on a good day I reckon the corolla would handle this
With some friends to help you out a Corolla would be fun
Hi Neil love the scenery in this video with the snow up the valley. Enjoyed the ride along making your way towards and over Burkes Pass. The drone footage and just stunning and a great Birds Eye view of your crew on the trip. Loved it!!
Thanks Julia
so you didnt pay your $20? Robyn and Malcolm put alot of effort into keeping the track safe and open not to mention that if you have a mishap its them that come to the rescue, as you say its one of the best tracks around here
The first time I went though there was though their land and Malcolm showed us around, the history and maps etc. This was a last-minute thing finding the bridge was easy, I would need an address for the farm and I wanted to drive both ways though the tunnels so I just stayed on the DOC track. Next time I will see Robyn and Malcolm and get the map and explore the aera more and check out the tunnels you can walk in.
I was watching the maculy hut one
I see what I’ve done, I was watching another one of yours
@@gdog1443 That's good, it helps the algorithms.
Have you edited this? I’m sure I watched this the other day and you went right to the hut and had a bbq and showed the inside of the hut
No, it's not been edited. Red stag hut is at the 29-minute mark.
Red stag hut is on our menu when we head down
Thats good and don't forget the Macaulay that's a really good hut to stay the night in.
@@realneilsadventures yeah we went to Macaulay last summer just ran out of time but we intend staying south a lot longer this coming summer
Sounds good
So glad I found your channel mate. I'm loving these videos. Yeah the little Mitsubishi L300. Coping well with all that. I've got an L400, I love it!!!! I need to join a club so I can explore with a little more confidence, and enjoy these epic views first hand.
The L 300 does all the tracks we do. Joining the club taught me where I can go 4WDriving.
Perfect day Neil, great scenery, well done.
Thanks Graeme, you don't get that sort of 4WD run in Oz.
I dont know if its the snow hiding the features (rocks) but that looked an easier drive than up to Mcauley
Yes, the snow made it a lot easier drive. But also the fact that the river level was so low.
im subscribed,, we did that track 10 years ago it’s a good drive to a n awesome place
Yes it was a great track a few years ago, but now the river has moved more to the true left you can only go up there when the river is low.
AWESOME!!!!! Just awesome. What a beautiful day. What amazing scenery. New subscriber here!!!!
Thanks for subscribing, It was a great day out.
I know its snow and boys were having fun but do we really need advertise that online in a video… when there big movement to get people to behave in the backcountry…. Places getting destroyed and if they watch someone else do it they think its okay type thing
Also prob be carefull using your drone in youtube videos and saying the locations…. DOC having crack down on unpermited drone use
I am trying to encourage people to join clubs where there is training and controlled conditions, so I thought showing what just happened naturally on a snow covered river bed would show you can have fun in clubs.
I will pass this information to the operator
do you think you could get to the true right of the valley since the river moved looks a lot more spread out than it used to be
Yes, I know someone who went up that side last summer.
It looked very different back in Oct 1993.
Yes, the DOC track would have been pretty good back then.
This would be so much good fun even in the rain makes it more funny beautiful West Coast my favourite❤😮😊
Yes, it is fun. Gets me out and about.
@realneilsadventures That's the one everyone needs to get out and enjoy life. I Can't wait till I get a truck
Hello Fellow NZ adventure channel! 💜💜💜
I really like your video on Queenstown and will check out more of your channel.
Do you have to cross the Mathias river? Is there much water in the Mathias?
Yes, but it was completely dry.
Such a beautiful spot! I have been wanting to head that way for a while and stay at the Reischek Hut. Can't find anybody with a 4wd to take me though. Know anybody that would make the trip for me if I pay them? :)
I overnighted at Reischek Hut a few years ago. You have to cross the Rakaia where we did at the power poles, then again upstream where there wont be a track across. This in mind and the fact the the hut is a long way up the river I believe it would be best to go there with at lest 2 vehicles.
@@realneilsadventures I was just going to get a heli to drop me off but it's pretty expensive. I assume getting two guys to drive two 4wds all the way there and back twice (for pickup as well) is going to cost me just as much haha
Hunters go up there and hunt for a few days etc. Maybe find a hunting page on facebook.
@@realneilsadventures thanks, I'll have a look!
Thank you for that. It all looked very different back in 1989 when I got there with my friend Karl in my LR 2A.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting. The Rakaia clearly had not flooded in some time. That road was so well defined. Do you need permission from Manuka Point Station to do this trip?
No, just stay off their property like we did. It's well marked.
