    I absolutely appreciate this but the sprung vs. unsprung weight comparison slide is reversed. 1kg rotating mass (wheel) should be equivalent to 1.6kg non-rotating mass (cargo). You have the 1.6kg of wheel weight being equal to 1kg of cargo weight. Just trying to clarify, otherwise thank you so much for putting this together and delivering it at a great pace!

  • @andrefischer5025

    I think there are a few more factors to consider. When you drive and winch, there is the risk of suddenly getting grip -> winch rope goes slack. Depending on the situation that can have terrible consequences if the car losses traction. Regards the shock loading not really happening, I tend to disagree somewhat. It takes some experience to judge and manage winch/throttle/break coordination. I lost a winch when helping a less experienced off-roader, I was winching him up the hill and he overrun, slipped and my winch gears were toast. Always depends on the situation, just diffed out on a moderate hill? 100%, winch & drive. Palm creek exit to steep and wombat holes to deep? I’ll trust my winch in short bursts only.

    I think also the more inertia you have in the trailer with speed the more risk there is the trailer can effect its own direction. That is to say that if you travel slow, you can’t get trailer sway, those influences are too small. If you are going to tow over 60mph / 100kph your risk It’s going to shoot way up at increasing rates.

    I have towed for many years and now tow a 2.6 tonne caravan. My observations are 1. Most people do not understand the various tow limits for their vehicles and end up being overladen. 2. Most people underestimate how heavy all the stuff is they put in their car and caravan. Do they really need a second beer fridge, generator etc etc. 3. People drive too fast when towing - I sit on 92 on cruise and sits comfortably. Take off cruise downhill and uphill and take it easy. Glad to see this couple survived this crash

      Over running the winch rope has to be pretty bad to cause loose packing on the drum - short periods of slack won't do it - and the shock loading is unlikely to be an issue, it just won't be big shocks in the first place.

    Neutral winching never seemed intuitive to me. Validating video. Makes sense to distribute the pulling power. That said i could imagine some scenario where someone might be in drive, rev, getting ahead of winch then a wheel slip occurs and creating shock load on winch. In other words, driving and especially reving could increase probability of that scenario. Of course, attention to the possibility will likely avert the possibility.

    Robert, I am not a seasoned offroader, however it strikes me that a good addition to a test like this would be a laser thermometer on the winch motor. If you aren't holding anyone up maybe a few minutes rest part way up would let the winch and auto box cool down as well as to let the battery recover. Another excellent video.

    • @L2SFBC
      @L2SFBC Před 5 dny

    Looked good, but what about in mud and clay? My concern would be that you get some grip, pull forward and then slide back, shock loading like you did on the downhill return. That risk of increased load is to high IMO. I would have double line pulled (to take the strain off the winch). Winching on flat (thick mud etc) I can see the real advantage.

    • @L2SFBC
      @L2SFBC Před 5 dny

      In thick mud and clay you aren't likely to be getting grip and sliding back. On a slippery hill the technique works, just listen to the winch motor, and leave the car in D as even then you'll get a benefit, with no chance of overrun.
