With you about not needing a lot of shimmer inks. Ultimately, everyone I've written with a shimmer ink never noticed. It's really just for my enjoyment. So, for me, a few bottles for certain holidays.. And I think Diamine does shimmer about the best. Generally, it is a very noticeable amount, still very well behaved for multiple types of paper.

I had a sample tube of it, its a beautiful ink in my opinion.

Just loaded my sample of this. Jinhao 82 with a fairly wet fine nib on Muji loose leaf paper. This is my first go at a shimmering ink. It does shimmer, but not as much as I would have hoped. The first 2 sentences after filling are what I would want this ink to always look like, but in my pen, it only lasted while the feed was flooded. After that it toned down, and I do get shimmer throughout the writing, but sparsely. My issue is the base blue color is just boring to me. No shading, no vibrancy, it reminds me of almost a generic ballpoint denim blue. I think if they had used the blue from Sargasso Sea and added the shimmer it would be much more interesting. .02 deposited for future viewers lol.

If you're looking for paper testing review suggestions, I recommend looking at great budget papers from Walmart and other low cost stores like Target. Another fountain pen channel did this on a basic level, turning me on to the Pen + Gear brand, who knew 50 sheets for a dollar worked so well? The hack was to search for made in India or Vietnam, countries that have a high number of fountain pen users. I'm sure you would do a more thorough review of these great quality at low cost papers. What's the dry time and viscosity?

This is an ink for me. It might even replace one of my favourites Montblanc Royal Blue. Thanks.

I've got Diamine Marine in a Lamy 2000 Double Broad now and it's great. Saturated with shading, toward the greener side but still a real turquoise.

You should try the copy paper sold at The Dollar General. It's made in Vietnam and is really excellent with no bleed through. It even handles sheening inks. It's thin, in the 50+ gsm range. I haven't been able to find the heavier version that I've seen mentioned but it's well worth a try.

I didn't know that Parker knockoff, will have to check it out, I had to do some gifts to the nephews who are starting highschool and I ended up getting them 2 Lamy al-star with a bunch of cartridge packs that I got on a deal, should be enough to get them through the whole year and hopefuly make them appreciate this great writing tool.

Akhmatova is one of my favorite green inks due to its color and ink properties, but I can understand if not everyone likes it. IMO it's one of those inks where you have to really find the sweet spot to like it. It's a very wet ink, and I had my greatest enjoyment by figuring how to tame it with a dry pen and writing lightly; I inked up a Faber Castell Hexo EF by syringe refilling it, then wrote with a very light touch. If you do that, the green that comes out is not dark, but somewhat light and faded, and due to the grey pigment, the ink also has subtle shading all over your writing. If you use fountain pen friendly paper, i also found you can get the same light green if you use a Sailor with a MF nib.

Zhivago is great for professional settings if you're allowed to use something other than black or blue; with an ef nib, this ink will initially go on so dark it looks like it's black, and then over time, dry to a dark green, almost dried-seaweed-sheet green. For me, because I never use wet writing pens, it never comes out initially black, unless I use my Sailor dip pen in fine nib. I consider this like a cousin to Akhmatova; they're both dark green inks, but depending on what color and ink properties you like, you may prefer one over the other. I personally like Akhmatova more, because to me the green's a little lighter in a drier pen, but Zhivago is good too as a change of pace.

I like to use green inks. Is this ink gonna stain? Im a bit afraid of using the noodlers inks because of that. I love Baystate Blue for example great blue ink. Australian roses great red. Maybe Zhivago be my next green

I didn’t notice a viscosity but it looks like it flows really well. It took me a while to get around to green and brown inks but now I love them!

In portuguese this color is called _Azul Petróleo,_ which mean in english _Petroleum Blue._

My own picks for an ultra budget version is the pen+gear composition notebooks and loose paper, Noodler's black, Noodler's Hawthorne Scarlett, Noodler's Blue, Noodler's Green Marine, and a 4 pack of the Jinhao 86.

It's more expensive than rhodia for me.

Mr Guy... if you do not mind comments from a Kawasaki (Z650RS) rider <g>, 1) I have a Wing Sung 601 (chrome ends, clear barrel) 'Frankenpen' - super choice, but any color is fine. I love it so much that I am actually considering the gold nib. Any hooded Jinhao should work as well. 2) While at Walmart, look at 'Pen+Gear Dot Ruled Poly Composition Book, 7.5" x 9.75", White, 80 Sheets' and 'Pen + Gear Dot Ruled 1-Subject Notebook, 8.5" x 10", White, 80 Sheets' each around $2.50USD. The one subject notebook is my daily writing practice notebook. 3) I understand that the Kokouyo Campus (I use Sarasara) B5 notebooks and papers were created using Japanese student studies. The B5 Sarasara loose leaf is my commonplace journal paper and it would work better on tiny desk writing surfaces.

That’s a brilliant video for students to watch in regard to choosing the appropriate pen, ink and paper combination. - I don’t actually have a Wing Sung 601 but I’ve seen countless reviews on how the filling mechanism works, the same way it did for the Parker 51 Vacumatic decades ago. If I were to purchase one, perhaps I would jump on the bandwagon at some point. Who knows… - I’m a university student myself and starting my third and final year this October. At the moment, my main pen to take notes is my Lamy 2000 with a medium nib and inked with Parker Quink Black. As for paper, I usually write on inexpensive notebooks that have below-average paper quality and this Quink ink usually performs well with no issues. - I hope this video does well for those students who are looking into using the required tools for school/college/university.

Just went back to this ink that I have for 4 years now. You advice is accurate as usual: use a wet (extra) fine nib. The ink is still not oxydated so it’s blue coming out of the bottle and dries (rather quickly) teal black and ends after months being warm grey. It’s waterproof. I’m testing it now on water proof paper (cheap version of rite in the rain notebooks) to use for plans and notes outdoors. Not for writing but reading in wet conditions. Still love your ink test series!

Have you used this with, say, Noodler's Warden series inks, which are (unlike the maker's claim, in my experience) prone to spread and feather? The microperforation is kinda a draw for me. Means it could also be used for writing letters without the "torn out of a notebook" edge. Will agree about the binding. Not a personal favorite. Would prefer something more lay flat without the hump in the middle.

Unbelievable! I was unable to sleep eight hours ago. So I sat in the home office trying Ayush paper I had been given by Write Here of Shrewsbury. I used an assortment of fine nibs and the following list of inks: Monteverde Horizon Blue (very lubricated, wet pen) Platinum Sepia Pigment ink Aurora Black Leonardo Turquoise Diamine Writers Blood (with a heavy dense scribble) There was no feather or show through. After Clairefontaine and Rhodia it was a toothier experience, pleasant though. Nice for contemplative writing but for speed and quantity I will go to the other two papers.

Short and sweet, but how does it handle sheen?

I didn't care about the Distributive Property in Highschool and I don't care about it now. Sounds Commie.

I love Oxford and their Optik Paper. Readily available here in Germany, about 2€ for a 60 sheet A5 notebook, handles ink really well, has a nice and soft feel to it and does not bleed through at all. If you can find it, it is worth a look!

Love the new setup. Have you tried the Kokuyo Campus notebooks? Unfortunately they're only 30 sheets, 60 pages for about $3.60 USD. I'd suggest it for any student who enjoys writing.

Great info as always. When I discovered your ink videos it was a game changer. Just recently I was looking for new ink colors and I spent some quality time on your videos. I find the “sciencey bits” especially helpful in my ink choices. Lol! I found it!