Another excellent video, Neil - thank you so much for your efforts! Hey, I have a personal question: how did you meet nice, mature people to do these drives with? The knowledge and history in your videos is fantastic. We are in the process of joining the Nelson 4x4 Club, but they only seem to offer weekday trips, which limits our options to meet like-minded people. It sucks for us 'younger ones' (and that is probably the last time in my entire life I'll ever call myself young!) - it means taking time off work regularly. So considering (and respecting) that, how/where did you meet these people who enjoy and respect NZ instead of just wanting to do the biggest doughnuts in the first bog-hole? These are precisely the kind of trips I have envisioned taking my wife on. Although I know the bumps will be a thing by the end of the day... But wine will fix that. But, as you said - is the destination or the journey? For me, it's both. FYI: We have an LC100 series all sorted for off-road - and soon to be decked out with draws, a bed, and other things (she loves camping). :)
I met these fine gentlemen in the South Canterbury 4 Wheel Drive club. Incidentally a number of years ago we had a long weekend trip to Nelson where our host in Nelson had arranged for us to go out with the Nelson 4x4 club. Day 1 we did the Maungtapu Track, a key and permission had been obtained. Day 2 a very obliging Nelson club member took us to a farm they had access to for training days etc. which had a fantastic outlook over Motueka to Nelson. Day 3 the club took us over a pilon track to lake Rotoroa (I think) on our way home. I was impressed with the access the club had to farmland and the size of the club. They had people who were into 4x4 touring (the stuff I do) and people who were more Competitive. I think you will find what you want with the club, It would have been about 10 years ago when I was up there, say hello for me I wonder if anyone remembers us. 4 of us went on that trip.
Looked another great trip. Thanks for the look around the hut and the info on costs to stay etc. incredible scenery. I worked up that area about 12 years ago or so doing possum eradication for TB control. Was a nice area to work. Saw allot of deer while i walked the area.
Thanks for the comments, you must have done a good job as I didn't see any possums.
Nice work Neil. Keep up the posting.
Thanks, will do!
Well Neil, being one of the folk on this trip I would have to say that both the trip in and out and the destination were superb! Made better by the great company. Thanks guys for a great weekend! Awesome video Neil. Lots of work
Thanks Wayne, I have fond memories of the weekend.
Stunning scenery. I will get there one day
Yes, I was pleased I did it.
When did you do this we want to do this I know where you are crossing it’s just what time of the year mean as
It was 2 weeks ago 20th and 21st of July. Environment Canterbury, River flow data. Get to know that web site, the river flow is updated every 4 hours. The Rakaia River was reading about 70 to 90 cubic meters at Fighting Hill when we did it. Power generating from lake Coleridge causes the 20 cube fluctuation. But you cross above that.
@@realneilsadventuresthanks for the info
Amazing video, my fav part is the foggy river crossing at the start.
Yes, it was unusual weather conditions at the start of the valley.
Terrific. Thanks.
Thank you for watching
Is there still a locked gate on this track?
I haven't heard of a locked gate on this track, and I have done it twice, how long ago did it have a locked gate?
@@realneilsadventures - Yep, was a gate about 10-15kms in from the Iron Bridge side. Last time I went through a code was needed - must admit that was about 15 years ago! I was wondering if some of those old tracks we used to do are still drivable.
Thats interesting, must have changed now as of the last 3 years there has been no locked gate. I have a SC4WD club meeting tonight so I will ask if anyone knows about when it was locked.
@@robmcintyre4557 yea I have a 4WD NZ book and it states there's a locked gate on the western side of the Mackley with a phone number to call for access. The book is at least 8 years old now tho.
I have been told that they properly had to unlock it as it is a public road.
AWESOME video! We have to do that track at some stage. Thank you heaps! I was going to try and arrange for us viewers to all chip in and sort you with a mic, the first part was a hard to listen to, but then it improved so I assume you have the gear. Thank you for another awesome educational video. I look forward to meeting you on the track some day!
Thank you for your comments, and it will be great when I start meeting some of my viewers that I don't know on the tracks. I have a better mic coming for my voice overs, and I should be able to use it when I remote the GoPro. I have been keen photographer for a long time, but I'm new to the video side of things.
first time in there looking for some new hunting grounds my jeeps fuel pump stopped working had permission to come through from one of the farms over by kurow was a long walk out from the Kyeburn digging's to kurow
Wow, that is a long walk. The farm was it Awakino and into Hut Creek hut?
yes was up hut creek and down to Awakino station they were very good and gave me a lift to kurow think the track got a lot of water damage a few years ago Didn't make it to work the next day my legs were stuffed was just above Tailings Hut when my jeep broke down. is a very cool drive along the huge shingle screes when you come in from hut creek
I had a SC4WD club trip organized to go though there paying $10 per vehicle, but a snowstorm that November canceled it. Then the track got washed out.
