T5 Manual Gearbox Fluid/ Oil + BA BF Power Steering Pump Replacement/ Flush and Bleed - XR6 Turbo
I've spent a few hundred km's behind the wheel of the BA and now it's time to attend to some maintenance things. Number 1 is to dump the fluid of the T5 and replace it with fresh fluid - considering the chassis of the car is getting tired, I don't know the last time this was done. Also the prevention is cheaper than the cure!
The power steering pump (which was taken from the old engine) is old, tired and whiney like the great aunt you never visit, which means the power steering system needs attention. I'm replacing the pump and doing a full fluid flush.

I have had alot of enquiries about how much did it cost to get my BA XR6 Turbo back on the road. I bought this car with a blown motor and decided to build it back up again - financially economical of course! No, this wasn't a "No Expense Spared" build, but some things I decided to spend the extra money for one reason or another. For example: I bought a better condition second hand turbo. I boug...

How’d you clip the casing on afterwards you skipped it, my one won’t clip down
It was a struggle but got there in the end. When I do my next service I’ll be using the long filter that can bend 90 degrees. It’s the filter sock that gives you grief
How much did this upgrade cost?
About mid 300’s. I bought during an online sale
Can i just slap the walbro 255 in without upgrading fuel reg. Itd be more for reliability over the two pumps.
You should be able to. I done a major pump upgrade on my XR6 without changing reg, but the factory reg on those are capable. I’m not sure if you would like to trust an old RB30 reg though. Cheers!
thanks man. saved me a bunch
Wish you had the model number for the foot pedal.
Did you give up on this?
It’s back home to its owner. I’ve done my jobs. It’s sitting on new R31 diff, tailshaft wheels & brakes being sorted and ECU wiring next
@@PangazShed do they have a CZcams page I can follow on?
I followed this and used the exact same stuff....it aint working wtf. The derailleur wont shift to the lowest 2 gears no matter I do and im frustrated 😑
Where can I buy
Very helpful and direct help me fix my problem 👍
what size are the hoses you got
For the 525 you need the 160mm length 10mm ID hose. Cheers
Great video dude and the bike looks sick! I'm probably going to do this mod myself but without the 11speed conversion on the back. Was just wondering how easy it was to do the conversion to 1x on the front and if you needed any weird tools. Or if you have any other tips it would be much appreciated.
Changing the front chainring should be straight forward. Normal tools to remove the front chain guide, crank arms etc. The chain might need to be changed to suit the teeth of the new single chainring (if it’s narrow-wide). If you want to change the crank assembly to something more exotic then you will need a bottom bracket tool to suit. But if sticking with simple taper bearing as I have then proceed! Cheers!
@@PangazShed I followed this and used the exact same stuff....it aint working wtf. The derailleur wont shift to the lowest 2 gears no matter I do and im frustrated
@@mattnielsen7639 Check your high limit screw on the derailer.
Can i change a 2x8 to a 1x8??
Yes would be a straight forward mod
Did you have any issue with noisy derailure when shifted to the highest gear? I think i got everything to your setup and just did mine and angle of the chainring to the largest gear is pretty big angle, is it normal to have it noisy?
I don’t have any unusually loud noises that are of concern, I did spend a lot of time trying to get the tuning spot on though.
Hi mate what turbo smart fuel reg did you use and has it been working ok for you?
Hi there, I used the TS-0404-1015. And it’s been working good. Cheers

