Happy World Sea Turtle Day!
This time we are in Dalyan, Turkey and the Video is more a Documentary than a Vlog.
During our time in Turkey we red about the Dalyan Delta and what an important and amazing habitat it is. We went there without much preparation and tried to explore on our own. What we found is a town with the classical Turkish hospitality that we respect and enjoy a lot.
We also learned about the Story of Itzuzu Beach, and how many locals, also famous Environmentalist June Haimoff, known as Kaptan June, fought for this Beach and its sea turtles, as it is one of the most important nesting sites of the whole Mediterranean.
We visited Turkeys only Turtle Hospital which is located next to the Beach, DEKAMER.
And we also found out about how tourism is both, curse and blessing.
While doing research for this video I came across a couple of interesting people who helped me get footage for the video together. Here are the links to their CZcams Channels, please check them out and leave a like and subscription as well.

Thank you, you too 😘🥰

I haven't watched your survival guide yet, but I really appreciated how you resisted romanticizing your pilgrimage and how you presented it in such a realistic, "warts and all" way. It really gives me a good idea what to expect when I do this part of the Via Francigena. I have always found Italy to be a country where you turn one corner and are confronted by unspeakable beauty, then turn another and there's unspeakable ugliness waiting for you! The only thing I would add is that I'm originally from a country where unspoiled nature is very easy to access (NZ) and so when it comes to Europe I'm more interested in the human footprint (not the trash and traffic!) but the history, the art and architecture, the food and the wine etc. I'll look elsewhere for tips on that, but thanks for these three really enlightening videos. ps. It was brave of you to do it from December to January because I've been in Tuscany at that time of the year and it can be absolutely freezing! Still, you had the trail to yourselves...
Hey Christopher! Thanks for your comment! And thanks for watching the videos i really appreciate it! Yeah it is definitly a way for people who love history and Ancient buildings. Towns like Lucca or San Gimignano are just amazing. As you said, the food, it is just amazing. I am lucky to taste great food on all my journeys but Italian cuisine is just special. We were quite lucky with the weather. It was mild, nearly no days below 0 degrees and also not much rain, unlike nearly all our other long distance trails 🤣 Enjoy your Via Francigena! And all the best!
What was the weight of your back pack?
Hey John! Did not weight it but mine Was around 10-12kg, also depending on food and water. Keep in mind, we did the hike during a longer journey, so definitly there have been a bunch of stuff we did not use or did not need. I think if you always sleep inside and plan only for the journey, and do it during a warm peruod, it should be possible to get down to 6-8kg. Depending on Personal needs and Equipment of course. Greetings
@@strawanza2502 Thanks for your reply. I will be travelling alone and plan to stay inside, hopefully sometime next year. This might seem like a silly question but I only recently found out that Italy has wolfs and bears. Did you carry bear spray or do you know whether others that walk the Via francigena carry bear spray?
@@johnwheeler3071 thats no silly question at all. Which part of the VF are you going to walk? If you only walk Lucca to Rome, don't worry at all. No bears in that area. Wolfs are no danger to humans at all, so don't worry about them. Bears can be präsentiert on the Alps. Maybe carry bearspray. However, the chance to spot and especially being attacked by wildlife(in this case bears) is very Low. Anyway, there are a bunch of shepherd and/or stray dogs that sometimes get quite close. Usually they only bark but yeah...not too much fun. In my opinion the chance of meeting aggressive dogs is higher then meeting bears.
@@strawanza2502 I want to start in Montigny Switzerland so I can go up and over the alps. I believe there are also lynx in the alps but I think they are shy of humans. I think I'm right in saying the earliest I would be able to start is at end of June if I want to use the track and not the road. It is possible I change my mind and start in Aosta as its lower and I might be able to start earlier. I understand the rice fields in Piedamont are not the most exciting part of the journey and it also has lots of mosquitos which won't be fun. It might be better in Piedamont though wetter in May as there might not be so many mosquitos as in the summer. As you can see I'm trying to weigh it up.
@@johnwheeler3071 I See, yeah that sounds like a great idea, I actually would love to do the alps part of the trail as well one day. Lynx, as you said, are absolutely harmless and seeing one in the wild is very rare. Like I said, I think Dogs and also Cows, especially when they have young ones to protect, are a much bigger threat then wildlife. I would love to give you some information to make your decision easier on where to start, but to be honest I have no idea about this part of the trail so I will pass on that. 😅

