Mach Loop - The Spur - 12.8.24
My latest visit to the Mach Loop and my first visit to the 'Spur' viewing point.
The aircraft were slightly further away than at CAD West.
Certainly not the busiest day (it could have been great!) but the weather didn't help that, with a RAF Phenom, a flight of F-15E's AND a flight of RAF Typhoon's cancelling due to the cloud.
I wouldn't normally have posted this video as it's not the best but I wanted to show (and warn!) potential visitors to the loop just how quickly the weather can change (both ways).

LEGO Jaws Build (pictures)

A hastily put together video of pictures showing my build of the long awaited (for me anyway!) LEGO Jaws set. Took approximately 6 hours to build (I did it non stop). A few fiddly bits, especially in the bow of the Orca and of course tying the rigging taught without bending the mast. Overall it was a really good build and it looks absolutely stunning on the diorama. I've just got to find a perm...

Latest visit to the Mach Loop. Bright sunny day which with being up on Cad West with the sun directly in front meant very harsh light. The video recorder on my phone certainly didn't like it!!! I also couldn't get my panning right so the photos area bit iffy. A C-130J from Mildenhall went through Bwlch and exited North 3 times but never came through Cad which was more than slightly annoying!!! ...

Another trip to Cad West on the Mach Loop. Couple of new (for me) items came through today, kicked off by the Qatari Hawk T.2's. A TDA (temporary danger area) was in place over Cader Idris around midday which closed off the loop for approximately 4 hours. Business certainly picked up when it opened with another new item (for me) coming through!!!

Another visit to the Mach Loop and Cad West. The weather was lovely and sunny when I arrived but it soon closed in with low cloud and the odd bit of drizzle throughout the day. We still had some impressive passes from the aircraft though so it was still an enjoyable day with great company.

Another video from Mach Loop. A day that was filled with the sound of angry wasps aka Texans!!! Some Hawk T.2's did also come out to play, but the undisputed star of the day was the RAF A400 Atlas. It was seriously impressive!!! Edit - I've just noticed that the film keeps glitching on the Texans. I've no idea why as I've done nothing different to what I normally do (when filming or editing).

My first trip to the Mach Loop since tearing a ligament in my right knee (ironically whilst up the Mach Loop!) in mid-February. Another slow day with only a single Typhoon during the morning and a single Hawk on the afternoon coming through (an RAF A400 Atlas and a RAF Texan went through Bwlch but didn't come through Cad). The massive plus point was that the Typhoon turned out to be the RAF dis...
RAF Red Arrows display at the Midlands Air Festival - Sunday 2nd June 2024

The full Sunday display of the RAF Red Arrows at the Midlands Air Festival '24. It was fantastic to see the team back flying with 9 aircraft and their trademark 'Diamond 9' taking centre stage once again. Taken with my iPhone on top of my stills camera so it does get a bit wobbly at times, but overall I don't think it's too bad! (Video has been uploaded 'as is' so no editing has taken place)

4 new koi for the pond courtesy of The Carp Company www.carpco.co.uk Yes I know the blanket weed needs sorting (would you believe it that I got a bucket full of it out less that a week ago!). I've already got the stuff to put in, I just need the water to get up to 10 degrees for it to work effectively.

It's a sign that the weather has gotten a lot milder over the past week or so as the fish are feeding like crazy!!! Even the new fish, that were only put into the pond yesterday, are already barging their way into the mix. I'm still experimenting with the height of the feeding 'ring' but there's not much (if any) food that ends up in the skimmer at the moment.

Only my second trip to the Mach Loop and it was another quiet one with only 3 x RAF Texan's and a single RAF Hawk T.2 flying through. Looking at the trackers throughout the day, most of the RAF and USAF 'fast jet' low level sorties went through the Lake District instead (typical!). Hopefully one day I'll get lucky and they'll all go through the loop when I'm up there!!! As always though, it was...

I had a crazy (borderline idiotic) idea that the garden would look nice with a pond in it. After getting the green light to start, work began on August 24th. Due to more weather delays than I care to remember (and a trip to A&E!) it has finally been completed just over 9 weeks later on October 28th. The items used (that I can remember):- Swell UK deluxe pond kit - www.swelluk.com/swell-filter-b...

The 2023 birthday present to myself - LEGO Concorde The first LEGO kit I've made in 25 years!!! Quite an easy kit to build. Individually numbered bags held the parts for the various sections of the build. Easy to follow instructions. Just a couple of fiddly bits when building the gearing system to operate the landing gear but nothing too bad. Took me about 6 1/2 hours in total to build.

