How Respite Can Give Caregivers a Break and Keep Your Elderly Loved One Safe
If you have a business trip, want to go on vacation or just need a break from caregiving for your aging parent, but don't think it's safe for them to be at home by themselves, you may be feeling stuck.
Respite Care could be a helpful option. The definition of respite is a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant. Respite care can provide a short-term stay at a senior community. It can give the caregiver the assurance that their elderly loved one is being taken care of so the caregiver can do what they need to do.
Dr. Narendra Punjabi has been an Internal Medicine Doctor for almost 40 years and is the new owner of Sunflower Memory Care in Cedar Park, Texas. In this sponsored interview, Dr. Punjabi talks with Kim & Mike Barnes of Parenting Aging Parents about how respite care works, how he wishes he had known about it when he had a parent living with him and why he's offering a one week minimum stay to make respite care more accessible.

I think the work you do is remarkable. You really put your heart into your work. I work for a tech startup, along with my team. We're building a platform to support caretakers. We have some people based in Austin, TX. We'd love if we could have an intro with you guys.
If you already have Medicaid, and get an Inheritance, you have to pay back any assistance or use lose tge following months until are back to where you were?
That's an interesting question. Here's info from a free service provided by the American Council on Aging. www.medicaidplanningassistance.org/inheritance/ Hope this helps.
What if your parent is in acute care for 3 months and your just applying for Medicaid he receives 1700 a month from social security but because hes been in the accute care for 3 month his account is over 2000 due to each months payment from social security payments building up. i have not touched his account because i didn't no if i had the ability to do that to pay his bills like rent and phone he was staying with me im his only living daughter but he cant return to the place we were staying it was temporary until we found a bigger place which im trying to work and save towards to get a place big enough for us both so i can care for him but i don't no if i can legally touch his income to pay for the cost of living im the person who makes decisions for him but i dont have guardianship or poa over him . Hes incompetent im new to this and was in the process of trying to plan for our future before his accident this put us in a horrible situation im only one person with 3 children id like to care for him but i dont no if he will even get Medicaid and if i can get a place fast enough for us all i dont make alot of money at all struggling to servive i dont no what services are available for people like us its alot to take on as a single mother but hes my dad im already working as a inhome care taker if he qualify for Medicaid and i get a place thats safe and appropriate for us will they only have me caring for him or will i be able to receive some help so i can have a break i just dont no what path i should take
Does an attorney even need to be involved?
Adult Protective Services are corrupt in Norfolk, VA and Kansas City, MO!! I called them for help to protect my husband from his abusive daughter. When they learned we had millions, they had GAL file false report. The corruption was a well oiled machine including judges who ignored DPOA and my husband's own testimony. They put him in a nursing home with NO MEDICAL ISSUES AGAINST HIS WILL. They stole almost 4million by selling all our 4 homes for quick cash then within days, they drugged him to death. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. THEY LIE. THEYRE EVIL.
I'm told from the nursing home who is applying for Medicaid for my sister, she was married five times but never changed her social security card to her new name.this is what is stopping her from being approved.HUH ?
Never call them!!! They are corrupt. The will put your loved one under guardianship or conservatorship and ROB YOU BLIND.
Please elaborate: like can you get a specifics if this happened to you or someone you know? What state was that? Etc.?
Great information easy to understand. Gold nugget tips
What about it happening at a Treatment facility?
I'd reach out to the Ombudsman's office in your area. They help resolve disputes and concerns in assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing or nursing homes. You can find one in all 50 states. Do a google search for "Area Agency on Aging" and your city. They should be able to tell you how to find the ombudsman's office. If it's an emergency you can also report complaints to the state agency in your state that oversees those facilities. In Texas, it's Health and Human Services and their hotline number is 800-458-9858. If you're in another state, do google search for "complaint hotline" for whatever type treatment facility you're concerned with. Here's an interview we did about what an Ombudsman does, if helpful. czcams.com/video/7YM8TMLxCS4/video.htmlsi=8AlBuSiJyivDPZuD
The VA does allow you to hire a private care giver and they vet them for you. You don’t have to go through an agency.
There are many different programs so definitely find the one that works best for you!
I can’t even imagine life without my mother, I can’t sleep some nights because I dread this moment.
So sorry to hear. Sounds like you are definitely experiencing anticipatory grief. Hopefully you can get the help you need.
Thank you
So glad it was helpful. It is so confusing!
Why doesn't America take care of its elderly instead of worrying so much about all the rich people and foreign countries.
Better not be navigating social security, BOY
can you explain the difference in between having a life insurance policy could affect being qualify?
I'd check with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services www.usa.gov/agencies/centers-for-medicare-and-medicaid-services. There's also a link there to find your state Medicaid office since benefits vary by state.
Hopefully Oklahoma will be better 🙏🏽
I made up a rhyme to differentiate the 2. MEDICAID-don’t get paid. MEDICARE-got gray hair.
It can be hard to keep them straight!
It's getting harder and harder to find doctors who will accept Medicaid. It truly is bottom of the barrel care, which in most cases is no care at all.
Sorry you're having trouble.

