How I'm doing less work in the garden next year | Garden Tour WEEK 35, 2024
I'm always looking for ways to do less work for more food in the garden, and today I want to show you just how much of the garden is going to grow back in the spring with little to no effort from me!

Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 8a. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

    I hope you can answer my question asap please and thank you!!!! I have a community garden where I live and paid for a couple of plots this year. Unfortunately, it is not fenced and between the rabbits, deer and people I am loosing lots of my bounty. People are stealing my onions in particular and I think if I don't harvest them asap I won't have any to harvest. My onion however have NOT even started to brown much less break at the neck. I am torn as what to do. If I harvest them now, even with proper curing are they likely to store long term? Do you know? Any advice is appreciated!

    The bay leaf will do very well. I live a little north of you. It will expand by runners and get 10 ft high. It tolerates aggressive pruning well.

  • @Anotherhumanexisting

    Just found ur channel from the tulsi tea video! Question, how do you know when the hanging bundles are dry enough to be shelf stable? And how to store them? My room humidity is anywhere from 30-60%. I just got a tulsi plant from someone locally on FB and am going to try to get some propagations and harvests before end of season. So thank you for that video!

    thanks for sharing this video. i'm exited to see the perennials come back up next spring. - most likely the turmeric is perennial (with thick mulch after the first frost), it is in my zone 7b (North Carolina). - Pigeon pea is a tropical plant and it was not able to make it in my winters. but is a good one to seed in spring, its a nitrogen fixer. - My figs were like that too in the first 2 years, hopefully yours will thrive from year 3, definitely they need good amount of water during their first years. - cucamelon plant is not a perennial in my area. i'm growing them from seed every year. but you are further south, so it might overwinter for you.

    The reason your paper wasps are chewing on your wood handrails like that is because they are turning that weathered wood into paper pulp construction material by chewing it up and mixing it with their saliva to build their papery nest. If you like the wasps and want to support them, don't refinish or stain that wood, or if you do refinish that lumber, maybe provide other weathered wood for them to use like a pile of old aging firewood.

    This is just a suggestion I would like to make,which not only what I have experience d myself but something scientifically proved. Whenever you're out in your Garden, ALWAYS be totally barefoot because our soles love and deserve that freedom. They love to feel various textures of soil between their toes. Apart from n it's very healthy to be barefoot outside. Take for example two plants, one grown inside a pot and tge other grown in Nature. However much you water and use fertilizer, it never looks as healthy as the latter. This is simply because the roots have a limited space to stread and the Nurishment too is the same. The soles of our feet are like the roots of a tree.When you're not barefoot that natural process is obstructed. Our soles are designs to absorb things which are essential to lead a healthy lifestyle. However, use of footwear deprives this process. Apart from that there are a large number of Sensors / Nerve endings on the soles of our feet, which connects from head to toe. When we walk on Sand, Gravel and Tiny Stones /Pebbles,our entire body gets stimulated through these sensors. Once again Footwear deprives this natural process. So, go barefoot always for good health and happy feet and soles

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening Před 10 dny

      I do have an easier time with hot peppers, I thought it was just me! What has helped me is putting the bag over the whole tip of a developing branch (removing leaves so things don't get too crowded), and I'll have like a 30% success rate with that on sweet peppers.

    I'm not far from you in Upstate SC, experiencing the same weather but by accident have collected a decent amount of rainwater in the last couple of weeks, might be worth looking into a more deliberate system for rainwater collection for next year (have a source for 50 gal drums but wife objected to having them in view so I can't use them😉). Your Sweet Potatoes and Peppers are doing better than mine, Sweetcorn was a miss for me this year with tassels almost finished before silks emerged so I'm trying a second planting and hoping the weather holds long enough.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening Před 15 dny

      I've considered rainwater collection, but as I'm a renter, I'm not sure adding gutters to my house would be allowed; I think the landlord left them off very intentionally when he remodeled the house. Either way, I've gotten barely any rain compared to the rest of the area around me. According to my weather station I've only gotten 0.63in of rain in the last 30 days.
