Nice to see this work being done. I hope they "unstraighten" some of those waterways and get some wetlands back as soon as possible. There's an Australian man doing amazing work in previously drought vulnerable land by undoing the straightening that was done by early European settlers who were ignorant of land management outside Europe. Stunning to realise how important the natural course of streams and rivers are to the environment. Very interesting doco on CZcams by the ABC - Natural sequence farming: How Peter Andrews rejuvenates drought- struck land | Australian Story

A familiar and reassuring sight on tracks across Aotearoa, these markers have been keeping walkers, cyclists and trampers on track for decades. Orange triangles indicate an official track. You’ll find them attached to trees, spaced out so that you should always be able to see the location of the next one. Above the bushline, marker poles or cairns may be used instead. If you come across other coloured markers or ribbons on your walk, don’t follow them! These indicate biodiversity work areas such as predator trap lines, not walking tracks. Always be on the lookout for the next track marker - and regularly check your map when exploring the outdoors 🧡

With everyone obsessed with getting 10-20K steps per day, they get burned out trying to bang it all out in really long walks. While there's nothing wrong with long walks, it's better to do more short walks over the whole day to stay more generally active. Anyone can do a 15 min walk and if you're doing a 3-4mph pace that's 1500-2000 steps. Repeating a 15 min walk every few hrs adds up to a ton of steps overall. Versus telling someone to walk 5-10 miles.

This video is so awesome!! I never thought I would get to see a Kiwi in its wild habitat. The last time I was in Christchurch, I visited a wildlife sanctuary that had Kiwis in a nocturnal environment , and that was a joy to see and hear them. After my eyes adjusted to the black lighting, I could see a pair of them preening with a barely audible squeaking noise. It was a very memorable experience. Thank you for posting this wonderful video. I hope to be as lucky one day.

The avocado (Persea americana) is a medium-sized, evergreen tree in the laurel family (Lauraceae). It is native to the Americas and was first domesticated in Mesoamerica more than 5,000 years ago. Then as now it was prized for its large and unusually oily fruit.[3] The tree likely originated in the highlands bridging south-central Mexico and Guatemala.[4][5][6] Its fruit, sometimes also referred to as an alligator pear or avocado pear, is botanically a large berry containing a single large seed.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not a chill, casual day walk. It’s a 7-8hour, 20.2km hike through steep and strenuous alpine terrain. It’s a big day and not to be underestimated. What tips would you add? 🥾 Practise walking for long periods. Start with short walks and build up to longer ones with more elevation. ⛰️ Walk up and down LOTS of hills. On the crossing you’ll be steeply climbing 750m to the highest point, and descending over 1,000m. 🚴🏼 Swap out your morning bus commute with a leg-powered one, like walking or cycling. 𓊍 Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Make it fun and race your elevator dwelling work mates to your floor. 🦵Always do leg day - build up your muscle strength. Trust us, your knees will thank you. ⚖️ Practise balancing exercises, like standing on one leg with your eyes closed. Ankle rolls are very common on the crossing! 👐 Bought some shiny new walking poles? Test them out - it's kind of like having an extra pair of limbs and takes some getting used to.
