Two Short Trains by Mongomery Union Station

On July 4, 2016, we took a trip to South Carolina to visit family and friends. While we were in Clemson, SC for Independence Day, I had the opportunity to do a bit of railfanning on the NS line that runs through town. Due to it being a holiday, there was reduced traffic (about 4-5 trains came through during daylight hours; usually there are about 15-20) and because of that, I was only able to c...

The caboose as of October 2019 is now preserved at the Ohio Railway Museum where I volunteer. We are typically open Sundays 12 pm to 4 pm May through December but also offer special events such as Ghost Trolley on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, plus our Letters to Santa 12 to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays during December. Built in 1981, it is the only piece of equipment in our collection that retains YN-2 livery of a current Class I railroad.

I'd just found out that CN had taken up trackage rights on the old Illinois Central. I'm super surprised that it happened ! I rode The City of New Orleans from Chicago to Nawlins in June of '92 via Amtrak. This was done totally from a railfan perspective. It was great to ride those rails & see the Illinnois Central Gulf. I was disappointed that ICG had changed their paint scheme from white, orange with black lettering to all black w white lettering at the time. Now I feel fortunate enough to have seen them at all... At the time, I was also thrilled to see Wisconsin Central around Chicago. Plus the CTA/Metra commuter trains, which were still using the old E-8's still half way in their Burlington Northern livery.... But man, CN reaching down to Nawlins ? I also recall seeing tons of sidings with bulkhead ended flatcars stacked with pulp wood & high-sided hoppers filled with wood chips. I was guessing, at the time, that this was the particle board/plywood industry in action on these rail sidings. A lot of smoke in these areas, too. I'll give myself a lot of credit for having remembered any of the above; I was severely crippled at the time- drunk ! Young, dumb & full of cum, I mean, Newcastle Brown Ale !! 😎

When the sun is out and there is no chance of rain, the sun will illuminate the line good enough for rear view clips sometimes. your best chance of that however is in the 2000 series cars, and if the driver has rolled up the sun visor; also because the 2000 series cars do not have blue sun visors in the glass. I got a great rear view clip from JJK Center all the way to Shiloh the other day, but I want to try getting a clip from at least UMSL south to Shiloh before I upload it all together.
