I was lucky enough to see the band with this lineup (and a few more minus Matt) 7 or 8 times in this period (‘90-‘93). Hands down most consistently mind-blowing ensemble I ever got to see, playing venues that held 300-500. It’s really rare to get to see a band that good up close like that. It seriously reset my head. luckily, they came through Oxford, Memphis, and Jackson close to me, just happened to be in the right place at the right time…
Carroll best from haywood County North Carolina was playing this style in the 40s he learned it from his grandmother.

Interresting statement his brother gave about the Beatles an banjo. The real reason they didnt use the banjo was because the went to India for spiritual experience and ended up loving the cithar.

The timing is amazing.
I bought this when it came and learned most of the songs. It was one of the most influential recordings I’ve ever had. So much soul and variety played by masters of the music.

OK, I had recently learnt Old Joe Clark, Shorting Bread, Cluck Old Hen, Groundhog, by ear.... and was feeling pretty good about it. Then stumbled upon this page, and this level of banjo is a horse of another color entirely. Where would I find Tablature for Sligo Maid - Ken Perlman? I'll learn to read it if I can learn to play something like that.
They sold a tab book for this record along side it. I have a reprint of the book coming, if you want i can send you a picture of that song
