      Agencies placing children did not check up on children after arrival or keep records after placement so data is incomplete on orphans. The National Orphan Train complex and Louisiana Orphan Train Museum are actively collecting stories from decedents and recording lives of orphan train riders. It always impresses me just how hard it is to tell in the present day, how much the Connecticut River Valley suffered from the wrath of this flood. One of the more interesting landmarks is the old railroad bridge that once carried the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad's Turner's Falls Branch across the river- one of the three spans is a great deal older than the other two. A notable wooden covered bridge was swept down the river by the flood, and took out two of the spans on this bridge, and they only replaced the ones that were struck- it's a very interesting lingering reminder of the flood of '36.

      Sadly it seems your question is currently a matter of distribution. Where I live, individuality is celebrated. Naturally I wouldn't have it any other way -- but that bloom is fading at a local level. Two miles down the road in another county, fundamentalists are fighting over (and winning) matters such as what a woman can do with her own body, and if black history can be banned in schools. These are shameful people doing shameful things. Their steady encroachment is the reason my house is currently on the market. The entire disgusting business has my bags packed. I call these people Kudzu -- the vine that ate the South. Unchecked, uninvited weeds with more money than sense. For me, there is no such thing as polite society without the Anne Listers of the world.🎩

    Hi ladies, apologies if I've missed something along the way - but surely the diaries had already been transcribed before the TV series were made? Is this work supplementing work already done, or is it a repeat of transcriptions already made? (Again, please forgive me if I missed an explanation somewhere)

    • @alisonkirchgasser975
      @alisonkirchgasser975 Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching and very good question. We touched on this briefly when we started to talk about the WYAS transcription project but I'm sure it was easy to miss. You are right that most (and perhaps all?) of the diaries have been previously transcribed and decoded but that was for the purposes of research, books and informing television shows and that work is the property of those who did the transcribing so is not publicly available (beyond the excerpts included in books and papers). The WYAS project will provide a transcription of all of the diaries that will be publicly available on the WYAS website for all to be able to read the entirety of the diaries. Hope this helps!
