    As a kid in the late 60's and throughout the 70's, we always stopped to see the Hesper and Luther Little on our way up to Lake Damariscotta. I remember being obsessed with seeing them every time we passed. And of course we always begged Mom to stop at Red's! Boy do I miss those trips. When I found out decades later that they eventually collapsed and were finally removed, it felt like a huge piece of my childhood was ripped out of my heart. The last time I saw them was in 1982, so they look pretty much the same here still. Thanks for the Video, and the memories!

    I remember and looked forward as a kid in the '60's and early '70's viewing the 2 schooners, including with masts; very evocative; my family looked forward to viewing "Hesper" and "Luther Little" each August as we crossed the bridge journeying up to Camden from Mass to camp in our tent, then tent- trailer. When returning to Mass after vacation, we glimpsed them too, but they were on the right side for viewing when riding north. I too wished they had been preserved as picturesque hulks for current and future generations.

      Hello Kyle - thank you for watching and commenting. When I made the film I interviewed many Wiscasset residents who recounted the same thing - playing on the ships in their youth. Those interviews, for the most part, did not make the final film because they were outside the theme of the preservation effort. I often wonder what I left on the cutting room floor. There was probably a second short film that could have been made from that.

    @4:22, narrator states "even though, both ships were built in 1917". Still constructing ships, out of wood in 1917🤨?? That's the first problem here. NO technological advancements, learned from the past, is a recipe for failure, in the future😉!!! I live on an island, off the coast of South Jersey. When I was a kid, there was a sunken 3 masted schooner, in one of our local marina's. My Dad used to take me to go see it (before, AND after it sunk), every so often. When I was older, I'd go see it, whenever I got the chance. It sat there for years, until the Federal Clean Air and Water Act, of 1974-75, which required the owners (or in this case, the marina) to clean up, sunken ships/boats. The federal act helped businesses financially, with the endeavor. They didn't wreck it, but patched it up and refloated it. This happened a couple of times, until they were successful. Turns out, the name of the schooner was "THE AMERICAN", and had won awards for it's speed, in the past. During around 1980 or so, it was going to be restored down south, but sunk on its way, there.

      @@bluewirepa Agree, thanks for your video! and for pointing it out: Wood was cheaper, much more plentiful. I've heard it described also, for schooners in their later days: built of wood, when loaded with wood, old schooners were unsinkable in coastal operations. They could squeeze a profit out of carrying lumber or bricks or...

    Thank you for this wonderful document of these two ships. Used to pass by the wrecks everytime my family drove up to Maine from PA as a kid. I remember my face pressed against the window in amazement as we drove by. Not sure when as an adult I finally noticed "something" was missing from the harbor as we again drove up to Maine but I suspect it was sometime in the 00's. Thumbs up to this!

    5:20 this guy is speaking the gospel, it is so important to preserve history and tools and architecture and Technology even if they are no longer used because it shows people the evolution of the things they have today and the techniques that gave birth to them. And so as a child you may think it's boring or stupid to go to a museum and see an old wooden ship but as you get older and appreciate life more you appreciate archaeologists and preservationists and what they do. And yes I'm probably talking about myself. Anyway just as he predicted they didn't take a chunk of the ship with the mast in time and move it to a secure location for future generations to enjoy. Sad.

    *Thanks ‘Bluewire Video’.In my youth my first ship was the last registered Swedish merchant navy 4-masted Schooner Elna, built in Denmark 1919. A handsome ship. The sails were only hoisted once as we were bound for Denmark, Horsens. Loaded with of wood, planks from Kotka, Finland. I also recall the thumping auxillary engine. The year was 1968. Elna was later sold and sunk in the Mediterranean. November 2022 I’m 73 I live in Thailand 🇹🇭 and make CZcams videos* czcams.com/video/5FWm9DUH8Ig/video.html

      @bluewirepa Před 2 lety

      The ships are no longer there. They were removed in 1998 having been ravaged by time and weather. Harry Hager said it well in the film: “the masts are what draw people.” Once the masts fell it was time to clean up the remains. The Maine Maritime Museum saved a few pieces for their museum in Bath, Maine, and wood from the schooners is also on display in the Somerset Historical Society. There is a public deck near the spot of the schooners where informational kiosks with photos still tell their story.