Hi, nice video, very informative. May I ask, how did you travel via the island? E.g. if I take flight to Larnaka, is there some bus to Girne? I cannot find anything on websites.
Hey! Thanks for your comment! Well, that is a good question. The public transport is not great but it is also not too hard to get around, at least to major cities/towns. Keep in mind that North Cyprus (Girne/Kyrenia) and the Republic of Cyprus (Larnaka) are divided and crossing the border could become a problem. I didn't do it myself but I heard many totally different stories about this topic. From no problem at all to being rejected at the border. I think it really depends on the officer you meet at the checkpoint and maybe even which passport you have. However, there is an Airport in North Cyprus. Ercan Airport, just next to Nikosia/Lefkosa. From there you can catch busses or minibuses to Kyrenia without any problem. If I saw it right, Ercan Airport is only reachable from Istanbul and Izmir at the moment. So, wherever you come from, you would probably need to make a stopover to reach this one. I just read about it and probably the classical way from Larnaka is to catch a Bus to Nikosia, cross the border by foot and then take another Bus from the northern side of Nikosia to Girne. Hope I could help you, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask =) Greetings www.ercanairport.net/flight-information/ cyprus-faq.com/en/north/aeroport/kak-iz-aeroporta-larnaki-samostoyatelno-dobratsya-do-girne/

Wow!! This is amazing!!
Finally got to see your video after being swamped in ice hockey championship for the last 2 weeks :D I really enjoyed the outstanding views of the coastline, it's just sad to see that people are able to leave so much trash in such a beautiful nature. And thanks for all the interesting info about turtles!!
Thanks Bro. Yeah it was an amazing trail...maybe the best I did. Gotta finally watch your Albania video soon 😅
❤
You mention that you do not care for crowded areas and you prefer nature. Me too! Have you walked the Via de Francesco? I would love to see any video reviews on that pilgrimage. Thank you!
Hey! No we haven't done that one. I am not sure if there is a Pilgrimage in northern Italy where you avoid crowded places, or walking along streets. I think that the Southern part of via Francigena or cammino Materano could be less crowded, but I can't guarantee on that. EDIT: Also the Magna Via Francigena in Sicily seems a bit more natural path. Also there are many more Long Distance trails in Italy (no pilgrimages though). I think the Via Alta Liguria for example. Or if you are looking for a short one, check our video about the Grande Traversata Elbana. czcams.com/video/AXCgonkpy6o/video.html
Thanks for this video! I am hoping to run this in 1 day. A few questions: What time of year did you do it? How did you buy a bus ticket? Why did you decide to start Pomonte instead of Patresi, or start in Cavo? Where did you re-fill water?
Hey Melissa thanks for your comment! Answers to your questions: 1. We walked it in the first week of March 2023. 2. The Bus Ticket you buy like everywhere in Italy in the local tabbacco Shop or other similar facility, just ask locals :) 3. We decide to start in Pomonte cause we already knew the Patresi path from our hikes around the area. We stayed on Elba for 2 months Volunteering not far from Patresi. Thats also why we wanted to finish in Cavo, as it was our way off the Island. 4. For water refill it is important to go to the towns along the way. There is only one refill directly on trail, Walters shelter as you can see in the video. If you walk the original route you go through Procchio and Porto Azzuro. There you can refill if the fountains are working or buy water. If you have any other questions feel free to ask :) all the best!
Amazing! Thank you very much for your quick and clear response. I will have to check out your other adventures on your channel. Grazie!

dogs are the only thing holding me back from this one
I understand your concerns but I think this trail is way to beautiful and amazing to holding you back just by dogs. 99% of them are friendly, it was just one encounter we had. I actually read it more often that some people have problems with dogs while hiking this path, but I really think that is not such a big problem to skip this amazing path. I think it is good that when you meet people, talk to them, especially when they come from the other direction, if they had some encounters (also ask about the water situation, always good to know), take hiking poles with you, they are helpful when dogs get too close and when you come close to a farm, already pick up a stone or two. It is not great that one has to be so careful hiking this trail, but still, the Lycian Way is such a great adventure would be sad to miss it just cause of this. =) greetings!
