Why has my Sweet Iron bit gone rusty?
Quite often we will get a call or email from a customer quite alarmed that the brand new shiny bit they had purchased is starting to go rusty after just a few rides.
They are even more alarmed when we say "Excellent! it's doing what it's supposed to do!"
You see, sweet iron material when exposed to saliva/moisture and oxygen creates a surface layer of oxidisation - rust - which is what gives the sweet tingly feeling in the horse's mouth - encouraging salivation.

    I really like this bit although you have to be careful you cannot have normal rein contact as that will cause your horse to stop. Love it for my young horse as it has made it simple to teach to turn his head and also he stopped shaking it. I have to change bits sinve now I am starting to teach him the 5 gates (icelandic horse) and this bit is not good for other than simple commands. But I love it and am sad to take it out since he is very calm and happy with it...

    My pony goes so nicely in this bit! I have five versions of this one eggbutt! Two smooth, single jointed eggbutts, one of them is thinner than the other. I have a hollow mouth, slow twist and corkscrew eggbutts as well. But my personal favorite is my rainbow eggbutt!

    • @BitBankAustralia
      @BitBankAustralia Před 11 měsíci

      This is my personal horse - I also ride him bitless regularly. If you want to compete at any level in any country essentially you must use a bit. There are some places that allow bitless at low level which is great! We are big advocates for ethical bitless - there are so many bitless options that are far more cruel than a bit as they work directly on the sensitive facial nerves and have the ability to permanently damage them - that sounds pretty tortuous to me, imagine having the horses muzzle mobility permanently impaired? I urge you to pragmatically and critically look at both sides of the argument instead of labelling one or the other good or bad. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and both have their place in riding. No shame or judgement.

    • @juliaserento9928
      @juliaserento9928 Před 11 měsíci

      @@BitBankAustralia Which is why riding should be stopped all together. The sheer amount of physical and mental damage the horses are put through is horrible. While equestrians use, abuse and destroy horses' physical and mental health, we rescuers and rehabilitaters are left to pick up the pieces and nurse the poor animals back to feeling safe and healthy. And while we think of animals as “my personal” instead of treating them as equal separate living beings who should be treated with respect and care and not be made to suffer for someone's gratification, animals will never live in peace. My heart goes out to this horse and all those not yet rescued to be free.

      @@juliaserento9928 I know anyone that has been around a horse person would know that the horses receive better care then their owners. This includes racing. Most horses receive better nutrition, supplementation, physical care such as exercise, physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, red light therapy, acupuncture, regular dental and farriery. Don’t be fooled by one-sided propaganda, their agenda is not horse welfare I assure you. There are always exceptions to the rule but don’t throw us all in the same bucket.

      @@juliaserento9928youre a joke.. so many equestrians rescue horses and spend thousands of dollars on their health without even ever thinking about riding first! riding can be a great way to teach a horse how to carry itself properly and get enough exercise. in germany we say that standing around is the biggest harm to a horse, being left out in the pasture for 5 years was more detrimental to my horse physically than riding casually- why? because horses naturally only use the side of the bidy that is more comfortable, leading to uneven wear. it is our job as owners to make sure such things dont happen. its absolutely not unethical for a horse to work an hour a few times a week for the amount of care the average persons horse gets. no one would finance horses if they wouldnt be emotionally attached to their horse. please educate yourself before spewing hate, the bit is a great way to activate a horses hyoid apparatus leading to stretching of the whole body. look how calm this horse is, does it look abused to you? if anything, my horse was adopted from animal protection and used to trash around when presented with a bridle, now she puts it on herself while i hold it 😉 anecdotal, but i know many a rider that can say the same!

    I wish they would stop making bits with copper and or Iron, because too much copper and Iron exposer is not good for anyone including horses! ....so please don't buy bits that are with copper if you don't want your horse to suffer from copper toxicity.

    • @BitBankAustralia
      @BitBankAustralia Před rokem

      This is incorrect information. The only toxicity your horse can get from copper is the green scum that grows on pure copper - no bit is made from pure copper, it’s too soft. Copper with other metals to create an alloy is perfectly safe for horses, bit companies spend millions on research and development of bit materials. Stainless steel is very cold, hard and sour. Copper alloys are very warm, sweet and softer on the enamel.

    I had no idea they were banning FL snaffles. They're going to wipe out a lot of people if they do until they can get their horses into another bit that suits them. They're so commonly used and have been around for ages. I almost restarted mine in a FL as some horses seem to go quite well in them and it was recommended by a lot of people for this particular horse when I was bit hunting. Glad I went for an eggbutt snaffle instead! Interestingly I have been told by a number of people I shouldn't be using an eggbutt snaffle due to a nutcracker action on the palate and I always wondered how that could happen considering how the bit bends when it's in the mouth.
