Glad that hi-nose 30 has been preserved. We had a former Southern hi-nose 30, 2572, on our line in 1992. She was short nose forward without duel controls. Good unit, probably razor blades now. Curious about the ex-NKP 30, 2907, shown in this video if she survived. I believe 900 is at the NKP Museum in Bellevue. I saw 2904, its cab anyway, at Pilot Brothers in Chicago in 1992. Also 2901, either at Pilot Brothers or the dead line in Bellevue awaiting dispo.

It's a shame when you realize how much railroad history has been taken from Roanoke. NS has moved the headquarters and most of the maintenance to other locations. The buildings that were "the Roanoke Shops" are gone. When you consider all the railroad history that Roanoke was a part of. And Roanoke had it all there in the city limits. Not much remains. My first trip to Roanoke was in 1982. As a young rail fan, the big sign that stood tall on top of the shop roof clearly indicated the location of the N&W rail shops. That sign still stands out in my mind. It was lit-up at night in red. It appeared to be as bright as a neon sign. I sure hope that sign was saved from demolition when the buildings were tore down. Does anyone know what happened to that sign?

@roanokenrhs I would love to see a full uncut version of the cab ride in 611 going to Fort Wayne and as well going up the old fort loops in 1994. Thought it could be a fun thing to watch, there aren’t many cab ride video footage of 611 in the 1990s so it could be really cool to see.

The Rail-hauled waste Solution reminds me of Bay Colony RR'S use of repurposed Boxcars to haul trash from Cape Cod to "SEMASS" an Incinerator/Boiler that "nominally" Generated Electricity as well. Bay Colony's cars were much the same, the loading and tipping of the cars the same too. It started in 1989.

If you’re talking about the whistle the 611 wore from 1991 to 1994, Preston Claytor owns it and removed both it and himself from the 611 group when the Spirit of Roanoke moniker was applied buying the 2014-2015 re-restoration, for the stated reason that the N&W never named its engines. Nothing but overzealous and petty purism if you ask me. I would state why I view that move as petty, but I’d rather not make this comment overly long.
