Despite the Corona Virus, the Classic Austria classic car show went ahead on the 11-13 September in Wels, Austria. We took the P5b saloon along and checked out what was on display. Here are the highlights of the show.

I visit Mr Trimmel in his wonderful workshop where he bench tests my Lucas 11AC alternator he has just rebuilt. He also tests my new solid state 3AW and new old stock 4TR units and treats me to a tour of his spares department packed full of electrical car parts for classic British cars. I plan to visit Mr Trimmel in the Autumn with my starter motor and have a longer chat with him about his 60 y...

In this garage episode, I squeeze behind the ridiculously tight instrument binnacle to check if the displaced ignition light is working. I also discovered why my ignition barrel was loose and would never tighten up fully, and manage to break the heater switch all by myself!

My reluctance to delve into the murky world of classic car electrics led me to call on the services of local old-school electrician, Walter Trimmel. He spent 40 years working for Lucas electrics in Vienna and in this video he kindly visited my garage to find out what is wrong with my Lucas 11ac alternator. Mr Trimmel doesn't speak any English so I've done my best with the subtitles.

In an attempt to eliminate the play in the gear lever, I replace its spherical bush. It's quite a uncomfortable job involving restricted access right underneath the middle of the car, not to mention trying to keep oily hands off the newly installed central console carpet!

I couldn't find any videos about fitting electronic ignition to a Rover P5b, so I thought I'd make one myself to help others if they were thinking of doing the same. It wasn't as straight forward as I'd hoped as my car was fitted with an early Lucas 35D distributor. But in the end I found a workaround which worked. BTW I say 'Accuspark' in the video but it was a 'Powerspark' kit.

Some quick facts & figures about this British classic car. This car now resides in Austria and we take you on an early summer, post-lockdown drive into the countryside. Apologies for those who like just engine noise, but music was necessary to cover the wind noise from the camera. Stay tuned until the end for some V8 noise.

After a 6 month rest, we go through the process of bringing the Rover back to life in the garage.

As the Rover is still in the garage (I'll be starting her up next week), here's a short summer drive from 2018 to be getting along with. No chat, no music just the mighty V8 pulling us along.
