I have always known there was a far darker side to this ending than most people understood. Look at the exact shot at 2:38. That isn't just a normal shot, that s the most telling shot of that entire scene. I ran pubs for 25 years, my father was an alchoholic and so was I. I know that face. Anyone who has lived or known alcoholics know that face, its a face of absolute desire and lust for alcohol, a look that is not on the face of someone who has any inclnation of giving up. Also he dances near and round that can; all that is going through his characters mind in the first part is 'how can i drink more of that in my improv?', literally it's his focus. Then he knows he's got his fuel to perform like a star and kicks it to oblivion. But for me the ending is actually darker than you say. He didn't just metaphorically leap, he literally leapt. He was on the same level as the rest of the people in the movie, he ran and leapt without standing on any barriers or railings first. That was just steps down to a walkway, then the water. It's Copenhagen Harbour, a place called 'Nordre Toldbod'. You can see it on Google maps. When I saw that movie originally, I knew that was us seeing him about to either die, or ended up in ICU in hospital. There was nothing more in his life after that shot, not worth living in my mind. He died at the end of that movie 100%

I was so touched by this film, it really pressed so many buttons that I couldn't help but feeling so emotional after watching it

It is like a memory you want to hold on to… you are right! My soul can still feel this film (not movie,) so strongly that I am not able to watch it a second time yet. We want to be hopeful for Adam at the end that through his subconscious journey and two parallel “relationships” he is able to experience intimacy and love. But is he alive at the end, or not? Has he also entered his personal dreamworld?

Great analysis of this film! I watched it for the second time and got even more out of it. The concept of transporting oneself back to a familiar place and connecting with loved ones is heartwarming. Being able to communicate things left unsaid and getting answers in return is a wonderful fantasy. It's obvious that these dreamlike sequences are not possible makes you wonder how much of the film is imagined. In any case, it's an amazing journey. My disappointment was in realizing that the connection between Harry and Adam was brief. Too brief. The acting was amazing by all the characters. Facial expressions revealed such a serious tone with glimpses of joy interspersed. My favorite scenes were when Adam asked his father to stop crying and then starts sobbing himself. Finally they have a good hug that feels long overdue. Another scene is when Adam's mother is singing along with the music and the lyrics are so personally directed at Adam, telling him how she wish she would have shown him more of her love. Both scenes convey such sweet gestures that every person longs to hear from their loved ones. It had to be a healing experience for Adam who had been suffering for so many years and grieving his childhood loss of his parents. Even though his fantasy was of his own making, the parents telling him he needs to let go and move on is an important message he is realizing for himself.

Loved your interpretation of this film. It is something special to the soul and heart. I love all 4 actors in the film. Twice seeing it is not enough.

The Holdovers was such a cinematic breath of fresh air. Easily one of the best of the year. Loved it to pieces!

MAJOR UPDATE: I just saw All of Us Strangers last night and it’s now tied for my number 1 of the year

Nailed it, its dark AF. Grown ups dont behave that way after the wife of their children give them another shot. The town has already identified him as a problem drinker and now hes publicly sculling drinks with kids. Falling over drunk. Hes literally diving headfirst into the same water as their friend jumped into. I honestly feel like some people could be lacking in life experience to find this really happy. Moderation is the message? Where? What about the student who was given vodka during their final? What does that foreshadow for the kids future the next time he struggles w confidence? Also Mads character when he asks his wife for another chance, withholds ordering alcohol in her presence based on his past behavior. How's she going to react when the town is talking about him getting wasted again, w kids this time and jumping into the sea? You dont even have to imagine 10 years down the line to see this going poorly.

Hey, I totally feel the same. C'mon C'mon has had a huge impact on my life as well, it's really a treat of cinema, human emotion. I've also watched the movie twice and I can't stop myself from revisiting it every six months ig, it feels like a therapy session.

I came for an explanation of the very last frames, I agree that it is supposed to symbolize him going overboard. He would surley regret that when he sobers up. Loved this movie too. You made some great points I didnt consider.

Joaquin is my favourite actor so I watched it on a flight to Dubai. Despite the sound being broken. I watched it on the way back, despite the sound still being broken. It’s beautiful in every way.

This was so moving to watch, it reminded me about how powerful films can be and why I love them. Mike Mills is such a careful and attentive filmmaker, C'mon C'mon is definitely a favourite.

Agree Agree Agree! I had the exact same experience with this movie and find myself drawn back to it on days when I need to feel okay. It never fails to put me in touch with the connection we all have with each and often forget on our worst days. And as someone who tried to be a filmmaker in his 20s, I find inspiration in Mill's work both creatively and in my personal life. Life is art.

Return of the King!

C'mon c'mon manages to perfectly capture the love both we feel for children and what it feels like to be loved by a child. A film such as Children of Men calls attention to a world torn apart from the loss of its children, and I think that this film perfectly synthesizes what exactly it is that is lost. Truly brilliant - all of us at the Newport Beach Film Festival loved this film when we left the theater
