I have a friend who imports some US tails through his shop, and luckily I get access to them but the amount of bucktails he can buy is really limited so it is not fair, to be honest. But I buy what I can to create my own flies

    Great tie and subject. I'm amazed how seldom see crayfish flies. IMO, crayfish are a major food source for trout and other stream predators. Anything from a 1/2'' hatchling to a 3'' mini lobster is a meal for a trout.

      Thank you! You can buy them everywhere really. I bought these exact ones at my local fly shop but Hareline makes em, if you want bigger Spawn makes a 6.3mm, 6.4 gets rly tricky because a lot of those beads have small holes. Brands like Traper, Hendz, Hanak will all have 5.5mm. Traper has some crazy 7mm aswell 😬

    Awesome fly. What is the difference in using Dubbin to say Bucktail? I am new to this, I just got a vise this past xmas.

    • @odmflies
      @odmflies Před 7 měsíci

      You can use ducktail too. But you would have to cut the bucktail really short so it doesn't impede the tails for freely move. So you would waste a lot. I like dubbing, cheap, fast, easy to tie and makes a clean head with the eyes.Also if you don't use heavy tungsten beads the ducktail will also change the action and the sink rate of the fly with these tails. You can experiment with anything tho. You can use just regular chenille for the body. Have fun with it!

      Gday from Australia mate. Rattling jigs is something we both seem to share the ideas with except we do not have the same fish species as you do. I do the same thing with my rattles by cutting off that little T section. Then i position my rattle on the back of the hook shank. Now unlike you I use shrink wrap to hold my rattle into place then thread wrap over the main body but leave the ends exposed. I too also use Zap a Gap waterproof super glue over the thread. Now i can use bucktail like you do which i do sometimes but i really like using rabbit fur zonkers in two tone colours with dyed stripes from hareline. I position the strips either side of the rattle and wrap it in. Then i will dress it off in bucktail and krystal flash. Then i will wrap a U.V. chenille around the neck and make sure all your fibres are brushed backwards over the whole body. I also do the same thing with rattle and hook but then i do a 3 feather marabou rap using my hackle pliers. I wind the feathers over the rattle body towards the jighead. Then i tie it off. Now i make my heads and for these jigs i designed my own underspin jig head which i powdercoat. Now unlike everyone else I do not have my blade swivel protuding from the head. Instead i use a do-it figure 8 insert then attach my split ring to that. So with that in mind i make my neck finish in a bare wrap normally in red then use Loon hard head in clear. This gives the blade room to move unimpeded . I am not on instagram or Facebook any longer. I however have a email address and love watching U-tube and other jig tyers at work. Best Regards B.J. B.J.sCustom Baits Australia.

    • @odmflies
      @odmflies Před 7 měsíci

      Hey! Thank you. I tie them on jig hook to fish a long the bottom and reduce snags and also because I fish them euro nymph style on heavy current rivers for bass and walleye. Spawn fly fish makes a 6.3mm slotted bead. I tie them in a 5.5, 6.4 or 7mm bead. It hard to find decent beads with big enough holes for bigger hooks. ''Trapper'' makes the best beads up to 7mm which is crazy big! Its a Polish brand

      Oh yea!! I tie a smaller version especially for bass and walleye. It's called the wiggle jig it's a couple videos back. I go from 4/0 all the way down to size 8

    Great tutorial. Ive had some issues (ok, total failures) getting the larger sized tubing secured on to hook shanks. It would spin or slide. Your technique of putting a small piece of foam under the tubing looks the the answer to that problem. Thanks.

      Yes it's a good technique so when u tie the tubing down it has something to rest on and not spin on the shank! I tie tubing up to 20mm with that technique. Way bigger then the chockletts that only goes up to 12mm
