This year’s theme focuses on civil-military challenges in modern war. From advances in the space and cyber domains, to the advent of artificial intelligence, to new challenges in information, to domestic unrest and political violence, modern war will almost certainly involve new battlegrounds, faster decision-making, and more domestic instability. We sought papers that identify how new technolo...

Germany is not 'an Anglo-Saxon nation'. The English (in England today) are mostly Danish and Frisian, not much Saxon German (though many are). If you look at the DNA map of Proto-Germanic U106, Germany itself is less Germanic than western Denmark, southern Norway and most of England (that is, the coastal North Sea Germanic-Scandinavians).

When our troops on the beaches, the King called for aday of prayer, the country responded and the changes were amazing, small boat owners said the channel was a calm as a mill pond, never done this before, the sky to stormy for the Luftwaffe, so this was for the nine days it took to clear the beaches, a panzer group was racing to Dunkirk and was suddenly ordered to stop by hitler, no one ever found out why and they had to stay put.

No oil. The end. In 1940, the USA produced close 90% of the world's oil. The Reich had a severe oil shortage. They never broke the British blockade. They had to attack USSR for oil by 1941 to maintain the Nazi Empire. Otherwise, they would not have any oil to mount the massive Operation Barbarossa in 1942. The German relied on 700,000 horses in 1941. As the war progressed, Germany produced more tanks. Quantity wasn't the issue. The issue was having no oil for a true mechanized fighting force and tactical maneuvers.

The most important decisions made on the field of Gettysburg were Reynold's decision to call forward his corps (I, III and XI) and fight at Gettysburg, while advising his commander, Meade of his intentions and that the ground looked good for a defensive battle. The second was Lee's decision to fight it out at Gettysburg. Longstreet wanted to march south and find ground under the impression that Meade would be forced to attack, but Meade had moved his line of communication to Westminster and had Lincoln's permission to maneuver such as to come to DC's rescue, not to stand between Lee and DC. Lee would have wasted time and resources moving south and eventually would have had to pull back to Port Royal and his FSB. Lee believed he had a chance to do extensive damage to the Army of the Potomac based on the first day's fighting, but he misunderstood his enemy. Meade was not Hooker or Burnside or McClellan. He would fight and fight competently. And Gettysburg may have been the apogee of the Army of the Potomac as a fighting force. Never would it march and fight as hard again until the last months of the war.

A couple of points here: The Union strategy was to hold the Confederates in the East while slowly eating away at the center of the CSA by pushing through to Atlanta and beyond, while cutting off the South from outside aid by blockade and the capture of ports. The operational intent in the East under Meade was to simply keep Lee contained. Look at Lincoln's orders to Meade. He was free to maneuver the Army of the Potomac as long as he could beat Lee or arrive at the same time if Lee should take a lunge at DC. Meade knew he could stand off and refuse to attack Lee on chosen ground or in his fortifications, whether it was at Falling Waters or Mine Run. While Meade had his bad moments in the follow-on campaigns of late 1863, he also did well, avoiding Lee's attempt to get around him before the Rappahannock, giving him a bloody nose at Bristoe Station and then after some beautiful attacks across the Rappahannock against exposed portions of Lee's army, maneuvering him down to the Rapidan. Keep in mind that Meade did not have to attack Lee at Gettysburg or Cashtown and he had Lincoln's orders to look for an opportunity, not a Fredericksburg. Further, by moving his lines of communication to Westminster, he put his primary LoC behind his army. Lee could maneuver to Meade's left all he wanted and would never threaten Meade's logistics. Tactically, Meade was poorly served by luck and his subordinate commanders on the first two days. On the 1st day, he looses Reynolds, who might have kept O.O. Howard from spreading his corps all over the countryside north-east of Gettysburg, where a single brigade of Confederate infantry almost rolled him up by itself, defeating the XI Corps in detail. One has to wonder what Slocum was thinking to not march to the sound of the guns or at least take the initiative, knowing what Reynolds, Howard and Hancock were screaming to Meade about. Than there was Sickles and the Wheat Field on the second day. But everything came together of the third day and the competent performance of his cavalry division commanders throughout the campaign.

Hitler lost the war because Steiner was a coward who didn't follow his orders. If Steiner was a true National Socialist, the defenses of Berlin would have held allowing for the recapture of the oil fields needed for the Luftwaffe that was being rebuilt. Further, it would have bought time for the Hitler Youth to gain tactical training and combat experience.

Maybe I'm nuts but the main reason Hitler lost the war was attacking Russia leading to a war on 2 fronts. Just imagine him bolstering the Africa Corp along with the Italians, taking Egypt and pushing through to the Middle East Oil fields. What a dummy Hitler was considering his contempt for history and Napoleons disaster.

The War was not only won by attrition, but when Grant via "Sherman's March to the Sea," took the war to the (Southern People), It was the 19th Century equivalent of dropping the two Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki! Defeat the people, to win the war! You don't defeat an enemy by winning battles upon the battlefield! We lost Vietnam, because we were never prepared to wipe out the countries that were the true antecedent causes of the conflict! Had it not been for "Sherman's March, " the war would have somehow continued! Possibly?

As an experienced camera person I noticed this right away. An expert single-camera shooter in this situation would show the viewer what the speaker was talking about once it became clear the viewer would want to see it for himself... perhaps even keeping the speaker in the frame, but not necessarily if close-ups were needed. There's a chance the camera person expected the maps and drawings would be edited in later to show what he failed to show. Otherwise push in to show the maps, pull back when you had a good look and could understand what was being spoken about. It takes awhile to develop the instinct of what to do when you're running a one-camera setup.

If the USA doesn't take the Philippines from Spain then Germany would have, and the treatment of the Filipinos would have been much worse. Although that would have lead to Japan taking the Philippines from Germany in WW1 and thus no Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. After the Spanish-American War, Cuba and the Philippines should have both been put on the road to independence, with a clear road map. However, neither should have been granted immediate independence, even though both wanted it. They simply weren't prepared for all that it entailed.
