    From a martial arts perspective what's the difference between a warrior and a barbarian? Or are they both the same?

    • @BlackSunBoxing
      @BlackSunBoxing Před 9 dny

      We have to dig down to what those words mean. A warrior is one who makes war, and that definition has been expanded quite generously to fightets of all sorts. It tends to imply a professional nature as well, or at least a consistent amateur occupation. It also implies the combat is in the service of something, and not just temperamental scrapping. Barbarian, on the other hand, is a bit more interesting. Coined by the Greeks making fun of the way germanic peoples talked, "bar bar bar..." it is a pejorative term for people seen as less or uncivilized, often quarrelsome and uncouth. Historically, this wasn't accurate, it was just Greek racism, but the term stuck. So a warrior is someone who takes up combat in service of some cause, typically with a professional-like refinement, while a barbarian is a quarrelsome scrapper with low refinement.

    I know this is a different topic, but what are your thoughts on bullying and how can martial arts combat this problem? I've been hearing stories of small children taking their own lives over this.

    • @BlackSunBoxing
      @BlackSunBoxing Před 17 dny

      Yep, those stories seem real. Generally, I don't think bullying is the problem. Bullying has always existed, and always will. In some ways, it is necessary, because it's part of how children find how they relate to their peers. The phenomenon of children harming themselves seems to be more related to how we're raising them. Parenting has shifted from giving them space to diiscover life for themselves to this affirming, coddling aporoach that robs them of resilience (check out Jonathan Haidt's work in "the coddling of the american mind"). And this filters right into the school system which acts as a surrogate parent, and a poor one at that. Bullying is just a natural phenomenon. We can't prevent it any more than we can prevent crime. Our job as adults is to develop resilient children, and police the extremes. Currently, parents aren't even parenting, and schools are an utter failure at everything.

    I really dont care about all the negative consequences. I would rather live a short life of purpose than a long life of misery. I've been studying for the last few years on laws, crimes, laws on self-defense, and what tools you can use and ext. I know im dumb or crazy and you're probably a better fighter than me. But for some reason i have this overwhelming sense of i have to do something even tho my actions may be small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, if i can save 1or 2 lives a year my duty will be fulfilled, or just simply help someone get a purse back, just simply help out the small guy you know. I cant stand by and watch people pull out a phone and record a person being fucking murdered anymore i just fucking cant. I can't shake this feeling. You make amazing points, no doubt, and they do scare me for sure. But even with all that said, im fully committed to this 💯. You are the only person on youtube in the last 3 years i have found that talks about vigilantisim in this way seriously. Im sad to hear you tell me not to do this and follow my heart, but i respect your opinion. But i must do this regardless of the dangers. Im from seattle Wa, where superheroes are hilariously common but i dont see them doin it right. I have set a 5 year goal to teach my self the laws, set up my gear, map out the city, and outline the ethics behind my methods. Im 3 years in and in two years i will do my first deployment and put this all to the test. Im not sure why i felt the need to message you, but here it is. I often think about the laws and what could happen to me from cops alone. I feel like im playing dress up sometimes. But i want to take this as seriously as possible. I hope you can shed more light on this topic as i am lost. I often think i should give up this children's dream of fighting crime but every fuckig day i see people stand by and watch murders and stabbings and fights and ect. And the only thing i can think of.... is man, if i was there things may have or COULD have gone differently Im a loner in this world, so im perfect for the job. No family No girlfriend No kids No purpose other than this one... To help thoes that cant help themselves in the face of danger, be vigilant if you want peace, prepare for war. I know im crazy but aren't most vigilantes, lol. Im gonna go watch the rest of your videos now. I hope you can shed some light on my craziness. Thank you, sir. Ask me anything. i will give you an honest answer as long as your intentions are pure. Im sorry to burden you with this, but you are the only person I've found so far talking about this topic in this way. I understand if you dont respond. You have already graced me with a well of knowledge from this one video, so thank you.

