Aram Khachaturian: Waltz from Masquerade Suite (1941)
Masquerade was written in 1941 by Aram Khachaturian as incidental music for a production of the play of the same name by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. It premiered on 21 June 1941 in the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow. The music is better known in the form of a five-movement suite.
Khachaturian was asked to write music for a production of Masquerade being produced by the director Ruben Simonov. The famous waltz theme in particular gave Khachaturian much trouble in its creation: moved by the words of the play’s heroine, Nina - “How beautiful the new waltz is! … something between sorrow and joy gripped my heart.” - the composer struggled to “find a theme that I considered beautiful and new”.
His former teacher, Nikolai Myaskovsky, attempted to help Khachaturian by giving him a collection of romances and waltzes from Lermontov’s time; though these did not give immediate inspiration, Khachaturian admitted that “had it not been for the strenuous search” for the appropriate style and melodic inspiration, he would not have discovered the second theme of his waltz which acted “like a magic link, allowing me to pull out the whole chain. The rest of the waltz came to me easily, with no trouble at all.”
Khachaturian dedicated the waltz to the actress who played Nina, Alla Kazanskaya. Masquerade was the last production staged by the theatre before the invasion of the USSR by Germany, and the production run was cut short.

Underappreciated compared to his other symphonies. A wonderful and original work somewhat unlike his others.

This piece of music shows Beethoven at his best. So underrated, just like his the creatures of prometheus. Two magnificent composition's. When I first heard this many years ago, I instantly fell in love with it. It's funny that composer's today can't compose music as beautiful as this. At least very few can. This modern style of classical music is, to me just awful to listen to. That being said, I want to thank you so much for uploading this outstanding recording.
A lot of interesting dissonances and key changes in the final movement.

Seems to me that Rachmaninoff clearly quotes two passages of this symphony in his Symphony no. 2 (incidentally, dedicated to Tanayev) 30:26 (This idea features prominently as a motif in Rachmaninoff's finale) 37:38 (These interlocked descending scales are used similarly in the Scherzo, and the brass chorale theme is similar as well)
Wow, didn't know. Thanks

The other symphonies weren't published during Taneyev's life.
Interesting choice to only notate 3 flats in the key signature for E-flat minor
It's a theme with a couple composers. Not one I particularly respect, but I've seen it elsewhere. Or A-flat minor notated with four flats, for example.
I've just looked again, and he notates four flats for the clarinet's transposing F minor. Just interesting
