or frame work on a unibody so this pointed me in the right direction.
Glad it helped
I picked up a 74 just like yours mine's in a little better condition can you give me some advice on getting a carburetor it doesn't have a carb do the ones on eBay for 20 bucks, will they do?
I used a knockoff crab i got off eBay it worked great.
What size ball valve did you use?
i just measured the line that came in the kit and got a valve to match at the hardware store. I think it was 1/2 or 3/8 barb fittings on the valve
This is fantastic! Really like to see the numbers. Thanks very much! Would you have a link to getting the right pressure relief valve?
it is for a 4.7 WJ 2003-2004 it can be identified by the hydraulic cooling fan. I have not found a source to order them new so ive got them from the junkyard
@@yesterdaysproject6106 Thank you. Did you happen to measure the difference in the hole sizes of the XJ vs WJ relief valves? I'm sure you know that a lot of people just drill the XK pressure relief valve a little larger. You mentioned the springs felt different between the two, but I wonder if the hole all is really needed to be done? Or, at least give a little more of a bump but not as good as larger hole and WJ spring?
Great work and I appreciate finding this video. I've been thinking about the WJ upgrade, but I'm glad I've been waiting on the upgrade. Maybe seeing your video was divine intervention. :)
thanks this was a easy swap to put a WJ re-leaf valve in a stock XJ pump and fitting. when i originally ran the WJ pump i had some issues with to much pressure on the return line because i drilled out the XJ fitting plus all the adapters to make it work so this led me down the rabbit hole.
@@yesterdaysproject6106 have some not so good news. I swapped out the XJ valve with the WJ valve, and now I'm loosing power steering at low rpm, at or below 2000. I did some research on troubleshooting and did two things: 1. Pulled the WJ valve back out and blew compressor air through the port to make sure there wasn't any blockage, 2. Flushed & bled the entire system with new fluid. The loss of power steering is still happening at low rpm. I guess at this point, the only thing I can conclude is that the age of my pump is playing a role in this result, i.e. just a weaker pump due to its age. As far as know, this is an original PS pump in my 1998. Other than that I'm about ready to put the XJ valve back. Any additional ideas?
Wow, this is good info!! I'm so goin to try this on my ZJ, as I'm running 37s. Do you think a cooler would help as well?
as you increase pressure so does heat. I would for sure recommend a cooler. a cooler would really help a stock pump as well. many people start to have steering fadewhen off road because they boil the fluid
Nice work Kyle💪🏻
dude, where the fuck is your floor??????????? holy shit!!!
u really should not be using sand buddy
I know others have asked, but a location or any other info would be phenomenal!
sorry. we were driving all over. this trail was near south range in Da U.P.
Those go 70 mph! Good bike!
Thanks! Trying to replace the engine on my 97 jeep cherokee right now!
How did you mount the motor to the chassis I’m trying to do a Sbc on my 86 and don’t know how to mount it up
First i attempted to use stock clam shell mounts but the XJ frame is to narrow. I ended up using NOVAK mounts it was an easy bolt in kit. I used some cheep Block huger headers and everything really fit nice. If i were to do this again i would just go LS. here is a link. www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/engine-mounts/mmxj3
@@yesterdaysproject6106 gotcha I will definitely be getting those
Sweet
I had one. Mine was a 1993. It was a good snowmobile. Now I have a IQ. Shift 550. But I want to Sell it. For $ 6000
thanks for watching, I do what i can to keep the old machines on the trail.
You should have left it towed in at least a quarter inch. That's going to follow every groove in the road it's going to wonder horrible. Id adjust the tow an re edit the video or take it down your going to have someone mess their alignment up. I'm a fan of the videos and think you do good work but don't agree with this one.
Toe in causes them to be darty with slight steering adjustment. I'd agree with him. Especially when he threw out the good enough to get it to an alignment shop part.
Fingers crossed 🤞 but if I ever have to… I’ll be rewatching this one again and again! Thank you 🙏
Three HOURS! I'm thinking it's going to take me three weeks, LOL!
You can do it!
I had to replace the unibody on the driver side after hitting a 1200lbs elk at 59 mph. It's nice to see someone who takes time to rebuild the unibody besides myself. I have already repaired mine at leased 3x and I can't bring myself to sell her. I have replaced everything from rusted floor pans to rebuilding the unibody. Good job.
So far so good! Thanks you for share
Why is your pressure valve not going off? I hook mine up and the safety pressure valve goes off
it should be stamped with the pressure it is set to go off at. possibly yours is faulty or something is caught in it holding it open. i was running around 100PSI
Wow, you have to pull the steering column. That's a change from the earlier cherokee XJ's. That does not sound like fun :/ Thanks for the detailed video!
