College Hill Farm is a Homestead/Hobby Farm operated by Joel and Crystal Eldridge. We homestead, garden, can, freeze, store, dehydrate, raise animals, vlog, and write about the homesteading way of life, which is really an Appalachian way of life for hundreds of years. We provide time honored traditional advice from years of experience. We also try new things we have never tried before to see how they work for us. Be certain to visit our channel page at czcams.com/users/collegehillfarm On the page you can see our trailer which details why we are on CZcams. So subscribe and join us on our journey. If you hit the little bell it will notify you when we upload videos. We upload every Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday. Sometimes one or sometimes 5 videos are uploaded depending on what went on on the homestead that week. Feel free to contact us by snail mail at College Hill Farm PO Box 89 Paint Lick, Ky. 40461 You might also catch up with us at Village Fest - In the Historic Village of Paint Lick the first Saturday in October.

      Just follow the bag but add dehydrated tomatoes as many as you want to the water at the beginning. Let them set for an hour. Then cook the rice like on the bag with a little olive oil or butter whichever you prefer. Then when it is done take it off the heat and add about 3-4 ounces of crumbled feta cheese. Stir it in and serve. It is so good. It is the Virgo Yellow Rice.

      @@CollegeHillFarm I know what I'm about to tell you is going to sound crazy but I have predicted hear attacks in several people. Schedule yourself a stress test immediately, why wouldn't you? Think of it logically, your age and weight you should have had one already anyways. I met a guy from working at his house, he was about 70 at the time, him and his wife had just moved to town and I let him put deer stand on my property, as we were working I told him he had heart problems, he scheduled doctors appointment, called afterwards and said, doctors said I'm fine, I said, I don't believe it, see a cardiologist and get a stress test! Couple weeks later he called and said, I always wanted to ride on a helicopter, but not like I did. He had a heart attack and they flew him to a different hospital for surgery. You are not getting enough oxygen and blood flow. Minor work and movement are making you not even being able to talk with sucking for air. Again, what is it going to hurt?

Two small pieces of 2x6 at right angles to vertical post, plus they will hold you at the correct elevation. Not trying to be critical, but you are going to get yourself killed.

    Professional grade black woven ground cover is the only way I will even attempt to garden. I set it up once and leave it over winter. Replant in the same holes. Just make sure to put some good cinder blocks down in addition to stakes. It’s annoying if it comes up. I get teenage boys to lay it out for me. I don’t do well getting down on my knees. When I put in my plants I use a rolling stool. My husband will row crop and use wide rows and go down it with the tiller. That’s fine for him, but I don’t find that kind of thing accessible to me as a woman with small fine hands and delicate wrists. We all got to figure out the way we can get it done!

      @CollegeHillFarm Před 17 dny

      Yes we do. I can't do all that bending over to plant in landscape fabric. It kills my back and legs. Even with a stool. I made me a nice little stool but it hurt so bad to get up off of it it just wasn't worth it to me.

    I have gardened in 3 states, TX, GA & AL. In the last 2, I've tried the Back to Eden style gardening. I found it worked well in GA clay except for direct sowing seeds. The 4-6" of wood chips would be completely composted by the next growing season, so I would direct seed and let the plants grow before adding the wood chips. It was backbreaking work to shovel and haul wood cold and put on more layers every spring and spread wood chips 2-3x a year in between each time we grew something. And it took an enormous amount of wood chips that eventually we weren't able to source. Had the same issues in AL. For row cropping, in both states, all we had was a walk-behind tiller.. The clay soil was too hard in GA for me to use it so i had to wait for my husband's muscles and time. He never had some to do tilling more than once, so I couldn't keep the weeds back in a 2000+ sq. ft garden area plus orchard and taking care of livestock and children and homeschooling. Husband works construction off the farm. So we went to raised beds and intensively growing in them. It used less mulch, less manure and other soil additives like compost, fertilizer, lime, etc. and was more manageable for me to do alone once the beds were built and filled. I've gone back to raised beds and using leaf mulch that I collect all fall as it's lightweight enough for me to put out. I compost everything else i collect with my chickens doing the work and use their bedding and the compost to keep the beds topped off once a year with either hubby's help or hired help for a day now that the kids are grown and my muscles aren't enough. I use landscape fabric in the walkways so I don't have to weed eat or mow between beds. Gardening is finally fun again and still very productive. I still garden in any 2000' of space, but now I have herbs and flowers too as the raised beds are so productive since the weeds are minimal and the height is helpful for my back.

