Blue Lining a Cutthroat Creek - Trout Fly Fishing - San Juan Mountains - Colorado
Hey everyone! In this video I explore a new creek in search of native Colorado River cutthroat trout. It was a really fun adventure and I even saved one fish from becoming trapped in a drying pool.
The term Blue Lining usually refers to fishing small, often remote, trout streams for native or wild fish. And that is exactly what I was doing here.
Enjoy the video as this creek was loaded with these pretty little trout.

    Hi Hayden - I really enjoy your CZcams Channel, very well edited and well put together and your commentary is not overbearing and on point. I I think you just started the channel within the last year or so, keep up the good work. I also see you post often on FishBrain and I follow you there as well. I especially like what I think you are trying to accomplish, and that is to catch Cutthroat in their native environments. As the Milan Miller quote goes, “Trout don’t live in Ugly places” , I am sure this pursuit you have will lead you to some incredible adventures and places, as your content has shown so far. I am also a Fly Fisherman that lives in Oregon that has a similar task in trying to catch as many species as possible on the Fly, including all of the different types of Cutthroat Subspecies. I am at 21 species so far, including 7 different type of Cutthroat. I am just wondering if you have any plans to come out to the PNW and get your self a Sea-Run Cutthroat, Coastal Cutthroat, a Crescenti Cutthroat, and a Lahanton Cutthroat, even though I think you have Lanhanton’s near you. Anyway, just wanted to see if you needed some help and on these Cutthroat. Let me know and I can try to help where I can.

    Thanks for the video! What does "green lineage"mean?

    • @ChasingCutts
      @ChasingCutts Před 16 dny

      Here is a basic rundown; what we call today the Colorado River cutthroat is the subspecies native to the Upper Colorado, Gunnison, Dolores, San Juan, White, Yampa and upper Green River watersheds. However in the 2010s, it was discovered that we had unintentionally lumped together all Colorado River cutthroat when they are actually three separate "lineages" or subspecies. There have been proposed names for these lineages, but one way to differentiate them is by the "Green Lineage," "Blue Lineage," and "Red Lineage". The Green Lineage CRCT is specifically what is native to the Upper Colorado, Gunnison, and Dolores rivers. The Blue Lineage CRCT (proposed to be named the Green River cutthroat) comes from the White, Yampa and upper Green River watersheds. And the Red Lineage CRCT (officially named the San Juan cutthroat) is from the San Juan watershed. These lineages are just as distinct genetically, if not more so, as Rio Grande cutthroat are from Colorado River cutthroat and Greenback cutthroat. But it will take time for it to become more well known.

      Actually those are two entirely separate cutthroat subspecies! I know it can be confusing, but here is a basic rundown; what we call today the Colorado River cutthroat is the subspecies native to the Upper Colorado, Gunnison, Dolores, San Juan, White, Yampa and upper Green River watersheds (all of which are west of the continental divide). Meanwhile the Greenback cutthroat is native to the South Platte watershed (which is east of the continental divide). However in the 2010s, it was discovered that what we had unintentionally lumped together as the Colorado River cutthroat is actually three separate "lineages". There have been proposed names for these lineages, but one way to differentiate them is by the "Green Lineage," "Blue Lineage," and "Red Lineage" CRCT. The Green Lineage CRCT is specifically what is native to the Upper Colorado, Gunnison, and Dolores rivers. The Blue Lineage CRCT comes from the White, Yampa and upper Green River watersheds. And the Red Lineage CRCT (also called the San Juan cutthroat) is from the San Juan watershed. These lineages are just as distinct genetically, if not more so, as Rio Grande cutthroat is from Colorado River cutthroat and Greenback cutthroat. But it will take time for it to become more well known.
