I do lessons on music theory, ranging from simple topics like chords or rhythm to more complex things like how to write music. I also upload songs I've written or songs I like to play.
I have a bachelor's degree in music performance, but I have a fairly low opinion of how music theory is traditionally taught. I think if you strip away a lot of the jargon and old conventions it becomes far easier to understand the ideas behind music.

There's No Such Thing as a Square Wave
Understanding what "square wave" actually means tells us a lot about the way sound waves interact, what a harmonic is, and lays the foundation for harmony.

The Physics of Sound: Frequency, Amplitude, and Wavelength

Music Theory from the *very* beginning: Sound Waves. Planning on doing 3 or 4 of these physics-oriented videos to really ground us in the basics of sound. From there we'll work our way into some of the most fundamental principles of music theory, i.e. why certain pitches played together can sound so different compared to others and why we divide the octave the way we do. Why do we have Sharps and Flats?
zhlédnutí 102KPřed 7 lety
UPDATE: Since there's been some criticism (thoughtful discussion mostly, you guys are great) about the first part of this video I wanted to clarify things: I'm (attempting) to explain why, out of all the different pitches we have, we nearly always use 7. There isn't some physical law that causes it; it's just a very natural and aesthetically pleasing division of the octave. We could use 8, we c...

How to Fit Seventh Chords into a Key

UPDATE: In the key of G minor, that E should have been an Eb. I both said it wrong and wrote it wrong. I'm sorry. Awesome video!
Actually, you can. You just have to think with logarithms.
The cochleae breakdown the square wave to the sine waves?
Love it
Best explanation so far. Thank you so much
NICE!!
Don’t mean to sound flip, but what’s the point of learning these chords? Is it just to compose? How does this help me be a better player? Why would I learn this?
It would also be helpful to have visual references to what notes are being pressed by your fingers 🙏
High Five Micheal 🖐and thank you for user friendly video🙏
I really apprecaite your efforts.
YESSSS! I would love to see more theory videos from you! And I think this format is better too, I've been wishing for you to return for a while now, I'm glad you want to make a new take on all of this
Great explanation of suspended chords
Impressive!!!
Awesome video
Insanely helpful!
Thanks for the video, very interesting. Wouldn't it make more sense to define the mid note of the Sus chord by how much it changes from the third, rather than from the fifth or root? I mean the Sus4 is half a step from the third and the Sus2 a whole step from the third.
I dont feel or sense it at all. Am i cooked?
your wrong C 145 IS CFG NOT CEG CHECK YOUR WORK DUDE

Ok, after 40 years of playong I took a time to watch the circle of 5th's... better late than never. Thanks
Kick butt
Listen to the Interstellar soundtrack. Lots to learn from that. Even songs with no lyrics/vocals by Primus, such as Southbound Pachyderm (minimal vocals).
That was an amazing lesson. Thank you so much!
Never forgetting that Carolyn fondles beads lmao great job and thank you!
The cat also played the keyboard !
In your A-flat major 7 example, doesn't the Circle of Fifths give you the 2nd and 4th note of the cord? The notes of a major cord are always X, X+4 and X+1, where X is the starting note. And for a major 7th cord, the pattern is X, X+4, X+1, X+5.
I can't believe a 9 year old video explained the circle of fifths better than most videos on stream. Thanks a lot!
Bobby McFerrin? spelling? He said something but not as many words to explain....another great example old movies of child actors....they used a fist to play, or an elbow because their little fingers didn't have the spread or reach capability. However, in real time, they had to make the dynamic work. Practice what you know first, the idea.
Or start with C then go every 5 for the sharp keys, then start with F then go every 4 for the flat keys , its that simple.
Michael do you have online music theory courses?
A Flat? I know the album version is in E Flat, does he play the live version in a different key? Thank you strangers of the internet.

I didn’t think I was going to care about this lesson, but I’m glad I watched it because it was awesome 👏

Can you play all triad chords around the circle of fifths.
I would be interested in transition chords. for instance from a 4 to a 1, or a 5 to a 1, thanks enjoy this instruction
What does the "min" really mean? Who has the minor? The F# or the 7th interval or both?
A Csus4 is basically the same as Fsus2, just sayin
i have insomnia and this video is so interesting i fell asleep in ten seconds holy fuck
Gracias por ta buena explicación
*Scales are merely divisions of octaves.* One can see these derived from Ionian: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 :Ionian 1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 7 :Melodic 1 2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 7 :Harmonic and these derived from Mixolydian: 1 2 3 4 5 6 ♭7 :Mixolydian 1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 ♭7 :Dorian 1 2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7 :Aeolian 1 ♭2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7 :Phrygian But in every case, each is merely a division of the octave and thus results in differing intervals. That ♭3 from the tonic in every case renders the minor sound. Psychological moodiness can be induced by increasingly adding flats to change the intervals.
