In April 1916, all hell broke loose in Dublin City as the Easter Rising erupted and Ireland’s capital was torn asunder by insurrection. Although the 1916 rebel leaders lost their lives and the military battle, nevertheless they won the propaganda one, with their deeds inspiring others to fight the subsequent 1919-21 Irish war of independence, which eventually culminated in the Irish Free State being established in 1922. However, the 1916 Rising also had other unintended long-term consequences, in particular for Ireland’s national art collection. This is because the Rising initiated a remarkable series of events (involving a hit squad, political assassination, a grieving widow and much more), which eventually led to the lost Caravaggio masterpiece ‘The Taking Of Christ’ coming to public light of day, so that it can nowadays be enjoyed for free by any visitor to the National Gallery of Ireland.
This 50-minute radio documentary uncovers the unlikely series of events (beginning with the 1916 Rising) which led to the lost Caravaggio masterpiece ‘The Taking Of Christ’ finding a home in Dublin’s National Gallery of Ireland; as well as shows how it has to be one of the most extraordinary stories to emerge from the 1916-23 Irish revolutionary period.
