And prior to the Great depression. It was actually common for a husband and wife to have separate beds. During the Great depression it was harder to afford separate beds so a cultural shift made it so it was common practice to share a bed with your spouse.

Compare that to 6000 year old ancient Indian civilization with proper working toilet and sewage for the whole city. The British really ruined everything.

history is like a wave, it is not a dish where tastes and trends live in a constant phase of stasis: the Italian baroque led to the neoclassicism of the following centuries and therefore to the recovery of a polite elegance without too many frills. Then there was the French Revolution and all the cultural baggage that it brought with it: the pompous Napoleonic style, from which we Italians brought out the Umbertine style, equally redundant in terms of ornaments. It is not surprising that the direct consequence was the Bauhaus (or rationalism in Italy), with Los's manifesto defining ornamentation as a crime. There is nothing right in all this, nothing wrong, it is human tastes that change according to a very specific pattern over the centuries.

I started collecting paintings last year. I am about to buy to second. I don’t know why I’m drawn to impressionistic styles. I guess it’s the vibrant colors anf the depictions of nature. Or, perhaps, it’s how light is presented and how it enables effects of reflection on nature (like water). But figured I’d start learning about what I’ve been buying. Great information :)

Think you've reversed the premise. Surrealism is a rebellion against psychoanalytic belief that everything we think can be reduced to boxes. A fish on a bicycle was a phrase and image that extols this premise. Interesting to hear it perceived differently.

Radio City Music Hall is the basilica of deco. I love the Chrysler Tower however, I wish they would light it to highlight the Chrome instead of the triangular windows. The Comcast Building (formerly R.C.A.) should be lite to emphasize the setbacks in Golden light instead of 1 giant harsh light on each side of the building. 💖
