    So helpful I’ve been torn between following classical homeschooling and charlotte mason homeschooling and I really appreciate your experience and being able to see where the classical model would be better like you said with writing right and with memorizing:) I think charlotte mason has a romance to it , it seems so lovely but I definitely lean toward the classical for the rigorous academic and the memorizing in the young years when they’re inclined to do so … it just seems a waste to not take advantage of that ability.. but I have definitely added more living books and made a point to recognize it .. and the concept of limiting twaddle makes a lot of sense. :) thanks for sharing ❤😇🫶

    I have beautiful Shakespeare for children too but it’s a bit over my son’s head, he’s 5, do you know a simpler version or maybe just wait until he’s older?

    • @littlebitsofbliss
      @littlebitsofbliss Před dnem

      My preference is to read it to them, even if it’s a little over their heads. You can go over a few of the more difficult vocabulary words first, and even narrate to them what the story was about afterwards. But I totally understand your frustration! There are simpler Shakespeare adaptations, but I have not tried any yet to make any recommendations. I have seen some picture books on Amazon, etc. Alternatively, if you feel he’s not gaining anything from reading it, I would just wait until he’s older! 😊

They have audible and that is limited and an audio program for the blind, but not find many that they can read so I do not have too.

    • @littlebitsofbliss
      @littlebitsofbliss Před 6 dny

      I’ve recorded a response video to answer your previous and similar questions and it’s scheduled for July 3rd. But briefly to give you some direction until then: 1. You don’t have to pre-read everything in order to know if her narrations are correct. Do your lesson plans/guides give you a brief synopsis about what the books are about? 2. What subjects are you getting her to read independently? I would start out with one subject independently at first (maybe literature) and gradually add more as she learns to take on the added responsibility. Grade 4 is young, but they can begin some independent work. In the Alveary, many of the grade 4 subjects are not to be completely independent. 3. Audio books, and online summaries and synopsis are helpful (ex: Sparknotes) or other free online sources. 4. Independent reading and narrations are also improved by skimming through that days/weeks reading and jot down all the potentially tricky vocabulary words. You could get her to look them up (or you can write them out beforehand) and she can use that word list to help her through the passage. Pre-reading is the gold standard but many of us (including me) can’t pre-read everything. I try to focus only on subjects I know nothing about. I hope that helps. I try to go into a little more detail in the video!

This is the first year trying CM. I like how you combine it with classical ( which I do not know much about each of those). The dad adds to the lessons. I also help them with other things . I do not know much about science or history. Do you read everything before they do? I know she should be reading some things independently and just wondering how to know if narrations are correct when she does it independently. I am usually gone all day to their house. I am choosing not to be overwhelmed, but it seems to creeping in. Any tips? How long does it take you to get everything done in the day? Will you share a link for BOC, Story of the World, and M.B. But to start, I highly recommend the book called “The Well-Trained Mind, A Guide to Classical Education at Home” by Susan Wise Bauer. She gives detailed tips on how to teach each subject in with a classical approach. I think you could still use AGF and apply a few classical concepts! Don’t stress about it! I've been homeschooling for over 20 years. (CM for appx 5-6 of those years.) I have found that even though I KNOW we don't have to do/read/accomplish everything, I still battle with those nagging things. The pressure we put on ourselves as homeschool moms is real, and I think that we still tend to feel like we can't just rest in the learning, even when we are utilizing a solid curriculum, good resources, and wonderful, living books I, for one, need to pray and trust the Lord in order to keep the balance and peace between times to linger and times to press on. Thank you so much for sharing this curriculum. I had never heard of it, but I took a look at it and it does look extremely well thought-out. I am considering purchasing this for my family for our upcoming school year. I can't think of a better investment than the one that blesses our families with peace. If it's a good resource, I am definitely going to recommend it to others!!

    Have you done any research into Teaching Textbooks? It’s another I’ve seen recommended a lot. We just finished up Math with Confidence K but it does bother me that it won’t take us through high school.

    • @littlebitsofbliss
      @littlebitsofbliss Před 14 dny

      Yes I have. I find Teaching Textbooks works well for some children, probably those children who are more “naturally” good at math. But because it’s so hands off, it’s possible for children to appear like they are understanding and progressing through the levels, and not really comprehending the concepts. For me, sticking with one curriculum up to high school, is about finding a way of teaching math that our children can understand and thrive in. Having taken upper level math courses, including university calculus, how it’s taught, and the right quantity of time and practice with the concepts is everything! I think Math with Confidence is excellent! But not all curriculum teach, review, and master math concepts well. So it can be hard when it comes time to switch.

    I have a question about Beauty and Truth, do you read and prep beforehand? How long does it take? How much manipulatives do you use during the lessons?

    • @littlebitsofbliss
      @littlebitsofbliss Před 14 dny

      The only prep I had to do was gathering materials for the lesson, no other pre-reading was required and they list all the required materials at the top of each lesson. The lessons are short… for grade 4 it only took 15-20 minutes max. The manipulatives are very basic and few. Most of them are “made” by the student, like cutting a paper into 1/4’s, etc. I hope that helps!

    You use so many different resources. Do you feel like even with all of these extras that the cost of the Alveary is worth it? We are doing the Alveary again this year 🎉 but my rising 5th is not doing great with MCT Grammar Island. He loves it but said he never feels like he has time to master things so I am looking for something else for him. I also feel like there is already so much with the Alveary that there isn't room to add in extras. I am still trying to figure all of this out.

      I love so many of the Alveary’s resources that I definitely think it’s worth it! I love their book selections, and putting those together with their detailed guides would be a lot of work for me! I definitely prefer FLL though! It is very detailed and definitely leads to mastery! 😊

    And Mr Demme is fantastic. My kids started MUS with Primer. My 8th grader went with me to a homeschool convention and he was there. My son waited to speak to him at his booth. He saw my son waiting, cut his conversation short and hustled over to my son. He warmly greeted my child and talked to him about school and his interests. He asked my son his age, when he said "14," Mr Demme said, "Noooo, you're..." And my son laughed and answered "Onety-four!" Then he wrote a note to my son in his newest book and gave it to him. He really is just a lovely man.

    Love the choices. It sounds like a lot though, can you go into how you fit everything into your daily schedule, how long it takes to get through subjects,etc. I school 3 kids (4th coming up to school age soon) and it find it hard to do enough subjects with the time I have.

    • @littlebitsofbliss

      I am posting a video about that next week! I probably wouldn’t do all these subjects with more children than 2… for example, I’d probably only do one history option rather than also include Canadian history. I have been doing Charlotte Mason homeschooling for a few years now and, as my child gets older, I do feel like so much of what you shared is applicable.
