In Plovdiv I was the only black person for 2 days. It's one of the oldest towns in Europe, so they're not really use to seeing others. But of all my Bulgarian visits, never encountered racism. The people are very kind

The word is a bit different and a lot of people get it confused if u hear the word naturally it's racist but if u hear negar it's nothing bad. We use that word because the other 2 words are not anything u wanna call someone like "chernilka " A chernilka is something that's erm from a chimney so we don't want to use that cause in our language to call someone that is really bad some people may use it if they don't feel comfortable to say the other word but just a heads up😀😃, I hope u enjoy bulgaria and we are very proud that you have found our beautiful country. Ur officially a slav now 😁

It's kind of weird with the n word in Bulgaria because the alternative isn't very good either. That is, if you're referring to the Bulgarian version of it, not the English one. "Black" people just doesn't sound as good in Bulgarian as it does in English. Some people see the Bulgarian version of the n word as a more neutral and respectful word than our word for black, since it doesn't have the same historical negative context that the word "black" does. Kind of the reverse of how it is in English. Not that some people aren't racist, but Bulgaria hasn't had much contact with black people outside of the last 30 years (and you can see even still it's not a lot), so the n word is not something you'd ever hear except for the very rare situation where you'd need to refer to black people. By contrast terms like "black", "blackening", etc. are common and have historically been used to refer to our Ottoman oppressors and the Ottoman yoke (which lasted until the late 1800s), forced religious conversions, cultural suppression, etc. and as an insult and negative connotations in various ways. It never referred to black people or race, but it can still sound negative to a lot of people when you call a black person that. It's actually a bit more complicated since it was also used positively to refer to dark haired/eyed people, but it depends on the context. ANYWAY, there's lots of complicated history in Bulgaria that is very different than Western Europe. Unfortunately a lot of Bulgarians just don't have a good understanding of why people are offended by the n word or the extent of the history behind it, but hopefully that will improve as more black people study and live in Bulgaria and they are more exposed to them. I'm not sure what word should be the politically correct one in Bulgaria though as neither of the two feels right. I hope this didn't come off as disrespectful or anything, I'm not trying to tell you how to feel, just giving a little bit of cultural background that most foreigners don't know. :)
