California & Oregon Coast Highlights, Trip Wrapup | Coast Run Pt. 10 | BMW GS Adventure Motorcycle
Hey gang! Here's the trip I did from Utah up to the Columbia River Gorge, Portland, and then on down the Oregon Coast all the way through California's Northern Pacific Coast Highway to Point Reyes Lighthouse & National Seashore, and then over the Golden Gate Bridge through San Francisco and back home to Utah across Nevada.
It was a trip so full of incredible scenery and opportunities that even though it took me ages to get this edit put together I'm so glad to have filmed and pieced together so many parts of it to help remember the joy that it was!
This trip was only about 2500 miles, so stay tuned for our next series where my friend Levi and I traveled over 4000 miles down mainland Mexico, across the Sea of Cortez, and back up the Baja Peninsula!
I hope you get some small amount of enjoyment out of watching it too. And I hope you get out there on your own long range overlanding motorcycle adventure!

    You could just ditch the wires from the switch side and start from the 4 wires. Tape off the ground, run a single wire from ignition to the first side of the switch, bundle up red and yellow together on the RR conector and connect dark green to FR.

    quick question, when doing this, aside from the air pump activating, how do you know when the lockers are engaged (like how the 80 series has the dash lights letting you know the lockers are on) how would you know the lockers are functioning

    I know this is an old video but my 2013 just got diagnosed with this same failure. I had the exact same symptoms you did, low battery all the time even after charging. I was also quoted the $4k to repair it. And no extended warranty for me... Bummer! You mentioned something in your video, that you pressure washed it. I also used a pressure washer to clean my bike a few times recently. I was told by my mechanic not to do this in general, so I won't anymore. But when I heard you mention that, it made me wonder. Could we have caused this failure by getting pressurized water into the wrong place and it shorted something out? He mentioned he's never seen this failure before and that it's super rare. I thought I was exceptionally unlucky, but now after watching your video, maybe it wasn't bad luck after all.

    • @CaptMaxADV
      @CaptMaxADV Před měsícem

      Dang! Sucks to hear that. I wouldn’t rule out that possibility, but I have routinely pressure washed this bike since and never had this problem again. And I intend to continue to do so! Good luck!

    I think you’re getting long mileage out of them because you ride so much pavement. Since you don’t venture off-road as much, you don’t really need the knobs for the majority of your riding. The people who say they get 3,000 miles out of theirs are those who need some knobs left on the tire for off-road riding and can’t afford to ride what is virtually a slick tire that you have at 6,000 miles. You running those tires down to virtual slick road tires is fine since you ride on pavement where the knobs aren’t necessary. The tires are still acceptable to you when the knobs are worn down whereas people who ride mostly off-road have to toss them once the knobs are shot at 3,000 miles. Yes, it’s possible to still run a tire off-road down to the wear bars but most will agree it really sucks and is no fun at all. I’m glad they are working out so well for your situation though. Thanks for the great vid.

    Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m not very knowledgeable about cars but I’m trying to get more into them. I recently inherited an 86 Toyota Pickup and I’ve been wanting to replace the suspension, and I’ve considered a 2in lift as well (but I don’t want to do a body lift). You mentioned this is a lift kit, but you didn’t use any coils and I don’t think you added any body spacers (at least I didn’t see any or see that process). So my question is, where does the added height come from? Thanks in advance for your time!

    • @CaptMaxADV
      @CaptMaxADV Před 2 měsíci

      No problem. And congrats! There are no coils on this type of vehicle. It uses regular old leaf springs in the back and what is called a Torsion Bar for the fronts. T-Bar. The rear height increase is from more arched springs, and there are other means to add to this if necessary, and this both overcomes probably 1-2 inches of sag in the rear on these old trucks, but also lifts it all the 2” above original factory height. So you’ll notice a pretty large difference. The front T Bars are replaced on this system with thicker diameter rods, which support heavier weight up front. Things like a winch, heavier bumper, off road lights, all the heavy stuff. And the height is set by dialing in the adjuster at the rear, where the T bar is attached to the chassis. It is possible to simply adjust the old factory T bars to a higher setting to attain some lift. And some folks do that. But the new replacement ones have a higher ride height on the spline indexing, and can be adjusted to support all that additional weight. The shocks up front on a T bar suspension have nothing to do with the suspending of the cars weight. Unlike more modern vehicles where the shock is surrounded by a coil spring and the unit handles all damping AND suspending of the weight. 🤓

