    Hi Guys! I really enjoy the podcast. I have a question about kids playing travel ball versus a kid who just plays for their high school team. Do kids need to play travel ball and for their high school team to get noticed, or can they just play on their high school team? In my opinion, if you're a good ballplayer, someone will find you. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    I think you guys hit the nail on the head. Winning shouldnt be everything. Fun and development should be the goal especially before puberty. I share this story not for a pat on the back (frankly I wish I didnt have it to share) but so others can see it and get perspective. 2 years ago I lived in VA coached my daughters softball team. The team was 8U and 90% first year players and a couple that were only second year. We broke people up into stations and worked groups of 3 or 4 to work on fundamentals for at least 60% of the practice time. There was one girl who wasnt the fastest or strongest or top player on the team candidate by any means. The first month I genuinely wondered if she could ever throw it more than 15 ft or hit a ball. With a roster of 14 I made a rotation system so everyone had an outfield, infield sit to give everyone opportunity she was left field 3rd sit. Half way through the season she actually started fielding the ball and holding runners at second or tagging people out. One time she didnt have a ride to the game so I picked her up and she rode with my daughter and I. After the game we went to cookout and she dang tried to order everything on the menu, but I got her to do a meal with a shake. Then about the 10th game she got her first hit (although when then next batter hit it to 2nd she ran and grabbed the ball and threw it on her way to second lol) Her last game she threw a player out at 3rd and went 3 for 3 with 2 rbi. Right after the season my job moved me to GA. A couple months later I got a text that she was riding in a car with a seatbelt on a frontage road, and a wheel had fallen off a truck going down the interstate and unfortunately it struck her door directly and she lost her life at way to early of an age. Her dad and brother made it out without a scratch. I called her parents and told them the impact she had on my life just by watching her determination I was heartbroken with them. Before we got off the phone her mom said "Coach Josh, she LOVED being on your team. She talks about that milk shake all the time. Thank you for loving on her and helping make the last few months of her life fun." If I would have focused on my best players and not made her a priority, I dont know if her mom would have said that. If I would have treated them like they were in high school as 7 year olds, I doubt she would have said that. Dont neglect the outliers. Don't coach with "you better catch this ball or you are running laps". Honor God and keep the main thing about the main thing.

    @NorthGeorgiaJosh Před 23 dny

    Great episode guys! I love how you talked about winning and losing. Do you have any advice for me? Last year I coached my sons baseball team and my daughters softball team at the same time (not to mention we bought a house and I had to renovate it so we could move in and probably more important, move out of my parents house lol). It became really hard for me as a coach to focus on every players development and even making time to play catch with my own kids. I also had some parents that would be really demeaning to the kids and say stuff like if you don’t catch this next ball your gonna run three laps. They wanted me to coach them hard but I’m not gonna scream at 7 year olds. We had a team of first year players and played a bunch of other counties that play year round almost. We got slaughtered all year long. Basically my sons team went 0-9 my daughters went 2-13. This year my son didn’t to play at all because “we lost every game and I don’t like it” I told him I understood but that doesn’t mean the same thing will happen again. The whole team got better and we will probably have the age up advantage this year. Still couldn’t convince him to play. Now if we are playing anything video games sports board games, if he goes down equivalent to starting with an 0-1 count in the first inning or he could be up 17-0 and throw 1 ball and the world is falling apart. We have had so many discussions and I just don’t know how to get through to him.

