More great discussion of declinism/doomerism in Amanda Montell's new book "The Age of Magical Overthinking" - definitely recommend

of course you also feel less confident in languages you're less fluent in, but this video assumes equal proficiency

In Brazilian Portuguese dropping the subject is pretty common due to how we conjugate verbs. This is actually one of the most difficult things to overcome when learning English, because we ALWASY drop the subject and the sentences become incoherent

I will also say that function is the term for the parties sororities hold. Yes, old, sexist rules mean that most sororities cannot throw parties in their own house. There are no rules to keep them from renting out literally any off campus space to turn up in. Which is what they do. All the time. My guess is that another part of the fun in using function is that it is a term that used to mean a more refined type of party (because the women were hosting) that has now become the throw-a-rager loophole.

I’m confused- noxious is a real word, that means something is harmful or poisonous, usually used to refer to chemicals. And I thought it wasn’t that uncommon of a word, but you’re referring to it as a fake word, which implies that you and your friends both don’t know the actual meaning of this word??

I dont find any issue with this, the issue with eugenics is that they derive meaning from observations. For instance, saying if you have a large forehead, it correlates with intelligence is be an issue because they're wholly unrelated. Meanwhile I see no issue with saying "i find people with a particular cantile tilt more attractive" the same way i have no issue with someone that would say "Golden retriever boys get me going". Its just more ways we can be specific about what we find attractive ourselves. I think when someone starts a "goth dommy mommies are objectively the most attractive women in earth." thread with 23 posts detailing the scientific literature on the subject, that's no different as the looksmaxxer obsessing over jawlines. Basically that at the end of the day they're giving a very passionate argument as to why they enjoy a particular thing, and that it would be silly to consider it some sort of objective truth.

I'm concerned about pseudoscience and misinformation on social media in general. There's so much of it literally everywhere. It makes me so fucking mad when people just make up a whole bunch of bullshit and kids on social media just eat it up.

I unfortunately keep being reminded of this ignorant-ass video that just straight-up BS's so many modern slangs as originating from 4chan when they demonstrably did not, at all. If the point of this video was to troll as many people into being pissed off by how inaccurate everything said in it all is, congratulations, you're le epic trollz0rs. Even "NPC" was popularized by 4chan but not created by it, at all.

In Spain we also can call someone "Maruja" wich was a pretty popular name during the 50s/60s to describe someone who doesn't have a job and fills their time with gossiping, also you can call "Manolo" someone who's rowdy, masculine, ignorant and sometimes also someone that drinks too much. And when you think about it, that was the gender roles people had in Spain at that time 😂
