Inside the light-filled rural hideaway of legendary artists Langlands & Bell
For the second film in our series, Homing In, our co-founder, Matt Gibberd, journeys to rural Kent to explore the theme of light with artist duo Ben Langlands and Nikki Bell in their luminous, self-built eco-home. As with each of the films in the series, we aim to show how adherence to five key design principles - space, light, materials, nature and decoration - allows you, in Matt’s words, “to live a better and more fulfilled life.”
In Ben and Nikki's home, light shines brightest. In fact, the space has been designed to facilitate their daily migrations and the changing light that moves with them throughout the house. And as artists, they know precisely what kind of light they want to usher into their home and how to achieve the desired level of illumination at any given hour of the day.

The gentle nature of Ben and Nikki while guiding us through this purely beautiful home was very moving to me. And yes 'relationship' was a theme: the soft hues of the gentle landscape uninterrupted by Untitled white walls, mutual enhancement of interior, exterior and natural landscape all around, all flowing together.
This is my dream house, hands down: architecture, design, furniture. Actually I don't think I could have dreamt of something better.

Modernist houses are fab. So many times I've admired period houses, but when I've seen the interior I'm underwhelmed. Often a house that looks amazing from the outside is not so great on the inside, whereas the boxy, 'ugly' modern houses were built to be awesome on the inside: Symmetrical rooms, logical layout and optimising natural light. Love their love of colour, it's so cheering!

In almost all cases, there is nothing more green than keeping/restoring the old and nothing less green than filling a landfill with discarded materials and replacing them with something that has travelled 10,000 miles. I really like the house in this video.

Really love how they let the exterior wood get washed out so it fits into its context. Newer houses can at times look out of place in the country, but this fits seemlessly, like an ode to the old shack they demolished.
Would love to hear Julia's life story, she seems to have lived an incredible life.
