Canadian Pacific 2816 steaming across Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri
As featured in my previous video, CPKC has been operating CP 2816, "the Empress", to Mexico from Canada as part of its Final Spike Steam Train. The second half of my journey following CPKC's Final Spike Steam Train took me through Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri on both rainy and sunny late spring days.

Twice a day, the Montana Rail Link ran round trips between Missoula and Thompson Falls, Montana carrying fuel west on the famed Gas Local trains. In June 2023, I was fortunate enough to catch a few Gas Locals on their runs through Western Montana months before BNSF would take over operations. As the cold winter days transform into warmer spring days, track work season begins on Midwestern railroads. In the spring of 2023, I captured two ballast trains on CPKC tracks in Iowa and Wisconsin. Every September, I would drive from Fort Worth to Raton to see the semaphores. I would actually park my car at Levy for several hours to watch the semaphores. Unlike other types of block signals, the semaphores seemed to have a personality all their own. Hope they stay for a few years longer. 15:12

Thanks! I think most, if not all, of these coal trains are export loads headed to Roberts Bank, BC, making the Montana Rail Link the best way to get coal between the mines in Eastern Montana and Wyoming to the Pacific Northwest.

Low chances of that anymore, apparently metrolink has a new policy saying that engineers can’t blow the horn at night unless it’s an emergency.. 😒