@@realneilsadventures yes was Awakino station through hut creek is an awesome drive over the huge shingle screes
@@realneilsadventures sorry if i replied twice to the same question think youtube isn't showing my reply's for me
Hi, how long are the tracks? How meny is there
What I did was about 10km in total including the return. So about 2 Km up the river and 3 though the tunnels and up the hill then return.
Cool to find out about this, wish I'd known when we were last down that way.
Well, you now have a reason to come back this way.
at Carneys creek head across to the Curtis Memorial Hut is a long grass island on the true left of the havelock with a good track on it that leads to the hut. The bolders have been breeding on the Forbes river just before mistake flat the last few years st winifrids hut is a cool spot a bit more up the valley if you want a bit of a challenge you want to give yourself 3 day's to enjoy it if you go that far.
Thanks for that.
Do you have to crawl to lease holders to get access?
No, as long as you follow the DOC sign to Havelock you are on the river.
Some great footage Neil!!! What a lovely adventure
Thanks Poppy
Found your channel the other week and have subbed, really like your videos thanks. Beautiful country up the rangitata. How many kms from Peel Forest would you say it was up to the hut where you camped if you know by any chance?
It's 50km from Peel Forest to Mesopotamia Station where you turn onto the river track, then about 30km or so on the tracks
@@realneilsadventures Thanks be nice to head up some day. Look forward to your next adventure 👍
What snorkel do you run on the Fortuner I have the Toyota oem on my N80 comments say they are not that well sealed Ta Gazz
It's a Toyota snorkel, I got Toyota to install it before I got the car.
@realneilsadventures So far it’s performing OK then ?
@@GazzMcara I haven't been in deep water yet, so it's just a high air intake to get less dust.
Yeah that’s on my agenda not as bad as I thought I have been to growler hut great video
Yes, I thought it would be harder than this.
@@realneilsadventures I got plenty of time to watch videos I’m parked up in bed I was involved in a head on collision just out of Blenheim broke both my ankles but the right ankle needed more repairs , just had it done so I got lots of time ATM cheers
Well, head on would be scary. I wish you a speedy recovery.
Far out that awesome - South Island?
Yes, west coast near Reefton
@@realneilsadventures I though so, South Island has all the cool stuff!
What GPS did you use to do the "breadcrumbs"?
I have been using the car GPS but when the battery is disconnected you lose and the breadcrumbs, so I'm going to get a mount on the dash for my cell phone so it can stay in contact with the satellite and record them on the NZ Topo Map
Hey Neil, would my standard Pajero Sport be ok on this trail? The only mod it has is decent AT tyres.
First of all, that area is closed in winter, but if you want to try it out in summer when its dry would be best. If you start form the Nasby end would be the easiest. Mt Buster rd. You can get to the diggings easier that way and see how you go. If in doubt go back down Mt Buster rd. Thats the road I came out, its worth a look so is Nasby.
Thank you for sharing, unfortunately my little 4x4 wouldn't make it, as it's just too light and would float off in the bigger water crossings lol. I like to hunt and fishm more than just 4x4 driving, but I did appreciate your video.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Why ruin the experience by driving a truck through it, walking too hard?
Not everyone can walk 10km along a track, NZ has plenty of walking tracks. In my younger days I did a few and highly recommend them,
@@realneilsadventures Fair enough, just seems a bit odd to drive a massive hulking gas spewing 4WD through this beautiful place, especially when you're driving in the water and stuff, Im certain theres wildlife you're disrupting by doing so..
@@willz0452stay indoors then your call

Offroading is its own experience to be enjoyed, hiking is another one. Everything in balance.
Now I remember black bluff, way back in the 70s when I was a member of the Canterbury mountaintain club. One easter weekend i walked up Clyde to sinclear stream from erewhon station. No 4x4s in those days had to walk. Went up to a bivy on good friday climbed mt warrior on saturday or maybe sunday but during the night the weather turned rather ugly it poured and poured we had to walk out on monday.. Consequently the clyde turned into a raging torrent from one side of the valley to the other. Only way out was over black bluff. Boulders almost as big as houses were rolling g down the river. Was a dam nightmare. They were the good ol days.
Thats amazing, well done.
I did do a comment not sure what happened to it we keen as
Found it and replied, thanks for your comments

That is one awesome slab of rock!! I now need to research the geology. How did that slab of rock become? I have so many questions-is there gold in those seams? Thanks for that! Good thing it's Friday, and I have all weekend. But more than that, thank you for the video; that's now on the to-do list - nice work. :)

Increíble! What exhaust system is on your beast . Sounds 👍
That might be when I had the gopro attached to the snorkel.
I’ve always wanted to go up there and black bluffs what was the name of the second hut where you talked to the guy there I have done a lot of area down south but that one’s been on my mind for a while now better get my aa into G
That is the Lawrence Hut, the only DOC hut in the valley.
