21st Century Issues: The Dangers of the Internet
In a way, European Studies is all about solving problems. We teach students to look at the big challenges facing Europe and Europeans, as well as their governments, businesses and societies. Sometimes we look at public policy process and sometimes at innovative business solutions and sometimes we bring them together. Whenever possible, we try to do this with creativity. For years, we taught students to promote solutions by learning how to tell a good story and applying that to the making of a viral advocacy video. Sadly, the course we used for this has been phased out, but we will be bringing something similar into our classrooms soon. In the meantime, we enjoy the movies made this year.
This group, one of several that agreed to share their video as an example, looked at the problems of smartphone and internet addiction in a fun format that pays homage to horror movies while talking about something that can, in fact, be very scary in real life.

      Hi. You may want to check out the site www.studyinholland.nl for details on business programmes and more information on the difference between HBO and WO. It’s hard to say what is preferred for jobs because that can vary from job to job. What I do know is that graduates from our programme (European Studies) often pursue a master first, if they want to work in the public sector, while students who want to work in business often seek and find work right after picking up their bachelor.

    Is the three year IB program a lot harder than the four year program? Like is de niveau van the drie jarige programma vergelijkbaar met een WO niveau?

    • @europeanstudiesthuas6248
      @europeanstudiesthuas6248 Před rokem

      We can only really speak to European Studies and not IB, but in general, three-year programmes at THUAS are more challenging because they have to cover everything that's covered in the four-year programme in less time. That usually means extra lectures and assessments and more self-study. When THUAS offers a 4-year and 3-year version of the same programme, they result in the same exact degree, but follow different routes to get there. We are a university of applied sciences so our focuses are different from a research university and we really can't compare them in terms of level, because to us, it's not a question of level. It's a question of career-oriented education versus theory-oriented education.

    • @europeanstudiesthuas6248
      @europeanstudiesthuas6248 Před rokem

      HI. It's not really a question of what's better. It's a question of what's better for YOU. WO refers to a traditional search university. The approach is usually more academic and theoretical. HBO refers to a university of applied sciences, where approach is more practical and the focus is on career preparation. For example, our European Studies programme is all about preparing for a career advising organisations on European issues, regulations, etc. European Studies also exists at WO, but the focus is more on history, politics, macroeconomics, etc. and not so much on career preparation. If you're looking to study law, you should contact a law programme. We're not experts on that but we do know that HBO law can prepare you for a career as a legal advisor, compliance officer and stuff like that. If you want to be a lawyer, you probably need to go to the Research University, like the UVA in Amsterdam or the University of Leiden.

    • @europeanstudiesthuas6248
      @europeanstudiesthuas6248 Před 2 lety

      Hi. A lot of the students who do a master’s degree choose to do it abroad and often, it’s easier than doing it in the Netherlands. Here in the Netherlands it is common that students from a university of applied sciences are asked to do a premaster programme when going for a master’s at a Dutch university, but in the UK and many other countries, this isn’t necessary. I can’t speak to Germany specifically but our Bachelor of Arts is accepted all over the world.

      @@arcade.101 I don’t think that’s all entirely accurate. In our experience, most premaster programmes are one year and sometimes less - we’ve seen some of our graduates doing a 6-month premaster and there have been cases where the premaster was waved entirely. I haven’t personally ever heard of a graduate doing a 2-year pre-master or of any requirements for finishing you bachelor within 5 years, but entry requirements for individual master’s programmes can vary.

    • @europeanstudiesthuas6248
      @europeanstudiesthuas6248 Před 2 lety

      Hi Laura, In The Netherlands, they make a distinction between types of universities that doesn't always make sense in the rest of the world. The name University is used for traditional institutions that primarily focus on theory and research. This is called Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (Scientific Education or WO) in Dutch. The other type of university is what we are: a university of applied sciences where the focus is on putting theory into practice to prepare for a career. In Dutch, this is called Hoger Beroepsonderijs (Higher Career Education or HBO). I'm afraid I am not knowledgable about the international foundation year. I'm only qualified to talk about our European Studies programme.