    I feel like a lot of some of the newer gardening methods are people just saying; "Hey have you tried throwing time, money, and effort at the problem?" which isn't really practical in the real world. I don't like using plastic but the back UV stable weed fabric and using silage tarps to kill weeds is really the only practical thing that works for me.

      With my back I just can't do the weed fabric. Some of these things are tougher than they make them appear.

    So what kind of fertilizer do you use?

    • @CollegeHillFarm
      @CollegeHillFarm Před 18 dny

      I use granular fertilizer 10-10-10 not a certain variety. Whatever is available locally.

    My father used to get a cotton rag damp, scatter seeds on it, roll it up, and put it in a soup where it would stay warm then check on it every day/make sure it's damp. Then he could count the number of sprouts to check how good old seed was.

    You know you can buy higher number fertilizer for same price and just use less?

    • @CollegeHillFarm
      @CollegeHillFarm Před 18 dny

      It is not the same price here. Also, it is a matter of availability. Small towns only have one or 2 places you can get it.

    You are obviously smart enough and educated enough to know that conspiracy and theory are two different words, with two different meanings. Conspiracies are a fact of life - that's just the way it is, and always has been. Many theories have been proven to be facts. When the two words conspiracy and theory are used together our minds have been programed (educated) to dismiss what follows with ridicule. The fact that there are chem trails is becoming common knowledge. I enjoyed your channel.

      I have found that most (90%+) conspiracy theories are not truthful at all. Most are made up for a political agenda.

    I wonder if you soak your okra seed in water for 24 hours if your machine will still plant it for you and give you that extra boost😊

      @@CollegeHillFarm Might dry the seed off a few hours on a tray before trying to plant. There's a method of "priming" seeds by soaking them before planting to get a jump on sprouting.

    thank you for making these videos.as im getting older and my health issues increase im trying to learn the easiest most economic way to garden on scale to what your doing for 2 people. im building my house now but hopefully in say 5 years i can get into the gardening aspect of this hot and heavy. could you do a list or video of the equipment you have and use yearly since youve been doing this for awhile and will give a good cost estimate of the equipment i should shoot for to save money in the long run?i have a small kubota tractor with building attachment but havent gotten around to getting farming/gardening attachment yet. also if youve ever had a drought to deal withwhat is the best way to water your sizable garden? i live in southern az and watering is a must and must be done economically.any watering systems you prefer?

      That is a great Idea about the video. I think I will do one like that. Welcome to the channel. We live in central ky and seldom have to deal with drought. I have never had to water except on transplanting.

    I just picked up my first tractor last week and i have a small area thats grown in just like your was. I was thinking of using the bucket but I was just worried that i would damage my bucket. Do you think i should do the same trick but put the rail addon on the bucket with teeth ? Thank you ver much for the video. And the tractor i picked up is a New Holland Workmaster 25 compact.

      @CollegeHillFarm Před 20 dny

      I would say go for it. Like my tractor your's is probably to small to damage the bucket. Just be careful and don't tip it over. That is the only danger and watch out for limbs around your grill and radiator.

    Loved this video! I love sunflowers. Planted some last year and have a bunch of volunteers! Anxious to see what I get. Very interesting about the seed swap. I will have to research and see if there is one is SW VA. And I love when you talk about all the different kinds of seeds, love the growing tips and just the general information you share. After watching a video on the Greasy Beans, I found them online and planted them. It took me back to my grandma's kitchen, the smell of them cooking and the taste was what I totally remember as a child(and I am no spring chicken) They are a staple in our home now and making memories with my grandkids sitting on the porch stringing beans. Thanks Joel for your knowledgeable and down to earth content.
