    Thanks for the mouse warning. I'm constantly fighting mouse damage in equipment and trucks... been using glue boards. • @patrickcleburneuczjsxpmp9558

    The TimberKing seems like the most comparable competition. I'm sure you considered it, too. What made you decide on the Cooks over the TimberKing?

    • @gansonsonthehill
      @gansonsonthehill Před 28 dny

      I did consider, but some things really made it easy for me 1- the cooks folks was not ashamed of sharing their faith in their videos. 2- they are extremely knowledgeable and seemed to truly want to help people. Even if you have a competitive mill. 3- all of the engineering they have put into the mills really made a lot of sense to me, having a strong mechanical background myself. (Steel wheels ground to tights tolerances)

  • @patrickcleburneuczjsxpmp9558

    And one more question. You say you like the idea of a hydraulic sawmill. What advantages appeal to you? Mainly just being able to manipulate the logs with less physical involvement? Anything else notable?

    • @gansonsonthehill
      @gansonsonthehill Před 28 dny

      Efficiency mainly, with hydraulic mills so much manual labor is eliminated. Which obviously speeds things up a lot. But for me and use here on the farm, I cannot justify additional cost.

  • @patrickcleburneuczjsxpmp9558

    I just discovered your channel, have watched multiple videos, and have very much appreciated them all. Thank you! A couple questions: What about using water as a lubricant do you not like? And approximately how big a log can you clamp with the Cook's clamping system?

    • @gansonsonthehill
      @gansonsonthehill Před 28 dny

      Hope you find something helpful on our channel! Water as a lube works ok, however diesel fuel prevents the pitch build up much better in my opinion. Doesn’t require near as much. And to me it doesn’t make sense knowing I want dried lumber eventually and if use water it requires a significant amount, so just adding moisture to your lumber every pass. Not to mention up here in Ohio you have to use some kind of antifreeze. Clampable log size?, I am guessing 26-28 maybe?

      Well….. lol, in an airtight environment it can be directed. Theoretically the heat and smoke enters cabinet high, is pulled down over meat and exits bottom of cabinet because it is the only way to exit. Making for a more consistent temp inside top to bottom.

    I've noticed the same "ringing" noise on my MP32 from sawdust on the wheels. I've been looking for but, haven't found yet, a brush, kinda like a fingernail brush to mount so that it cleans the wheels continually in addition to the felts for each wheel. It's good to see real life Cook's video's. Thanks for sharing!

    • @gansonsonthehill
      @gansonsonthehill Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks! I used very fine emery cloth and cleaned the small amounts of surface rust spots that was on the wheels and that helped a lot. Sawdust doesn’t seem to “stick” to the wheels now. I’ve learned to let it run a few minutes before shutting down for any length of time and it gives the wheels a nice coat of fuel on them and minimizes any rust developing.

    Have you ever felt you would benefit if the mill had a 3rd log stop or 3rd log dog? Also, do you think the mill would be more stable with 2 more pair of jacks - cutting the span between jacks down to 5 ft? With the Timber King, I was planning to set the mill on 6x6 piers and beams, but that would be difficult with a 20-ft welded deck. Trailer is probably the way to go with the 20+ ft Cooks. Regarding the trailer, did it feel risky pulling long distance with 1 axle? A blowout might be a serious problem at speed.

    • @gansonsonthehill
      @gansonsonthehill Před 6 měsíci

      I will do my best to answer each question, give my opinions 3rd log stop, there is work around but sawing anything under 8’6” it would be very helpful to have 3rd log stop I have sawn some very large oak on mine, very heavy, and mill was stable. Don’t know that adding more leveling jacks would make enough difference to justify. I believe timber kings decks are welded as well. Not sure what you mean “would be difficult with 20’ welded deck” I pulled mine to central ohio from cooks facility. No issue at all, most of the way is 70mph speed limits and it done well at those speeds (plus a little 😂)

    Hello from Nova Scotia. I think your videos and channel are going to do well, you seem honest and straight forward, without the B.S. My Woodland Mills has the stainless bunk caps as well, but I'd sure like that MP32 set up if the truth were told. I wonder why the blades don't seem to discolor the boards the way the clamps do? Maybe just not contacting long enough???

    • @gansonsonthehill
      @gansonsonthehill Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for watching and the encouragement! As far as the blades not staining white oak, if blade alignment is set properly, teeth on blade are set proper the only part of the blade that contacts wood is the tip of tooth. And the wood it touches is turned to sawdust and taken away. Also blade isn’t at any one spot for for more than milliseconds. Just my uneducated theory!

    I ordered my Cook's MP-32 almost a year ago after spending a couple of years researching and comparing various mills on the market. As you stated the Cook's mill is not the cheapest mill out there. However, I think it is very competitively priced. I liked the design simplicity and the heavy-duty fabrication. My mill will not be ready until late June of 2024. They told me that upfront. Wood Miser had a similar wait period as did some of the other manufacturers. The delays are primarily due to demand and supply/labor issues. The people at Cook's seemed genuinely interested in my business. I can't say that for all of the manufacturers I talked to. I look forward to picking my mill up in Alabama this summer and putting it to use. Your video confirmed my research and choice. Thanks for posting. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
