Are you an over breather?
Learn how to improve your sleep, reduce stress, lower anxiety, improve your athletic performance and improve your overall health in pretty much every way and you don’t need to go anywhere, buy anything or even really do anything. Sounds weird?
Let’s do a BOLT test!
Body. Oxygen. Level. Test.
1. Relax and sit down for 5 minutes.
2. Have a watch or timer next to you or count.
3. Sit up straight
4. Take a normal breath in through your nose.
5. Exhale a normal breath out through your nose.
6. Then pinch your nose with your fingers so you’re basically on an empty breath and start timing.
7. Time how long it takes for you to feel the first stress or an desire to breathe. It could be the first involuntary contraction of your breathing muscle.
8. Your breathing should then return back to normal within a few breaths.
It’s not about how long you can hold your breath for. It’s not about your physical fitness. It’s about how long is it until your brain sends a signal for you to breathe.
The health indicators this gives you are huge!
Breath work is both simple and not always easy.
Timing result guidelines:
Under 10 seconds: Elderly or infirm. Indicates a chronic dysfunctional breathing pattern and most likely feeling tired and wired.
If this is you then there is HUGE potential for you to feel SO MUCH BETTER in everything you do in your life whether it’s sitting in a chair all day or being active.
10-25 seconds: Under 25 is considered dysfunctional breathing and is the average score a lot of people start with.
You’re doing ok, get stressed out and overwhelmed and again huge room for improvement.
25-40
You’re doing well and can thrive even more!
40+
You’re really good and am guessing you enjoy a good state of health. You move through the world with ease. You’re strong, not very stressed and sleep well.

    🙌🏻 😭 This is absolutely revolutionary!!! I’m so excited about finding y’all that I feel like crying tears of joy. After recently injuring myself trying to gradually and safely work my way up to heavy lifting, having been taught it’s essential for menopausal women, I remembered a friend of mine talking about staying strong and in shape with dynamic stretching, and I’ve been seeing random videos here and there of people doing these types of amazing flowing movements, and I knew there was something to it, as these people seem to be “one” with their bodies, but I was clueless as to where to start… and my friend lives hours away. Tonight, I searched dynamic stretching, which I’ve done before, but this time I found you, Julie!! I watched a short clip of your movement snacks, and then I searched for a routine but found this video. This video started playing, and I found myself doing my own movement snack while I listened-sort of like a combination of tai chi and ballet, and I absolutely LOVED it!!! I didn’t know what I was doing, but I was just enjoying the movement. It was FUN!! More fun than I’ve had exercising is a very, very long time, and it intuitively makes so much sense to me that moving my body in a wide variety of movements will keep me flexible and less prone to injury. I want to do this forever!! I cannot wait to learn more from you both, as I definitely want to get into more advanced movements for building strength. I want to get my parents into this too!! I think my mom will enjoy it-I may have to work on my dad, but I’ll try to find some of Jared’s routines for him! He has started having hip issues, and I know movement snacks will help him!! 43:08 THIS is incredible. I have been very leery of doing deadlifts and squats, but I’ve been cautiously doing them anyway. Hearing that balance exercises makes you just as strong is amazing!! I’m not going for bulk anyway-I’m going for strength and health!! I’m sorry this is so long, but I’m just amazed. Thank you both sooo, so much for sharing!! I was feeling discouraged and confused, and y’all have given me so much hope!! ❤❤❤

    Hi Julie, love how you relate the philosophical principles of movement arts to the rest of your life - which is what is hould be all about. I recently read your book Breaking the Jump and think it is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read (and I read a lot of them, as a social scientist). The tragic story of the father-son relationship between Raymond and David Belle and the rest of the Belles and how it fueled the conflicts of the first generation is captivating reading. I am surprised it is not more well known. Also I am intrigued by the similarities between the early group of french suburban youths and my own experiences as a youth in the 80s. We trained in similar ways, never naming it, inspired by Jackie Chan, ninja movies and Bruce Lee as well. Still moving to this day and appreciating the lessons it has given me for my approach to life in general. Wishing you all the best recovery and learning experience.
