The Battle Of Sugar Point 1898 || Ojibwe vs US Army
On October 5th, 1898, a fight erupted that would be remembered in history. The Battle of Sugar Point, also known as the Battle of Leech Lake, saw a small band of Pillager Ojibwe warriors hold off a much larger force of US soldiers. This clash marked the culmination of tensions between the Ojibwe and the US government, fueled by disputes over land rights, resources, and treatment of Native American people.
Before the battle of Sugar Point, the Pillager band of Ojibwe or Chippewa from Leech Lake in Minnesota, were treated harshly by the settlers. Such was the case for all Indigenous people in North America at the time. Also, logging companies worked on deforestation of the land sacred to the Natives. All these problems led to what is today called "The last Native American uprising in the United States".

My mother's father's paternal ancestor arrived at Jamestown in 1614 right after the fighting stopped. His name was listed as Master John Morris age 19. That meant he wasn't an adult but did pay for his passage over. The kid arrived with some money since he bought 150 kegs of tobacco to send back on the ship to pay for supplies he wanted and the passage of his wife. Rolfe's tobacco didn't become popular until 1614 so we think John kept quiet about that when buying the kegs. We also believe John and his wife were Jews with financial backers in Holland since nobody has been able to trace their lineage in England. The Virginia Colony administrators were inept and crooked when awarding land to new arrivals so many went to live out with the natives on land bought from them. In 1620 the Virginia Company directors in England issued a decree that allowed new arrivals to acquire land that wasn't controlled by the Virginia Colony. We know nothing about John and wife from 1615 thru 1619 due to colony records being burned with Jamestown during Bacon's Rebellion. They finally showed up in 1620 attending a meeting of Friends in a small community by the Albemarle Estuary. That was on the other side of the Great Dismal Swamp in what was considered to be hostile native territory. John had been doing well since his wife was pregnant again after having 2 healthy babies after arriving. John was surveying land for the Virginia Company while operating a lumber and timber export business. They became wealthy and had more kids. Their kids followed suit with the Morris families children receiving a higher education to become the doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs in North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
