James here, One of the most difficult transitions for internal and external auditors to make is that the new IATF16949 standard tells us that we need a "PROCESS" to Identify Special Characteristics. While the old ISOTS16949 standard, said that we need to "IDENTIFY" special characteristics. If the process indicates that we do not have any special characteristics, assuming the process is documented and followed, then we will have none in the d-pfmeas, as per the most recent standard. The old standard indicated, there was no choice but to identify special characteristics. More importantly, the entire reason for identifying special characteristics was to communicate them to the people working in MFG. In a highly automated process, it is job set up (recipe) by a process engineer, NOT an operator that controls the characteristics of the product. This is how MFG is ran today, the operator is only there to ensure that reaction mechanisms are followed if the tool has an unplanned interruption, i.e., stop operating.
