Will Our Geodesic Dome Survive A Storm?
Since it's tornado season in the Midwestern US, I figured we should make sure the dome is secure! Last week we put in half the rebar anchors and most of the reinforcing plates, and this weekend we got all but two of the outer plates done. We also did some of the inner ones and drove in twice as much rebar. Hopefully the thing is now secure against normal thunderstorms! It probably still wouldn't stand up to a tornado, but we'll just hope that doesn't happen!

Assembling A Surplus Geodesic Space Dome
zhlédnutí 27KPřed 9 hodinami
Last fall we went up to Carp, Ontario, to pick up a surplus radome! This came from a former NATO satellite facility, which is now used as a radio observatory. While I'm not exactly sure where this particular dome was used, these are frequently found on radar towers, satellite ground station downlinks, and radio telescopes. They provide protection from the weather for delicate antennas and other...
Is Creality's Falcon 2 Pro Laser Engraver Really New And Improved? (A Saveitforparts Review)
zhlédnutí 12KPřed 21 hodinou
Last year I reviewed the original Creality Falcon 40W laser engraver and had a few concerns about it. This year, Creality has a new upgraded version, the Falcon 2 Pro. They've fixed a lot of the issues I had, including a much better enclosure and improved airflow and reliability. The laser is very powerful and fast, I was able to do most of my engraving and cutting projects in under an hour per...
Automated Weather Satellite Ground Station (Mostly Made From Trash)
zhlédnutí 25KPřed dnem
I've just finished a major upgrade to my DIY satellite ground station. This involves a larger (7ft diameter) dish for geostationary GOES-East. I also moved my QFH antenna that receives Polar-Orbiting NOAA and Meteor satellites on VHF frequencies. This project had some ups and downs, as do most of my builds! I'm using as much second-hand and free equipment as possible to keep costs low. The big ...

Mid-Size TV Dish Modified For Geostationary Weather Satellites
zhlédnutí 12KPřed 21 dnem
People often ask if they can do anything with a modern TV dish, the small kind with the offset feed that you find on may rooftops these days. While most of these are too small to do much beyond commercial television, the slightly larger ones are a little more capable. I recently got ahold of a ~40" Channel Master dish, and swapped out the Ku Band LNB for a cheap L-band feed antenna. This lets m...
Small TV Dish Modified For HRPT Weather Satellites - Trash Antenna Build w Beer Cans & Duct Tape!
zhlédnutí 22KPřed 21 dnem
Since folks keep asking what they can do with their little rooftop TV dish, I figured I'd better do a video with one! This is actually a little smaller than most, it's designed to be a portable, fold-up satellite antenna for use on the go. I modified it for use in the microwave L-band (~1.7ghz), using some scrap wire and pipe, a beer can, duct tape, zipties, and hot glue! I'm using a Software D...
Human-Powered Generator For Off-Grid Electricity - British Military Surplus Radio Power System
zhlédnutí 60KPřed měsícem
This is a 1953 Pedal Generator, British Army surplus. I found it at a local estate sale and just had to hoard it! The thing still works, and I was able to charge up a small 12v battery with it. The entire unit folds up into a backpack, and is surprisingly easy to carry around and to use. While I wouldn't want to pedal it all day it does juice up batteries as well as giving me a workout! This mi...
Failing (Again) To Make Honeywell Tablet Useful
zhlédnutí 28KPřed měsícem
To follow up on Part 1 of this project, I finally got an operating system onto my Honewell Thor tablet! Unfortunatley, that OS is Windows CE, one of the least useful or effective operating systems ever made. It also appears to be a RAMdisk type of operating system, so any user changes vanish if the thing reboots or the power is lost! Overall this isn't a very exciting video, it's just me failin...
Kaiweets KTI-KO1 Thermal Camera Review
zhlédnutí 5KPřed měsícem
The Kaiweets KTI-K01 is a pretty basic handheld thermal camera, offering simple controls and a straightforward interface. It has a nice large screen and comes with a rugged carrying case. Unfortunately, the camera lacks a video mode. While it does have Wifi, it can't stream real-time video to an app or computer. This is an OK basic camera for anyone who just needs to take thermal infrared photo...
Is An Old Honeywell Tablet Useful For Anything?
zhlédnutí 14KPřed měsícem
I picked up a couple Honeywell Thor VM1 industrial computers 2nd-hand. After a couple weeks of screwing around with them, the only thing I can get to work is Doom! I haven't been able to get a real OS onto it or run much other software successfully. These seem to be one of those proprietary overpriced gadgets designed to go in a landfill as soon as they're past their original use. If anyone has...
Surplus Metascope Infrared Viewer - US Navy Signal Device
zhlédnutí 15KPřed měsícem
I picked this thing up really cheap, thinking it was a morse code flasher light. It turns out it's something a little more rare, a "Metascope" from the US Navy. It used a light-charged phosphor screen and mirror system to detect infrared lights for night-time signaling. While the phosphor is sadly too decayed for it to function any more, it's a really cool piece of vintage tech! I had no idea t...
I Got An Oscilloscope! Now What Do I Do With It?
zhlédnutí 14KPřed měsícem
I've heard about these new-fangled Oscilloscope things for a while, so I finally bought one... from 1946! This is about the smallest, simplest, and cheapest scope I've ever seen, so I figured it'd be a good starter for someone like me who has never touched one before! This is a Philco Junior Scope. It uses vacuum tubes, has a tiny CRT display, and only has 7 controls. I was able to do a couple ...

