Once again we couldn’t find videos on our model so we made one for you. The engines for the regular Elantras are very different from the hatchback model that we have. The Elantra Touring was last made in 2012 and there are not many on the road comparatively. We used 12mm and 10mm for wrench sizes and a basic flat head to pry things that needed prying. We spent an afternoon back in May at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knolls. We loved it! Definitely a great place for kids and adults. There is a nice boardwalk outside as well so you can see the marsh and different birds and snakes, I just failed to take any pics or video of that. It’s located between Atlantic Beach, NC and Emerald Isle, NC and makes a nice stop for a day trip. It’s close...

    Thank you! Videos like these are great because they let us see what is involved and what we might run into. For now, I am only replacing the plugs and wires, it is a good idea to do them together as the wires corrode with time, but you may also do that when you change out the coil pack. Have you had the timing belt replaced yet? I figure that is the time to replace the head gasket as long as you don't have any leaks. I don't have the proper tools to that myself so I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay someone to do that.

      Hello, I’m glad this was helpful! We really tried to take note of everything that was a challenge, specifically to save other people the time. We had the timing belt replaced back in 2019 I believe. Our old mechanic back in California did it and if I recall it was approx $300 at the time. Honestly, I don’t think we would attempt that ourselves, even with the tools. Simply because of the annoyance factor. Some jobs are not worth the hassle, that’s for sure!

    Did this clear the code? I'm only concerned about passing smog/emissions inspection.

    • @thischarminglifenc2236
      @thischarminglifenc2236 Před 2 měsíci

      Only for a few days. If you purchase an obd II code reader, you can find out where your car has issues, and you can also delete the code right before you go for a smog check. It will come back on in a day or so. We are suspecting a leak in a hose somewhere is causing our check engine light. All of the repairs have helped tremendously, and our car is running great, but the check engine light is still on. But it always passes inspection. Hope this helps!

      @@thischarminglifenc2236 Damn, this is notoriously difficult code, I do have a reader at home. My fuel pump is the same model but much more rusty than yours. I don't want you to give out more info than you're comfortable with but I wonder where you passed state smog tests with the code active. I'm in PA and as I understand simply clearing codes doesn't cut it.

    Or it would sputter I’d take my foot fully off the gas and re apply acceleration and it would go again

    So did it fix the issue ? Because I’m having the same issue when I’ll be going and I’ll have my foot to the floor and will cut out and then sputter then acceleration will cut back in after 5 seconds

      Hello, If you haven't changed your Vapor Canister Purge valve I would start there (part number 2891026900). The part is $10-15 on ebay etc. vs 150 from hyundai. Just be sure to install it correctly (ie not upside down). I didn't at first and it would stall after refueling, flipped it right side up and it fixed that issue. Check some other videos about that part and see if that helps. I say that because its a super cheap, easy to replace part and is (from my research) often the issue. If you dont already have an obd2 scanner those are super helpful to narrow down the areas of concern. I would change your fuel pump last after checking EVERY other possible thing. Because its dangerous and messy. As stated in this video we are not professionals and suggest going to one if possible. Hope this helps! If it does feel free to comment again so other people can benefit.

      Not everything. But it fixed all the issues that were affecting driving. We still need to check our fuses as well as hoses for leaks but that may be specific to our car. @@joey73122

    I'm not a mechanic. But I also do most of my own work. Firstly I would also use a degreaser on the inside of the valve cover. Secondly when reinstaling the cover. I would finger tight all the bolts. Then snug I. A cross pattern from inside to out. Then torq in the same pattern. We'll done video. Then I have a question. Should some rtv sealant be used over the cam seals (half moons) and by the timing belt? I'm about to do this job and doing some research. Thanks

      Hello! Yes, these are all very valid points, I appreciate the comment. Also, if we made the wrong decisions that's understandable, we are not professionals and are not putting this out as a "how to" but more as a "here's what we found". We chose not to use degreaser based on some info I had found about it causing the self-sealing gaskets to deteriorate quicker. The way you described reinstalling the cover is exactly how it was done- the video may not show it and/or I may have not mentioned it. But that is a really good point to bring out. We also chose to not add sealant based on the fact that the gasket was self-sealing. The area you mention near the cam absolutely had sealant and this was awful to remove because of it. Everything I read in preparing made it seem like this was not necessary to reapply. We had purchased some in case and ended up returning it. Part of that decision came down to the fact that we will keep this car until it dies and if we need to get back in there next time will hopefully be easier. Removing the cover without damaging the engine was truly the worst part. I hope this helps!

    I'm halfway through an Associate degree in Automotive Technology and I have the same make/model/year Hyundai. That plate you couldn't get off is called the "Fuel Pump Plate Cover" You need a special tool to get it on and off and to torque it to spec. It can be called some variation of "Fuel Pump Wrench" (see the link at the bottom). It is only a $20 part, but since this is the only time you would need to use one, I would see if you have a friend that is a gear head and has a universal one. That plate cover needs to be torqued to between 57.9 ~ 72.4lb-ft (78.5 ~ 98.1 N.m), which you can't do without that tool and a torque wrench. There are a lot of parts that you can just make sure they are snug, but this is NOT one of them. If it is not torqued properly, you could have fuel vapor leaking into your cabin. If that happens, all it will take is a spark and a fireball will fill the cabin, harming anyone inside. To emphasize how seriously I take this. I have NEVER commented on any video EVER. Please protect yourself and anyone else that rides in your car and have this fixed. www.amazon.com/Universal-Removal-Adjustable-Repair-Spanner/dp/B08JPF7HHC

      Thank you so much! I did see that there was a tool to purchase but we were already deep into it and made it work. I feel like $20 is well worth the price over death and didn’t realize it needed to be torqued😳 and so much! I will order one. We are still having issues when refueling, it won’t start without us giving it gas. And is jerky until you get going. This is also a manual transmission, not sure if you’ve run into anything like that. We have just replaced the spark plugs/ ignition coil/ valve cover gasket. And the alternator just went so we did that too (I’ll be uploading videos for those too). It’s running great except for when we refuel. The OBD codes are all emissions related and we’ve worked on them. But at this point I’m thinking it could be a leak in a hose somewhere? We haven’t replaced the oxygen sensors yet, but we are at the point of bringing it into a professional to do a thorough diagnostic. If you have any advice it would be appreciated.

      @@thischarminglifenc2236 Also, a community college automotive program of any value will be run by ASE Master Technicians who oversee the repairs. If it isn't fixed properly, the customer can bring it back and have it done right for free. I'm just finishing my second semester in about 2 weeks and I have yet to see a car brought back to my school's garage. Again, hopefully you have something similar in the area.
