Philip Glass: Metamorphosis I - Brooklyn Orchestra - Olivier Glissant
Philip Glass: Metamorphosis I
Brooklyn Orchestra
Olivier Glissant, conductor and arranger
Both fascinated with Brazilian music, Philip Glass and Olivier Glissant met during sessions for Tico da Costa's record Lagartixa. After founding the Brooklyn Orchestra, Glissant set out to create a symphonic arrangement of Aguas da Amazonia, originally performed by Uakti on their own self-built instruments, seeking to make the work playable by any symphony orchestra. Glissant's intention was to recreate the Brazilian rhythms and feel without requiring specialty percussion or Brazilian musicians, thus expanding performance opportunities for the work.
Of "Águas da Amazônia,", which he will conduct at the MATA Festival on May 18, Olivier says: “Philip Glass created something beautiful out of very little material - an entire movement based on two notes, being expanded, and expanded, and expanded using every trick in the book. It’s just beautiful. I love how romantic this piece is, and how universal it is".

Thank you, Mr Glass ! As a poor guy , I let the rich guys attend your concerts , and every now and then , I'd get a freebie from you - like this little video ! I've been listening to the 7 minute version for many days now on You Tube. To quote our friend Keats - it's "music yearning like a God in pain". But I am not a freeloader, Mr Glass. I have bought many of your CDs over the years, and still listen to them. Thank you for everything. God bless you !
You've done good work. Thank you.
필랩 글래스의 음악은 늘 마음 한 구석을 어루만져준다. 젊었을 때나 지금이나 늘.
Phillip - I am not sure if you will ever see this, but thank you so much for all the work you have done over your lifetime. You music is unique, beautiful, maddening and devastating. It has been with me in some of the deepest moments of my life and has given me hope and humbled me. Thank you and I hope you had a fantastic 87th birthday.
one trick but a good one
EMOTIONS...❤
beautiful
A true Classic Master
Thank You! Dear Mr. Glass! I saw you perform in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1986 ish? Songs from Liquid Days introduced me to your music. I ecstatically loved it!! I had never heard anything like it before...or since...it touched me in a way I can't describe! Bravissimo!!!! You are the absolute best!!! Happy Birthday!!! Thank you, thank you , thank you !!!
From the movie Breathless which I saw as a kid, I remembered one piece that filled me with melancholia, lost love, deep love, longing for "her" even though I never experienced these emotions in reallife for any girl I met since I was simply too young. Two decades later with internet and its possibilities I decided to look for that song. "Opening"...And a couple of years later I actually had a short conversation with its creator, Philip Glass, who I met after a concert. Very humble, kind person willing to talk about things, about the old days and even asking me for my opinion on the accoustics of they venue. I thought they were excellent and so did he. Two years later they did recordings there (we were told since I was there too) but whatever came out of it I don't know. Anyway: opening and also closing which is somewhat different, are still some of my favourite pieces of him.
Absolutely beautiful! I always wondered how it would - or even it could - be played on guitar. Just WOW!
Happy birthday Philip
There are few people that I think of who truly make the world a better place because of the work they do. Philip Glass is one of them. His piano solos can smooth over the roughest of days. Thank you, happy birthday and I hope you have many more.
I was a weird infj working class kid who see the movie wreckless with Richard gere and fell in love with the rain in piano form, cheers Phillip 😇💓🙏
magnifique .. I have all the etudes by Maki Namekawa and the drive is abolutely divine

Is wonderful what you are doing Sergio the continuity of sound you achieve is magic I’m studying classical guitar and know how difficult it is Thank you
It is a pity that an Austrian Bösendorfer grand piano has to forfeit its reputation for this rather jerky recording. The grand piano vibrates wildly and undamped at 1:04 min. The pianist has various problems with the complex rhythm of the piece. I recommend Paul Barton on an Austrian Feurich 218 grand piano (czcams.com/video/FdlNBggsJVY/video.html) or, if necessary, Víkingur Ólafsson, unfortunately only available on a Steinway & sons grand piano (czcams.com/video/sZffgf4GoMQ/video.html).
Maki is the best, i love her
😍😍
Congratulations
From the Old Hands of an Old Man comes Music........
Philip Glass is played best by...Philip Glass. 🙏
Thank you so much. 🙏
He's music was the key to planet, ....that m.daugter 'y.2010 fand.
I listen for 1000 x , it IS liké make love with you
Sometimes I wonder if freedom really exist but this music assure me it does❤️🌼
It is incredible how such simple, repetitive and minimalist music can evoke so many memories, reflections, landscapes... it can only be the work of a talented composer.
I like to lay on my sofa with eyes closed and listen to Phillip play. I also like to play this on my 114 year old baby grand piano myself, although I'm not as gifted as Phillip.
2024🔥🔥🔥🙏👍
I'll admit when people ask me to think of music in my head, I don't think of a snazzy rock beat with a funky bass riff, screaming guitars and athletic vocals, I think of this.
You made me buy a keyboard just to learn how to play this 😂
Hey Maki, you’re amazing. I think you would give my piano teacher a run for her money, but don’t tell her - she is awfully good though. czcams.com/video/65bgR_z_79Y/video.htmlsi=n-WF8XrNbH2YK7Mn
Warmest imaginable greetings to you Mr Glass, you have enriched my life immeasurably, the piano which your music inspired me to buy has opened up another dimension for me, I simply cannot thank you enough, life is so, so, so very good!
❤❤
His piano works are the paramount of contemporary music.....
Divine aw the composer
Happy birthday, Mr Glass ! I love your music ! I have been buying your CD's for years and never tire of listening to them. Thank you, sir, for making music that makes our hearts and minds soar ! The music of the spheres is not in Heaven. It's here on Earth. With you !
This why I bought my first ever piano and decided I just had to learn how to play this wonderful piece-one of the best decisions I have ever made.
This is a nice little piece of early Glass, but 7 minutes of it?! There's not enough going on here to fill 7 minutes.
I can’t help but agree with you. Very repetitive with little, if any, variation, but I guess maybe that’s the point? Good for background, quiet meditation. Music to try to stay calm in a crazy world, I guess.
@@kerymichael1849I met Glass in Florida back in the late 80s. He was very nice, but man, he has no gift for melody. Zero. And he doesn't know when to end a piece. More is not better.
just so very beautiful
I try to understand the why of this song...and tbh, my best answer is "je ne se quoia" + variable tempo Phillip Glass is in fact a master of minimalism, even if you ignore all the pretentious art house critic stuff. This dude very truly understands music, as he sees it.
His music is like an arpeggio riding on a sine wave of tempo. He sounds like the ocean. Or breathing.
Que maravilla, se disfruta mucho
Que bella música !!! Que talento tan grande !!!
So simple yet so beautiful
Thank you.