      I hope you understand that I will never tell a person not to follow their morals. So thats how it is done When i went to University i joined all the campus martial art clubs so each semester i took 3 styles1 morn, 1 lunch time 1 evening , 3 arts every semenstee 3next sem 3 different arts , so 4 sems a yr == 12 arts a yr for 4 yrs= 48 arts , then after college started going to full reg martial arts schools been in the martial arts since age 10 now 66yrs old been an instructor at 4 different schools , hzve also had jobs as security guard ,also bar bouncer, and short time as bodyguard, Professor Lon A.S.A.X. When Funakoshi brought his variant of Okinawan Karate to Japan, he was very open about the fact that he wasn’t interested in teaching Karate as a practical fighting system. He was trying to develop and teach it as a physical development program. He saw it more as a way to teach bodily awareness, and promote longevity and especially as a physical improvement program especially for children. The Japanese already had a useful self defense system in jujitsu, and Kano (a friend of Funakoshi) had just successfully introduced Judo to the Japanese military and police. Funakoshi was promoting Karate to be something to be organized and taught to children and students as a class. He focused on the karate techniques that achieved this goal, deepened the stances, reorganizing the kata to focus on physical development and created a sparring system that was more like a game. He removed the techniques that were strictly self defense or war related. This is what caused the rift between himself and his school and the other Okinawan masters at the time. That he basically sold out to the Japanese. Thus Shotokan was born and became the first officially recognized Karate system to have Japanese government approval. Funakoshi packaged Karate in such a way that it could look very Japanese at the time as to avoid as much comparison to Chinese martial arts as possible. And it worked. Shotokan became the leading style of karate globally for Decades and still is. You’re probably wondering why I brought this short history up. Well to illustrate that most styles change over time for a variety of reasons. I think Kenpo was designed to change, certainly Ed Parker intended for it to. I think however that once he passed, there was a fracturing of the lineage based upon its inherent approach to be an ever evolving art. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but I do agree with you, I think that Kenpo lost its teeth. From my own experience with the style in the mid to late 90’s I noticed that there was an ever growing emphasis being placed on these long sequences of techniques against a very cooperative opponent that was very reminiscent of video game fighting. Then MMA exploded onto the scene and showed just how this type of combo striking just wouldn’t work coupled with the fact that there were a lot of Kenpo instructors who weren’t teaching that this type of training was just a drill and wasn’t going to be how it would play out in actual fights. I spent the better part of two decades in Shotokan Karate, it gave fantastic physical skills and timing. I was to carry that over to a successful amateur kickboxing foray with a record of 12-0-1. I will say that I didn’t really learn how to fight until shifting over to Okinawan Karate (Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu), where there was actual emphasis put on the application of techniques and the reality of using them instead of just memorizing long choreographed kata. Don’t get me wrong kata can be incredibly useful but I was well into my 14th year of Shotokan and 2nd degree black belt before I knew how to apply half of the techniques I knew from kata. I think a similar thing is happening in modern Kenpo. People are learning kata, drilling these rapid combo techniques but with out the practical knowledge of how a non compliant person is going to react, yes sparring helps, but in my experience at few different Kenpo schools once they get punched in the face all of those techniques go out the window and it just becomes kickboxing. Also in my experience many kenpo students have fast hands but don’t know how to generate any power. None of their strikes had weight or real connection behind it… except at one school in Colorado however the head instructor had both learned under Ed Parker and had also studied boxing and savate. Well I think I have rambled on enough. Great video…. Even if I am a few years late to the party.

    I think Mike's peak a boo style is the perfect demonstration of wing chun outside work and how shielding should be used in wc (wing chun guys constantly figth centerline against centerline when taking the outside allows ur own centerline to be aligned while ur opponent ones isn't) if ur plexus to plexus you gotta deal with powerful strikes from the left and right, if you get to ur opponent rigth side, you only have to deal with stuff ur left while he's got to deal with both sides and repositioning himself to face you. I dont want to strike down my opponent centerline, i want to control my opponent centerline with framing and trow strikes with my centerline aligned towards him so i can trow with max power and speed to finish it quickly. Mike did this perfectly with how he parried to the ouside and trew flurries down hos own centerline and I've learned so much when i realized this and started studying iron mike. (Controlling ur opponent centerline while facing it is alot harder than controlling it from the outside and most wc guys seem to have forgotten that fact)