    • @gguerra224
      @gguerra224 Před 2 měsíci

      @@CaptMaxADV thank you so much for your response! This makes a ton of sense and clears up my confusion. I’ve been learning a lot about suspension but didn’t know you could replace T Bars with thicker options and I didn’t know they were height adjustable. I seriously appreciate content creators like you who are willing to share your knowledge with newbies like myself. 🙌🏼

    Great stuff. Exactly what i want to do on my landcruiser. I know you need to switch on the rear just to activate the compressor but i was wondering would it not be better to have a seperate switch to activate the compressor only for the times you want to pump up stuff or if like me you have the onboard air tank ? Only because you rear locker will always be activated everytime you want to fill up the air tank or when using the pressure control for tire inflation. Just a thought but great work you done for sure

    • @CaptMaxADV
      @CaptMaxADV Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks! Yes, I think having another switch to run the compressor separate from the locker would be worth installing. I just didn’t want to go through the extra effort, and this way keeps it all pretty clean and simple. On the point of running the rear locker whenever the pump is on, I theorize that that is a good thing for it. For one thing is just to get some actuation out of the sliding components inside the diff, and also to just run air into the system/seals within the diff. By actuating the locker on every occasion that I need compressed air, it just exercises the whole system and I hope prolongs it’s life or prevents some sort of binding from lack of use. Couple more points: It might be years and years between ever needing to or actuating the lockers. Probably not good for them to sit for that long. Also, I once mistakenly ran down the highway in Baja for probably over 100 miles, a few intersection turns also, with my rear locker on! It wasn’t until I had my windows down and was pulling off the highway onto dirt road that I realized the she was locked up. So, while not good for tire wear and general component life/strain, an operable locker isn’t probably going to harm much! My thoughts. Do as you wish! 🙌🏻

    • @nasseral-momen1463
      @nasseral-momen1463 Před 4 měsíci

      @CaptMaxADV I reckon the best might be to have a 2 way circuit. So you can switch the compressor on separately but it also switches on when the diff is activated as you have done in this video. Seems like the best of both worlds and that way you won't forget to turn on the compressor for the difflocks

      I will second that! The music selection to choose from for CZcams videos is the biggest problem with trying to be a “creator”. Because it all SUCKS!! It’s only a question, when editing, of either wind noise, silence, or shitty music! 😆 Sorry and I hate it as much as you do! 🙏🏻

    Nice ride, how long do you think it may take to complete realistically?

      You could probably cover all the coastal miles I did in 2 days if you had to. Maybe 3.

    Great video! I went through northern California in December 2022, but didn't plan for the amount of time I really needed. I got a small hike in, but wasn't able to do Avenue of the Giants. The redwoods are so massive that it's hard to convey, even with pictures and video, how small they make you feel. I'm overdue to go back and spend some time there, but I appreciate a good moto video that helps refresh my memories of what I'm missing out there.

      That is so great to hear! The best part is that they’ll always be there waiting for your return! Pretty special indeed! 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

    Your compressor keeps running, suggesting a leak. Happened to me twice. Once was a diff breather tube stuck open. The other was an airline loose connection to the compressor. Both easy fixes. Your compressor should not continue to run once locked. FYI

      Thanks my friend. Other than setting up the gears, I installed this air system, and understand how it should and should work! LOL! It really doesn’t ever run once activated except for a minor top off every now and then. It definitely doesn’t run continually. Good lookin out! 🙌🏻