Nice one, what is the the length, width and depth Thanks
@@ak47miah 5m long x 2m wide x averages 1m deep but there is a deeper part. It’s approximately 10,000 litres
Excellent thank you
That photo of the typhoon in invasion stripes livery made the trek worthwhile. Stunning! Thank you.
Yes it certainly made the day worthwhile. I just need to be up there when the Lakenheath F-15’s & F-35’s come through
Do an update mate how did ya little filter box go ?
It’s worked fine, but then I expected it to as the pond isn’t overstocked like some that you see. I did have a slight ammonia spike when the blanket weed all died off as it overloaded the bio loading but it was only minor and then all back to normal with no ill effects 👍🏻 I’d planned to build a bog filter to help keep the nitrate and phosphate levels down (they weren’t high anyway but the blanket weed still exploded once we had some sun) but I had a fall whilst trekking and tore the MCL in my right knee so I’ve been restricted as to what I can do until it’s healed.
Noticed you have some blanket weed be careful with that as it can clog your pump and srip oxygen from the water, its best to treat it as soon as you see it with cloverleaf blanket answer or the more powerful kusuri powder gold. We've tried the evolution aqua stuff in the past and it hasn't worked for us. On another note pond looks clear even with only a box filter ! Do you use pond clay ?
Hi Oliver. The blanket weed has gone now. I used the blanket answer once the water temperature had increased and it soon got rid of it. There’s also more plants now too so they’ll help to keep the nitrate levels down (the blanket weed hasn’t come back……yet!). Yes the box filter does do a pretty good job but I also think it helps that the pond isn’t over stocked so it’s running well within its limits. No I don’t use pond clay. To be honest it’s not something I’ve looked at. As it’s a new pond (dug end of summer 2023) I just wanted to see how it went for a year before messing about with it too much.
@@danspuggti that's good honestly blanket weed is a pain in any pond even ones with a drum filter like ours 😂 what really helps (when pump fed) is a retro bottom drain and an Aqua Forte compact sieve. They go well in front of a multi bay or eazy pod but I don't see why you couldn't fit one to a box filter. They pop up on eBay occasionally for around £120-£150 or so depending on condition and only take 2 minutes to clean ! If you were to buy one just make sure it has the rubber gasket around the wire mesh as the early models didn't have this and dirt could get through the gaps. Check out some CZcams videos of the sieve and you'll see what I mean but it is only a pre filter and doesn't take out fines nor does it do any sort of biological so you still need to feed it into another filter but they sure are effective ! Hope all goes well for your pond !
Hello Dan what pond filter are you using?
Hi Kieron, it’s this one: www.swelluk.com/swell-filter-box-premium-45000-complete-pond-kit?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzu3R9vuKhgMVfEFBAh1F4wFWEAQYAiABEgKcc_D_BwE#filter-box-premium-45000-complete-pond-kit It does what I need it too as it’s not (and will never been) an overstocked pond. I’m also currently in the process of building a bog filter for it too.
Hello Dan Yeah Iv got the same one ready to install on my pond as my bay filter has broken after 2 years of use how do you remove the sponges and is they anything that you dislike about the filter?
To be honest the pond has only been up and running since mid last October so it would be unfair of me to properly criticise/praise the filter this early on but so far there’s been no issues 🤞🏻 My only niggle is the 2 drain holes on the bottom at the back of the box. Just have to be mindful of where you position the box so you can access them. I am looking at fitting hose tail valves to mine and some flexi pipe but again you need to be mindful of the space behind the box. I’ve not had to remove the sponges yet but they are on ‘racks’ (2 sponges on each) and there’s a plastic plate on the bottom which unclips and the sponges slide off. I did try to remove one plate once as a test and the clips on the plate are very tight, so I’ll cross that bridge when I need to 😂
@@danspuggti thank you for the reply Iv had this swell filter sitting in the greenhouse for the past one and a half years but my filter stand with my kockney koi bay filter collapsed and it’s damaged all the fibreglass so I’m in the process of setting my swell up this week I bought it cheap second hand from a friend for £100 at the time I thought it was a bargain as I thought it was the 25000ltrs but after checking today it’s the 45000ltrs and the brushes could do with replacing or deep cleaning as they are in a mess I tried pushing the clips out earlier but didn’t want to break them
@@kieronknowles3646 I think on the Swell website it’s about £60 for a new set of sponges. Oh I will most definitely end up breaking some clips off when I eventually have to deep clean mine 😂 🤦🏻♂️