Could you do a video on the wiring work you had to do for this build?
Thank you for viewing. Could you be more specific what your looking for? Diagram information, or wire routing? This is a jeep Comanche with a complete drive-train from a 1998 Cherokee XJ. Be sure to check the other videos on my channel. I have 4 video uploads that reference wiring required for this swap. I have a walk around where i discuss the build and the Harness swap. I also have a video for the fuel system discussing the gauge and fuel pump wiring. I also have a video discussing connecting the 98 XJ harness to the 88 Mj for tail light operation. I also have a video on the dash swap where i briefly discuss the harnesses.
Its Just a complete stock 1998 XJ harness with a few modifications this discusses merging of harness czcams.com/video/YQngzD7JKeM/video.htmlsi=5UyLWjcH1QkvcdCD
@@yesterdaysproject6106 gotcha thanks for that video somehow I missed that one. Yeah I was primarily interested in the modifications you made to the body harness. Did you have to modify for the interior lights as well? I’ll go back and rewatch your videos. I watched your videos after essentially cooking up the same plan except with my old 96 that I wrecked. I will have to modify the fuel system differently than you did but the principle will be the same.
That was great weekend!!! Thanks Kyle for hanging out with the crew.
Let’s fucking goooo!!
Doing my heater core today. Thank god i got my brother helping me
Nice, so basically a 2 door seat is identical to a 4 door but has that recline mechanism?
Yep
the 88 long bed i have im swapping all the wiring from a 94 cherokee, keeping the 88 aw4 but swapping the 94 engine and flywheel. should i cut and the back brake lights wiring and tie into the 94 plugs?
How much do you want for the bike?
Getting ready to do this as well on my 99
Might be a stupid question, but when you disconnect the ac lines from the hvac box, will it leak out any freon, and then you have to recharge the system?
Correct before i started i went to a local shop and had them evacuate the A/C system. when i was was finished i took it back and had the re-charge the system they charged me about $70.
Nice Comanche it looks cool 98 conversion I just like mine 87 like the way it is but I do like those windows from the doors 👍
Thanks 👍
Bluetooth floor pan 😅
what trail is this
it was up near the Keweenaw Peninsula.
@@yesterdaysproject6106 gotta gps pin? We do alot of trails up there and would love to check this one out!
its near south range. I don't remember how we got there. thanks for watching.
Cool video man, that's a sweet looking trail.
Thanks 👍
It was cool meeting you at High Rock! Hopefully we can hit some trails soon!
what radiator did you use? i've got a carbed 350 in mine now on one tons i'm using a cheap aluminum rad its good up until on the highway but good in the bush Manches are amazing i wish i had one mines a 2000 4 door xj
i ended up pulling this engine. I never got the cooling right, i was using a square radiator from speedway. I could idle around all day or drive under 50mph and it would run nice and cool under180 with using a 180 t-stat. however on the highway for any time it would immediately run 230 and up. I played with some air deflectors underneath and it helped. all i could figure was at speed there was 2 much air pressure in the engine bay. note the additional temp gauge i had on the dash as i tried to figure it out.
@@yesterdaysproject6106 ahhh. See I put a TJ hood Louvre on mine and 3 1/2 washers under the hood hinges I'm running a 570 Holley on a 350
U still got those measurements?
Sweet!!!
great video. I wasn't sure if I wanted to pull all three out as a unit. Thanks for putting this out for us.
Hi , are you parting out the engine for parts ?

What size is the special tool
The plastic one
Is yours as friggin' loud as mine? I bought one on my way home from work today and the sound it makes is insufferable.
A heck of a lot of work ... So, you get an Official 'At-a-Boy' ... One question, seeing as I have an '88 Comanche, and always wanted to install the later grill, like yours... Was it pretty much, an R/R type conversion ? In other words, did all mounting holes, and electrical connections go pretty easy? And can I keep my fenders and hood ? Or are newer ones required for the updated look ? Ideally for me, would be the front grill area with the header, plus the lower bumper and air deflector ...
the body line on the fenders between 88 and 98 are different. hood is the same. if you put a 98 front on a 88 the electrical connectors are different. thanks for watching
@@yesterdaysproject6106 OK, got it, thanks... Looks like in addition to the very front end, I would need 'newer' fenders as well, so the body lines match... And the swapped out connectors are not hard for me to do ... Thanks 🤠 Yee-haw !
how did you organize all of the parts so you dont lose or forget anything once its out ?
the bag and tag method works well. put the fasteners in a bag and tape it to the part they belong to.also take pictures as you go. its not a quick job, best of luck to you.