@2:46 - I think the family of jumping spiders are some of the friendliest, most curious arachnids on the planet. I also understand that they're smart and some posit even trainable.
2:21 HMMMM maybe some hydroponics experiments along with radio astronomy, gotta figure out how to feed all of us hungry colonists on Saveitforpartsville asteroid colony. Bring your duct tape!
greetings from a fellow super nerd in central MN! love all your projects, very inspiring. im soon making a metal-mesh-screen umbrella - fold-up dish antenna for my USB-wifi stick, or my cell phone to get better signal up north forest camping :D
Not sure if it's too late to ask this, but where do you find places to pick this kind of stuff up?
Use maths to glom the partial dome onto the full dome.
Can we get that storm video? I assure you I have nothing better to do than watch hours of a storm hitting a geodesic dome in some guy's yard
I just scored fd91 and fd200! Really excited! I remember 90s sooooo fondly and I cannot wait to get that ccd picture "quality" again. Not a lot of info on these 2 models but that's all I could find online where I live. Was looking for fd5 but it's impossible to find
A TV with local channel reception is good to have as another information source during emergencies. I have a TV that is primarily used with a streaming box, but it is hooked up to an antenna and I run a channel rescan every couple months.
Space is fake.
Yes it is
Hey, does anyone know how I can connect my UV-5R to the PC to listen to it through satdump instead of its speaker? Do I need the data cable or a headphone jack adapter or something else entirely?
That's such a cool place, especially with the mine nearby! Maybe you could build a compound there when the world ends. ;)
Pickup hardware at Tractor Supply - they're sold by the pound
OMG, I had one of these! This was my first digital camera!
Turn the left over parts into a satellite dish but on the ground like a mini arecibo with a moveable feed horn for some aiming
Build a dish with the spare panels!
Very cool.
Letsgoo 200K subs !!! 😀😀😀
A partial dome might look neat dressed up as the second Death Star.
For the extra parts, maybe make a parabolic with a microphone aimed at 35 deg south east.. or the sun, and see if it picks up a weird sound
Old air tools may be helpful down there for lasting long.
I love this silly ray dome lol keep up the hard work!
For the leftover parts, may I suggest a mini IMAX cinema?
The storms over Memorial Day weekend were something else. I was on the other side of Lake Michigan when they hit, so I got to watch them roll in over the lake. The whole cabin was shaking.
if you don't prevent critters getting in there, before you know it, it'll be filled to the brim with acorns.
I’d build a half dome open air sleeping quarter with a mosquito net roof. Alternatively, an open air workshop
Make a giant satellite dish with the extra bits, duh!
I'm hoping it survives. I'm looking forward to what you get up to inside. :)
Hell yeah, welcome to the Pleasuredome Gabe! 🍹👙
Shortly after 6 minutes in, he says you need an Internet connection to find the next satellite pass and process the image. Um, excuse me, but if I have an Internet connection, I can just use the publicly available, already processed and often enhanced satellite images. Yes, there are commercial images from private companies in addition to the free ones (which we actually paid for in our taxes), but those commercial satellite down links are likely encrypted anyway. Yes - this is cool as an experiment, or to perhaps impress unaware friends, but as a practical matter, I’ll go for the free, already processed images every time.
You can also download upcoming passes from the GOES satellite, so theoretically you don't need internet once you have the right antennas and processing software.
Love from England
So, it’s not an ac suit. It’s an inflatable suit. You could’ve just got inside an inflatable costume. That runs off a a blower the size of small book. You made it worse. Don’t call something an ac suit if it’s not. that temp difference was temporary. A few minutes the inside that suit got hotter than outside ambient. ugh.
What they need to do is build a much stronger geodesic made of much stronger material. Don’t be stupid people. I’m watching you 🧌
Make a greenhouse so u can grow food
Would it be possible to splice the partial dome to the complete one and make a larger enclosure? Two partially overlapping/intersecting domes would also be stronger.
Amazing bunker !
Super Dome erg Mooi
My experience has been its a lot less noisy with the sdr dongle on a short usb extension cable a foot or two long. putting the raspberry pi in its own metal enclosure would help also. I wrapped the extra cable length of the official raspberry pi power supply around a toroidal ferrite core. its all I had, but a snap on ferrite core will work. Plastic rubbing together can pack a serious punch. I used to get zapped pretty regularly handling palettes of new milk jugs. you could also get usb power cables with a ferrite built in. did you save any for parts?
Make a few smaller ones. Maybe line it up the the pyramids. Or use one with it as a dome stop on posts for an awning. Great videos.
THAT IS SO COOOL! How do you even make that????
I have a few videos on this project, I've been modifying old RV satellite antennas to do different stuff.
Looks like the dome passed its _post-install severe weather shakedown test_ with flying colors! 😂
i cant stop imagining the dome rolling across a field like a giant beach ball that got loose on the beach.
Some farmer will be very confused one day...
But, what do ya do in your ~spare~ time? 😆
What's spare time? 😅
Cool