Nice koi. Mine are same at minute, need a good clean out think I'll wait a bit longer
Cheers mate 👍🏻 It’s the blanket weed in mine that needs getting rid of. As soon as we had some sunny days back in February it just exploded! I did get a bucket full of it out manually but you’d never know! I’ve got the stuff to put to get rid of it in but just waiting for the water to get warm enough for it to work properly.
Nice
They’re not like that now. With the overnight temperatures and frosts over the past 3 days the water is back down to 4°C and the fish are huddled together by the plant baskets
@@danspuggti Yeh I'm same here with mine this weather's doing my head in. Thought spring was coming early, getting excited to be let down.
Saw these guys at the Southport Air Show and they were phenomenal. I'd say that they were better than the Red Arrows.
They are fantastic. Certainly better than most teams and most definitely better than the Red’s!
It just so happened to be my first ever visit to the Mach Loop up there on the hill. I was maybe a few meters above you, stood beside the style leading to the next field. I did not know what to expect and was over the moon to even see anything. Three Texans and a Hawk really made my day. I even got five keepers and one that I will most likely print. I will return.😀
Yes I was stood just below where you were. I went back up again on Monday but only saw 3 Hawks, and they didn’t come through until late afternoon (I’d forgotten that Lakenheath was closed as it was the Super Bowl the day before 🤦🏻♂️). I won’t be back up for a couple of weeks though as I slipped on my way back down the hill and twisted my right knee so it’s rather sore 😭
Sooooo you do know that the railroad ties have arsenic and other chemicals right? If it hasn’t happened already, you’re gonna lose all your fish when it rains!
Thank you for your concerns, but considering that in the UK it’s pretty much rained 90% of the time since October I honestly think if there was going to be any issues regarding the sleepers they would have arose before now (and the water quality and the fish are absolutely fine) 👍🏻
His fish didn't look happy topping like that. The one by itself didn't look happy either
One heck of a hike!! Well worth it tho'
It really is! It doesn’t help that I’m fat and unfit either 😂 Certainly well worth the effort though! I’m just hoping that the next time I’m up there the USAF F-15’s and F-35’s from Lakenheath come through 🤞🏻
Excellent!!
Thank you Mikeel. It was certainly hard work made worse by the weather. I’ve got plans to install a bog filter and waterfall this spring so I will probably do a video for that too
Great vid of the build. Looking forward to seeing those fish grow over time...😉👍
Thanks Andy. Obviously the Chagoi potentially could be huge, but for me it’s the bright orange koi with black markings I want to see develop. It’s a ‘Beni Kumonryu’ which apparently have a habit of changing colour through their life!
A great build Dan mate - Loved the video - I subscribed. One comment mentioned a bigger filter I make my own and they work great you could incorporate it into a waterfall.
Cheers mate and thank you (I subscribed to you back)🙏🏻 Yes I did toy with the idea of incorporating a waterfall into the build but the weather we have had in the UK since summer has been awful so it was a case of getting it done before winter set in (not that it has…..yet!). I have been looking at bog filters etc but not decided on anything yet. All things that’ll keep my mind occupied over the winter months. Fish have been in 12 weeks now and fingers crossed the water parameters seem pretty steady at the moment. Temperature 5.5°c pH 7 Nitrates 5 ppm Phosphate 0.5 ppm Nitrites 0 ppm Ammonia 0.25 ppm I test every 4 days (these are today’s figures). The ammonia fluctuates between 0 ppm and 0.25 ppm depending on how much they’ve been fed, but I’m also very aware that the filter is still very young and maturing.
Thank you Dan. I am orinsly from Nottingham but I emigrated to Newfoundland in Canada in 1990. Keeping Koi here is quite the challenge but I have found big filters are easy to build and they are way better than purchased filters and are easier to clean. Good luck with your pond.
@@GreymsView-ix8yi I’m West of Birmingham so still in the ‘Midlands’ area. It’s the first pond I’ve had so it’s all a steep learning curve but having tank aquariums for years means that I already understand the Nitrogen Cycle etc. Everything is just bigger!
Awesome, you might need more filtration for a pond of that size
Thanks 🙏🏻 I’m well within the ‘koi’ filter rating (the specification said up to 11,500 litres for koi, which I take as an upper limit, and the pond is approx 9300 litres) but it’s not going to be an overstocked pond anyway. I will probably only have maybe 3-4 more fish and that will be it (I personally think the overstocked ponds are cruel). I’ll let it run for a full year and see what happens.
just subscribed