Sorry you're having trouble. Maybe the Illinois Dept of Aging can point you in the right direction. Look for the office that's close to where you need help. ilaging.illinois.gov/forprofessionals/areaagenciesonaging.html
Interesting when attorneys in general never want to give the fee range that they charge. Obviously people want to decrease the amount of expense because the fees are high. Anyway, I thoroughly am enjoying your videos as they are informative. Thank you!
Glad you're finding the interviews helpful. Many attorneys offer a free consult so they can get a better idea of your needs. There are so many variables that can make a situation more or less complicated and time consuming, it's hard for any professional to guess how long it will take which determines the cost.
This was very helpful. Thank you for posting this.
Glad it was helpful. It is so hard to go through this.
@@parentingagingparents My dad is in his 90's and I see him really slowing down. I will probably be there when he passes and the anxiety of this is something I've been feeling more and more. I'm sharing this video with my siblings because we really need to talk about this stage in my concerns. Just get that out there .
If I quit my job do I still qualify for Medicaid if I was previously getting healthcare through my employer? 19 and 16 weeks pregnant. Don’t know if that would make a difference located in IL
Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that can you apply for if you meet certain income requirements. You apply through your state. Here's a website for IL: hfs.illinois.gov/medicalclients/medicaidguide/applying.html
I am having that for my husband, although I could in reality go first.
It can come in so many different situations. Sorry for your situation.
I’m only 5 minutes in so far so apologies if you go into this more. Yes everybody please consider password complexity and uniqueness and age - but OMG NO don’t write yours or else’s passwords down - in a book or on paper - in any chaotic or even organized fashion - in pencil OR pen. Unless this physical notebook or papers-in-folders will only sit static in a sturdy locked physical safe all the time. Passwords are more powerful now than they were when our parents had to come up with them. Treat them like you would money in the bank and put them in a secure vault.
In general you are not incorrect, however, it can be done safely. Keep it in a designated password protector and then lock it in a cabinet or safe. Sometimes it's a necessity and better than no online access.
With some less tech savvy people, using password managers and online vaults just isn't really an option. They can keep written passwords safe. Or like with my mom, we've just limited what can be accessed on her computer at all.. no bank accounts or other financial accounts so there's not much anyone could get to.
Thanks to all of you! I am in anticipatory grief alot because 10 days ago my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer....16 months ago he had a tumor inside the esophagus and now its spread to lymph nodes. I have been grieving this since the day we found out 16 months ago. Mr. Colwell I am so sorry for your loss and I so get it...about the wanting to travel and how the diagnosis changed everything! I feel like you described what we feel better then anyone I have heard so far. Thank you!
Does a lady bird deed overturn an affidavit of heirship
From what I've learned there are some documents that do similar things but might be called something different in different states. I'd check with an attorney in your state to make sure you have what you need for your specific situation.
This old man says starting on July 5, 2024 Fiduciary Security Elder Law Inheritance Administration will reward RE agents to Financial Advisors $1500.00 for each forgery proof NICER 837PC interdiction Gold Whoopi Bird another name for Lady Bird deeds so no one can steal our homes.
Super helpful, working with APS in FL currently. So far, they have been on top of it. I feel that they are advocating for my grandma (the client) AND me!
So glad to hear!

Sir, i want to contact with you, please give me your Instagram account
I will be meticulous when it comes to Medicaid qualifications. They do not tell you that this program can take your home as a pay-back. Both the federal and the county will collect their money somehow somewhere
It is all so confusing and every person's situation is definitely different. Finding a person who can advise you and your situation can help you decide what's the best plan of action for you.
They can't touch your home if it has a homestead exemption attached to it. Also if you quit claim deed the home to someone or leave it to them in a will the home cannot be touched.
So basically, everybody’s a narcissist
Thanks for the discussion, Mike & Kim!!!
I’m feeling this right now as I’m watching my aging mother experience extreme shortness of breath just doing small things. She has COPD.
How do they qualify? Oh let us count the ways! And then once they 'qualify' Medicaid will take their home and all their assets. How family wealth gets financialized.
Invaluable. Thanks so much for this information. Helps to lighten the burden whin I understand what is happening.
What if you put you were pregnant but then got a abortion
I'd consult Medicaid expert.
Ughh
I’ve been anticipating this in waves since childhood 🤦🏽♀️ think it’s due to growing as at an only child and your parents often become like your best friends
It is hard since our parents have been the ones we have looked to for answers and advice.
I’m an only child too and can relate

interesting. what if the husband & wife are co-owners on the deed and the husband has passed away? can the Lady Bird Deed be done in that scenario? in Texas btw
