Family Ties - Iphone Short Film (2024)
Family Ties is a short film shot on an Iphone, written as a part of my "Say Something" project for my MA in directing at Metfilm. This was the first film I produced as a part of my MA. At the time I'd been watching a lot of PhilosophyTube and reading some Lenin, so I figured I might as well make the thing that I was saying "ACAB".

How to make a film in 48 hours (with puppets)
zhlédnutí 303Před rokem
A follow up to my "How to survive a 48 hour film festival" video from wayyyy way back in 2020. Basically just a few tips on how to make a film in 48 hours, based on my experience of the Bristol 48 Hour Puppet film Challenge, 2022. I took part in the challenge in 2020 with some of the same team members as 2022. If you want to watch a playlist of puppet stuff, you can click here: czcams.com/video...
How to Have ideas
zhlédnutí 401Před rokem
A little video about how to come up with ideas! At the end of the day, everything is just recombination, so generating new ideas is often just a matter of coming up with connections you wouldn't normally think of. Also, I just want to make it known, I had so much fun with the first 5 seconds of this video. Just very briefly pretending to be Edgar Wright. Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if almost a...
The Bad Day Fix
zhlédnutí 185Před rokem
Honestly, I need to take my own advice more often. I know a lot of the time it's easier said than done, so don't worry too much if you're struggling. Hopefully this is a bit more of a practical video on how to deal with bad days. I think I might do more of these 'self help' kind of videos in the future. Potentially one's with more 'filmmakey' elements to them as well! They take a lot of time, b...
Make your Film feel ALIVE by adding Depth

Trying out some other editing things here, so I hope you like them! Basically another "Stealing from great directors from the 40s/50s" video, like the one I recently did for Hitchcock. I just like me some Orson Welles, y'know! Citizen Kane and Touch of Evil are both Masterpieces. Hopefully this video will be helpful little How To guide to getting more Depth in your shots. I wonder if maybe I ne...
10 Minute Short film Mistakes Filmmakers should Avoid
zhlédnutí 2,6KPřed rokem
I made some very common mistakes when making What Are You Hiding?, my first 10 minute short film. This probably isn't quite a summary of everything to avoid when making a short film, but it's definitely a start. I didn't talk about it much in this video, but I think there's a lot to be said about the difficulty of moving from Micro short films to longer shorts like this one. Ultimately, I'm ver...
Building Suspense in your Short Film by Stealing from Hitchcock

Yeah, I know I'm not the first person to talk about how to create suspense sequences based on Hitchock's "bomb under the table" idea, but I always find it useful to see how people apply ideas like this to their own work. Loving suspenseful films is basically the main reason that I got into making movies in the first place. So yeah, here's my Hitchcock Inspired guide to how to make a film suspen...
3 Easy Techniques for Beginner filmmakers

I am once again making youtube videos about structure! It's fun getting back into the swing of it, and I hope I'm not retreading too much ground from videos like my How To Make a Micro Short Film video, but I think a lot of this is valuable in it's own right! This isn't so much a "How to structure a short film" as it is "A small handful of things to keep in mind when making a short film". Let m...

Love it 😊
Nicely filmed but too obvious. The guy would have to be an idiot to believe that if she killed once she wouldn't hesitate to kill again.
A bit dry in the end...
I would love to see a continuation of this!!! 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for this, you know what they say the best advice doesn't necessarily come from 'winners' but 'losers'. Like ppl who 'fail' (this isn't a failure) at something usually have more wiser tips/feedback than those who always win. SOO I found this very helpful thank you!
Long as you're learning
Excellent thank you for this info! Incredible sounding mic too.
Impressive! 🌟✨ Your creativity knows no bounds! 🎬 Any film festivals planned?
Brilliant job! 🎥✨ So captivating and well-made! 🌟 Who did the cinematography?

omg that was soooo good to watch
milo went go-go?
Dude...that CAN'T be how it ends! I crave more
I think it's a good movie, i just can't help any more but finding the "award winning" in the title ridiculous, especially if it is accompanied by two images, one saying "official selection" and one "finalist" . Neither of that is an award, and on youtube everybody has an Award Winning short film, with this cheap excuse.
You finished it and I love how you were honest with yourself. That’s the mark of a great filmmaker in the making. I basically agree with all of these and try to avoid them to the best of ability but sometimes when you have no budget, you have to work with what you have around you.
You look like you are wearing one of those disguise glasses with a big nose
Helpful!! Thanks loads
Haha loved it. Clear and concise
Please tell me Milo is OK... please tell me. Poor Milo, was so young :(
I counted three plot twists in one minute

As a short film maker with microscopic budget, i subject myself to a lot of pressure. Recently i had the experience of 7 days of guerilla shooting with no prior approvals for locations except on 2 days. My health broke down and i had to visit emergency room & have two ECGs. Lesson learnt : Guerilla shooting is like an adventure as long as it last but if you are shooting a proper script, then, schedule properly after rehearsals.
Excellent show , very pleased
I really like how this was shot
Brilliant
Great video. However... we don't really use celluloid anymore?
Hero: I agree with your fight against status quo, but not the way you're fighting it. Villain: How are you fighting it? Hero: Eh...hm...doing nothing except fighting those who are trying to fight status quo.
eh kinda of. more like violent revolution isn't the way to fix the status quo. superheroes believe that through their example of saving people, and on the backs of idealism, that the world will start to reform some of the ideas in the status quo. this goes into what's more important, reforming the status quo vs violent revolution. at the same time you have civil war, where captain america doesn't want to work for the status quo, because he doesn't trust it.

What makes a good film? The concept. Good sound, set dec stuff, ok, but if your idea sucks, execution matters little. You need good acting, which also means you'll need tight shots, not just wides. The thing about actors is, if they're working free, you need juicy stuff for their reels. Also you want to minimize on number of actors. If you can do it with one, do it. Actors will go missing on you, so reduce the risk.
Awesome video bro

What camera and lens you use? ❤
Camera body was Black Magic Pocket. Not sure which model or what the lenses were, but I remember that they were primes not zooms! If you want to know specifics, you'd have to ask my DoP 😅
I LOVE THIS!
