The Enchantments Thruhike // Camping in the Core Zone
Somehow we scored Enchantments Core Zone permits to coincide with the peak of annual larch madness and the first snowfall of the season. The first section of our week-long traverse also coincided with the last day of a powerful atmospheric river across the PNW. Spooky clouds, heavy rain, and high elevation snow kept us forest-bound for the first few days until the storm finally broke.
When the atmospheric river died off, and the sun came out shining bright over a foot of fresh snow. We left our storm-protected shelter in the lower forests and climbed up into the alpine core. We had high ambitions for climbing objectives while in the Enchantments. The fresh snow and thick layer of persistent ice said otherwise. Instead we mapped out a route traversing Annapurna Peak to the Witches Tower, and a separate traverse of East and West Enchantment Peaks. The granite walls of this region have me eager for a future return trip without postholing through waist-deep snow.
The Enchantments Core is the place to be when Autumn returns to the Cascades. Golden larches atop a landscape of untouched snow, reflecting in countless alpine lakes. We were grateful to experience the turning of the seasons in such a remarkable place.

The Teanaway Trifecta // Trail Running around Lake Ingalls
zhlédnutí 400Před 4 měsíci
I’d been wanting to explore the Teanaways for a while now-a surprisingly arid and desert-like subrange of the notoriously wet and forested Cascades. This was our first adventure on a 2 week Autumn romp up the Eastern flank of the Washington Cascades. With plans to summit Mount Stuart spoiled by the oncoming first snow storm of the season, we found a playful route via trail running around Lake I...

    Awesome video series and beautifully captured. Many of us who live here don’t fully appreciate what we have so close at hand. Perhaps that is for the better since the Olympic trailheads can get crowded - especially on nice weekends. At any rate, at the start, the ferry is actually from Coupville (on Whidbey Island) to Port Townsend, not Seattle. But maybe you are just trying to provide regional geographic orientation for the viewer. The body of water that you crossed in Admiralty Inlet. Fairly common to see harbor porpoises from the ferry and sometimes pacific white sided dolphins and orcas. The water on the east side of Whidbey Island is important early spring feeding area for grey whales (called the Sounders).

Like the folks here, we were from the lowlands and we, too, we were all giggles starting out from the parking lot. However, as we gained elevation and began to tire, things got a lot tougher. The slog from lunch counter to the false summit was long and slow and the altitude and sulfur smell did me in. I made it to the false summit, but that was it. I have a lot of respect for those that summit the northwest's peaks. Doing so ain't easy.

      Great question! Let’s see… so for the first belay anchor we used one screw and one picket. For the first pitch (including the 3 main ice steps), we used 4 screws and one picket. The second belay station was built right above the 3rd ice step/crux with 2 screws and one picket. From there we simul-climbed and I think as a team we placed two pickets during that stretch before unroping and finishing the climb solo.

    If you take those girls back up there, don't make them get up at 2:30 in the morning. There's no reason to do it on this route on Mt. Adams. There are no crevasses or snow bridges that you need to cross on this route, and so I think it's safer to have the snow a bit softer on this route anyway. Why get up in the middle of the night so that you can climb on hard snow or ice when you don't have to worry about the stability of snow bridges? It's easier to self-arrest if you fall on soft snow, and it's not as scary when you're glissading back down from Pikers Peak. If you're going to camp at Lunch Counter, then sleep in, eat a nice breakfast, drink plenty of water, take advantage of a few more hours to acclimate, and then go for the summit. You'll have a better time and you'll feel better.

    Awesome adventure! Thanks for making the effort to shoot and edit. Ski boots all the way up? One person had skis but it appeared conditions may have not permitted a ski descent. Did you ever have to rely on your protection and did it hold as expected? It looked like a fair amount of water in one section and a couple of loose sections. This is the first video I have seen with a detailed running bely. These details are beneficial for people like me who are learning the sport. One of the best Hood videos I have seen!

    • @RadishUprooted
      @RadishUprooted Před 4 měsíci

      Hey thanks! These are the details I was looking for before I climbed it too! We did indeed climb in ski boots, I personally find my ski boots more comfortable for ice climbing than my mountaineering/ice climbing boots--and they have the same degree of performance and protection, if not more. My climbing partner skied the Old Chute from the summit ridge--I can't imagine DKH is a viable ski line ever, to say nothing of the potential for climbing parties on their way up. The ice quality was definitely variable throughout, but there was enough places that had either quality enough ice for screws, or quality enough snow for pickets. I trusted almost every piece of pro we placed, but no one took a whipper on anything. People did take rests that fully weighted the belay stations, and we were half-hanging at all belay stations so they were constantly weighted. The only time a pice looked suspect was a picket at our second belay station after cooking in the direct sun for a while. But we just backed it up with an extra picket and felt fine about it.

    Five friends and I did the Ptarmigan in mid July of 2005. It was a private trip, but three of us were Mountaineers climb leaders. We were rained on up and over the Magic/Mixup col, and spent a wet night at Koolaid Lake. From then on the weather was absolutely phenomenal. We scrambled up to the top of Art's Knoll, leaving the packs on the trail. Red Ledges were snow free, and we swam in Yang Yang Lakes. The route finding was not a problem, there is a social trail that is easy to follow except for the glacier travel. Mountaineering boots and crampons were a must, but there was enough snow on the glaciers to make travel on them pretty easy. I put up a fixed line on the summit of Dome. The next day was a long one, lots of talus descending to Cub Lake. The worst part of the entire trip was negotiating a massive avalanche blowdown above Bachelor Meadows. Once in the meadows we were pleasantly surprised to find that it had been brushed out recently, and we hauled ass down Downey Creek to the car. This was one of the high points of my life, perhaps the most beautiful trip that I've ever done. My favorite spot? White Rock Lakes.