Cheers Tommy, what a grind 🤣
Great video which I watched after total frustration with my $50 amazon purchase.of a water blaster attachment - it seems my professional Karcher 5/12C. You definitely made the right decision investing in professional grade equipment to avoid pitfalls. Looks like you need to spend a grand to achieve top grade professional results. (as usual). My Karcher apparently hasn't got the guts to create enough suction to transport the media. from the bag (80 Grit Garnet purchased from H&F) to combine with the jet stream....... Based on your set up the karcher flow rate is probably too low at about 10l/min and 2200psi. Your thoughts?
That’s a beefy Karcher, however you’re right, definitely the more flow the better. I think you usually need to look for around the 13L mark and over 3000psi. I wouldn’t call my particular Pressure Unit professional, it’s a knock off Honda unit that’s imported by a local machinery joint in my state. The attachment itself is great due to its quality cast and long lasting carbide tipped nozzle. The golden Amazon cheapies are a glorified suction feed squirty bottle.
Another great video 👍 I’m a new subscriber 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Love the videos mate . Just bought a 5 speed manual xr6 turbo and keen to see what it can handle . Cheers
That’s awesome mate, loads of fun! Thanks for your kind words
I feel your pain - I replaced the manifold and turbo on mine
Greets from Germany. Have all parts now at Home and will do the Same. Thx for uploading.
What size cassette tool did you use to take off the 7speed cassette. My is too big too fit.. do you have the tool spec?
I don’t have the tool spec, it was just a generic cheap one from eBay (comes in a 5 or 6 pce kit). It’s got 12 splines if that helps.
Outstanding UPGRADE no just becose the color the way the bike is going to Performance now
Exactly the upgrade video I needed to see!
If I may offer an idea. Some foot pedal will produce a “chain ratcheting sound”. I assume this is chain and pulley wheel inside, allowing a connection at the front of the pedal to have full ranger travel
Brilliant!!!!!!!!! I might go this route
is the shifting smoother and better than the old altus shifter ? Ive had mine for about 2 weeks and want to upgrade but i really like the altus shifter .
I’m loving the combination of parts. It’s smooth and less clunky than the original 2x system
Did you happen to send the Return to the Centre Crimped return on sender?
I used the original location as the submersible hose in tank was still in one piece
The first 30 secs was gold advice. Goals and a plan.
Mines 360kw and 900nm on a stock btr box lol 😂 trust me the t5 can handle a lot and last along time as my other is running 330kw with a t5 and I’ve never been nice to the poor old thing hahahah there’s a gold b series on Ross reviews with a stock t5 pushing over 900rwhp it’s worth the watch
Far out that’s impressive! All these horror stories about T5 shitting the bed on stock power even N/A. I’ll check out that Ross Reviews vid, cheers
@@PangazShed honestly as long as the box is in good condition ie oil, oil cooler and filter and you should be fine as long as your not abusing it constantly changing while under high rpm and boost pressures, if you’re keen when you give the box a service add a magnet to the inside of the box pan to catch and foreign metals or at least a magnetic sump plug , works wonders good sir I wish I had a power glide but it’s welllllll out of my budget
Good condition, yeah maybe - the input shaft is wobbly as! 🤣 but yes I’ll be doing the oil in the upcoming weeks, handy tip about the magnet! I’ll def be checking the condition of the oil that comes out! I know what you mean about gearbox/ trans upgrades, expensy! I guess the best time to replace is when they no longer do gear shifting things! Cheers mate
@@PangazShed hahahahah yeah bro my thoughts exactly 👍 rare earth magnets work wonders , we get ours off eBay cheap , it’s not gonna save it from disaster but I find it’s a small cheap preventative measure, new clutch will do wonders too. Problem is we get stuck in the mindset of while I’m there I may as well fix lol 😂 never ends ai , I like your content
Are you talking about T5 or T5z as that car in Ross reviews had a T5Z it’s a turbo box different to the NA 5 speeds
Cheers brother muchly appreciated ❤❤
Does it work when blasting upwards? Does water get into the sand hose?
Should work upwards. As long as the syphon (sand) hose is always on top. The Venturi effect of the high pressure water below the sand entry part will cause the vacuum and draw the sand through. Remember the bucket or bag of media is usually ground level not above you so it’s less gravity fed and more Venturi effect.
That unit looks great, its currently out of stock but im chasing the seller of the kit to get an ETA< cos it looks heaps better than the cheap kits. I too bought a large pressure washer for just this purpose, looking forward to getting my hands on this gear. Thanks for making a great video mate.
That works awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Great tool no doubt. Better than using an air compressor and dry blasting.
They both have their pros and cons. This setup is also messy, loud and the flash rust is a problem. Wet sand lodged in crevices can be problematic also.
Perge the line before you start
I tilt my hat good sir. Worked a treat
Unfortunately, Harbor Freight doesn’t sell a bead roller…
That hand is very annoying
Great! Thanks. I’m doing this upgrade on my Vl this weekend.
Awesome! In case you want to do the wiring upgrade, I’ll be uploading a new video of me installing a Walbro 525 in my XR6 with heavy duty wiring. If I decide to upgrade the wiring on the VL (I’ll inspect for any melted or brittle wiring since the upgrade) I’ll do the same as what the video will show as it’s pretty straight forward. Thanks for watching!
Have you run into any problems with replacing the two standard fuel pumps with the one Walbro 255? Does the wiring and relay need to be upgraded?
No problems as the original has a lift pump in tank and a high pressure outside of tank. The 255 is higher in spec that it can handle the lifting and sending to the rail no worries. I didn’t upgrade the wiring as the 255 isn’t a power hungry pump. I would if I went for 460/525 which I recently done to my XR6. But the wiring upgrade was simple really.
Good and thank you, however could you get to the point straight away. Chewing for that long that simple stuff just doesn't make sense.
Thanks for the feedback. It seems some people like lots of detail some people like none. In the future I’ll make 2 versions
what model can you recomment if i want to "upgrade" my 2023 trek marlin 4 gen 2, to a 1 x 9 or maybe 1x10 drivetrain. bit confused on the compatibilit. sorry for newbie question
If your Marlin 4 is an eight speed, you should be able to go up to an 11 speed and anywhere in between.
How much sand are you getting through ? Per time -weight ?
Hi mate, not sure on the particulars, this engine bay took 2 and a half 20kg bags. I think I was blasting for 30 mins total.
@@PangazShed perfect thanks for the reply . I have a kp60 starlet needs the same treatment you gave your corolla it looked to turn out real good I watched a few more of your vids after this comment 👍
Bloody legend, cheers!
Now your mountain bike is a real mtb
Except the “shocks”
Can you use soda thru it instead of sand? I'm going to be doing engine parts and don't want to chance sand particles getting lodged. Thanks
Not sure to be honest! If the soda can be pulled via suction feed and the attachments nozzle is fit for purpose then I don’t see why not. Cheers
Thanks my friend! Take care
What type of sand?
You can use any normal blasting media, but for cheapness I used kiln dried sand found at a landscape store. Cheers
Is this the 30 dollars or the 150 dollar one online?
It would be the $150 one. They have the better quality nozzle
Thanks. It looks like your tool in the video is a lot more effective than others
@thehicksfix9470 yep I wouldn’t bother with those other cheapy toys
Love what you did with your Trek Marlin 5 going single chainring! Planning to do the same soon. Any issues with chain derailment since you switched? Would appreciate any insights!
Hi there! No issues with derailment! The only thing I had to do was retune it slightly to make sure all the shifting was spot on. I didn’t have it set up quite right once the vid was finished. Followed a tune walkthrough and it’s been perfect since.
@@PangazShed This is awesome! Great job also on choosing the optimal parts for the conversion, without the need to change the rear free hub and pedal bearings!
Yep budget friendly! When the OEM parts fail I’ll replace them with better. But hey, I might even replace them with OEM! I just like the ease of conversion. Thanks for checking out the vid. Cheers
Nice work thanks for sharing .