    Jeff, I studied turf management and UGA and got on with the grounds crew in the ‘07 season. One time you sat by me in the dugout for BP and offered me Red Man. Lol I was also at the game where Maddux pitched against Smoltz. Maddux was my favorite of the group as a child. We had set up BP and I showered in the back, put on the uni and stood by the plate talking to one of the security guards. I had just told the security guard about how much I like Maddux growing up when he point toward Padres dugout and out loud said, “There he goes right there.” I looked to the left and Greg was walking our way and heard him. With his bat in hand, he walked right up to us. Greg got right beside us on his way to the cage and said, “It’s going to be a 2 1/2 hour game tonight boys.” I was blown away! The funny thing is Braves (and I think Smoltz too) got the win LOL

    Great chat! 100% agree with Jeff, I don’t think any kid should be specializing (playing year round) in any sport prior to puberty (~14). I think it’s so beneficial to play multiple sports. If your kid has the desire and you have the means and time to do some individual skill clinics or the desire to do skill work at home during the off season that’s cool but not needed. I live in MN and there is a lot of indirect pressure to play and train year round from a very early age but it is not being put on the players from the coaches and associations. It is the perceived pressure that is put on from trying to keep up with the Jones. It is that FOMO when you’re seeing other parents and kids doing those unnecessary extra things. Hockey is a long season already going from September/October to March/April.

    Watching Argentina at MetLife, I saw great individual players with magnificent skills; and a great team with a high level of tactical understanding. Of course they're good athletes, but I didn’t see a lot of Bo Jacksons. The same applies to many smaller but accomplished soccer nations: Belgium, Uruguay, Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, Switzerland, etc. have minuscule player pools compared the U.S., and yet produce excellent players. Anyone knowledgeable in the sport will tell you that a big part of the problem with the development of American players is the near fetish of favoring bigger, faster, stronger kids at a young age. ‘Smash Mouth’ doesn’t work in soccer. And of course there’s entire the mental aspect; I would cite a player like Phil Foden as just one example. He doesn’t have a lot of muscles, but he's got a good 'soccer mind.'

    We have some 330 million people in this country..shouldn’t be that hard to find a solid 11. Soccer of course requires different kinds of athleticism but it is also very cerebral since it is free flowing with only half time for stoppage. Athleticism without brains does not go far in the sport. The problem with American soccer is the pay-to-play system. It is literally textbook corruption. An institution that should be governed by athletic merit (sport) is gatekept by a paywall. Pricier clubs tend to have more meaningful exposure. It creates a conflict of interest. Do I as a coach play the best players or do I try to get everyone equal pay time since everyone’s parents are all paying exorbitant fees. The best in this sport have rarely been physically imposing and have come from nothing (financially). Hot take: The US has increased the influx of immigrants and naturalized citizenry tremendously over the past 30 years or so. Soccer is the most popular sport amongst this American cohort. USSoccer has not tapped into this whatsoever. Typically this American class does not include club sport in its expenditure as it is quite the financial endeavor to get settled in the US. Main financial expenditures will be transportation, education, and housing. With the amount of time immigrant parents typically spend at work, there is not time to participate in club sport if that is something that they were willing to pay for in the first place. Pay to play has literally priced out most of the American working class. You need to tap in to all areas of your society. Take Christian pulisic for example, the Us system is subpar so his family took him to borussia dortmund in Germany where he grew up at one of the best clubs in the world. Anyway I’ve typed too much at this point. If there are any questions feel free to ask

    Rule #1 no coaching from the sideline or fence. A good coach should address this in the first coach/parent meeting. Coaching is different from being a supportive and cheering parent that's 100% fine and ok. It's also ok to cheer on the opposing team when they make a spectacular play. This helps show sportsmanship to the younger players. Let the coaches coach and just be a supportive parent .

      To have an elite at the top level you need to have a large base of pyramid. In France there are 12,000 clubs. And it doesn't cost more than $250 a year for a child to play football all year round. There is a network throughout the territory and even kids of poor parents can play. A 10 year old child who is good, all the scoots in France are aware of him. The parents then began to receive offers from professional clubs for him to join the club training center as soon as he turned 12. In these training centers everything is taken care of by the club. Parents do not have to pay anything. And for the elite of the elite, those who are destined to join the national team, there is the INF Clairefontaine. --- The fact that there are also many amateur and semi-professional clubs allows late bloomers to be spotted by professional football. Ngolo Kanté for example was not spotted during his youth but only in an amateur club when he was already 20 years old.
