American here, I studied abroad in Japan when I was a college student, and I can confirm that it's a very safe country. However, one time, there was a rumor that a pickpocket was going around stealing wallets and cash from students around our campus. One afternoon after I left the campus gym, I realized that my wallet was missing. During my workouts, I'd always keep my wallet and other valuables in my bag. But I never locked up my bag since I felt very safe and secure on our campus. Thankfully, my wallet was returned to our student administration office, but all my Japanese yen was stolen (the perpetrator was at least nice enough to leave all my bank cards, US dollars, ID, and everything else, they just took all my yen). That was a very unpleasant experience, and I was surprised that out of all the countries I've been to, Japan is the only place I've had my wallet stolen. On a side note, I should also mention that I studied on Okinawa, so I'm not sure if there's any major differences in crime rates between Okinawa and mainland Japan.
