Staying in the city is wild. Owning & renting cost are wild right now but more so in the city. I grew up in the city in the 80's and parents moved the family to the burbs. My perspective is from that of a middle class family. Burbs Pros: - Better schools - More house for your $ more BRs/BA. - Actual outdoor space to entertain (landscaping service is not that much per yr to cut the grass and remove snow if you don't want to do it yourself) and many parks. - Events and nightlife in town or neighboring towns to attend just as lively as the city just less traffic. - Friends and family don't have to park down the street or the next street over when they come to visit. - If you work downtown, relax and take the train. The time on the train is about the same as the time in traffic w/o the stress. - During non-rush hr it only takes 30 min to travel in from NW and SW suburbs 60 miles out from the lake front. City Pros: - Better Night life. - Great for Singles. Cons: Everything about living in a city (the list is near endless) .

You pay for location first. You can't expect to get anything on the beach of San Diego for that money. And you can buy a mansion in Wyoming where there's more cows then people and its snowing 8 months of the year. Also if location has high paying jobs it will be expansive there too.
