    This speech shows why, as much as The Wire gets called the best or most realistic portrayal of police on television, it’s just a higher level and more subtle form of copaganda like dozens of other shows. There is nowhere and no time in the USA where cops have been interested in doing genuine po-lice work, the way this show frames it. Yes, the “war on drugs” made some things worse, but the Baltimore Police Department started out as a nativist, racist white gang occupying and exploiting the residents. It’s just that they didn’t have to make any excuses for it in the past. From a 2022 Baltimore Magazine retrospective on the show: > In the early and mid-1960s, following outrage over police brutality-and a damning two-year investigation by the International Association of Chiefs of Police-the sitting Baltimore police commissioner was ousted. His replacement, Donald Pomerleau, who had consulted on the investigation, described the BPD at the time as “the most corrupt and antiquated in the nation, and had developed almost no positive relationship with the city’s Negro community.” Two decades before, there had been a massive uprising in the city against police brutality after a white officer killed an unarmed Black soldier on leave from Fort Meade, and it wasn’t until the end of the 1950s that the police department began to integrate. > > The corruption and police brutality simply never ended. In 1973, there were at least six different city, state, and federal investigations into the police department. In January of the same year, in a brazen theft that would’ve made the GTTF officers in We Own This City blush, some 1,250 bags of heroin, worth an estimated $100,000, went missing from the Baltimore police department’s evidence control room. (Also in the 1970s, Black officers founded the Vanguard Justice Society, to represent their rights and interests, and help Black officers move up the chain of command.) By 1980, the NAACP had again called for a federal investigation into police brutality, and it wasn’t until 1984 that then-Mayor William Donald Schaefer appointed Bishop Robinson as Baltimore’s first Black police commissioner.

    Hands down the greatest monologue in tv history. It hits on so many layers. The delicate balancing act of police, and the public. Being protectors of citizens, rather than seeming to be an occupying army. Respect, whether it be not needlessly harrassing the public. And in turn the people showing respect, and gratitude to officers who willingly will lay their lives on the line for them. Thats the ideal, anyway. The dialogue is economical, poetic, effective. Its transcendent.

      @jamespiper6659 Před 3 lety

      I largely agree, but I think they're motivations are very different. Bunny Colvin went against the grain to try an find a pragmatic solution. Drugs aren't going away, and an unregulated drug trade yields violence that spills over into the larger community. Problem: arrest stats and criminalizing drug addiction. Solution: sequester the drug trade... Hamsterdam. Where Colvin was working in good faith to improve the community, Jimmy was more reactionary. He wants to solve big cases and stick it to his bosses. He cares about Baltimore, yes, but what really drives him is the chip on his shoulder. He sees Hamsterdam and the significant drop in violent crime and thinks "mmm, I don't know". But Bunny plays him and says the 3 magic words to make him comply: Fuck the bosses. That's all Jimmy really wants.

    I don't know If I am exaggerating or not but in this whole scene ( 0:10 to 0:50) you can see the 3 policemen at the same time who are pushing the boundaries (in this sense, bureaucracy) to make police work. Detective Sydnor ( in the end he visits Judge Phelan in his chambers to apply back-channel pressure in order to advance an investigation, much like McNulty did in Season 1.), McNulty ( you already know what he did) and Major Colvin ( McNulty respects Colvin for his natural attitude towards police work). These 3 characters were sometimes a pain in the ass for their some of their corrupted bosses. Brilliant screen play. Love this show.
